"Frakes Warps Into Thunderbirds
Jonathan Frakes told SCI FI Wire that he didn't know anything about Thunderbirds before signing on to direct a big-screen live-action version of Gerry Anderson's cult SF marionette TV series. "I know a lot about it now," Frakes said in an interview. "It's about a family international rescue team that functions under the radar of the public."
Frakes added, "This family, the Tracy family, is called in to save falling bridges and burning buildings that firemen can't save. It's one of those situations where someone calls a hotline, and this family comes to the rescue. There's also a wonderful international spy named Lady Penelope, who drives a six-wheel pink Rolls Royce. The original show was done with marionettes, and it was pretty wacko."
Frakes—who previously directed the Star Trek movies First Contact and Insurrection, as well as Clockstoppers—will jet this weekend to England in order to hire a crew and audition actors. "What I understand from being over in England already is that Thunderbirds is as popular with the English as Star Trek is with Americans," he said. "It's a huge favorite there, with the toys and the Tracy family action figures. All of those things are still huge sellers at Christmas every year. As I understand it, England, Australia and Japan have a passionate audience. Anyway, our version of Thunderbirds will be entirely live-action, with a Spy Kids meets James Bond kind of vibe." Production will begin in February 2003, with filming slated to take place in South Africa and London. Universal will release Thunderbirds in 2004. Universal Pictures is owned by Vivendi Universal"

I remeber this being mooted sooo long ago; so long that Robert Redford was rumoured to be up for the part of Virgil Tracey.
Spy Kids meets James Bond? Which genius pitched this one?
I think we'll have Vinnie Jones as Parker and Steve Buscemi as Brains, Kristin Scott Thomas as Lady Penelope, Eddie Izzard as Scott, Jim Carrey as John, and Robbie Coltrane as Masterspy.
Next up, after his appearance as old man Tracey; Four Feather Falls with Robert De Niro...

So many films, so little time...

The only thing this effort is going to have in common with the TV show is the name.
I see a massive flop heaving itself ponderously into view.
Stop, Mr. Frakes. Stop now.

I have a bad feeling about this :( :(
Taken from the Thunderbirds Web site:
Quote: The film sees the Tracy's secret base and home in the Pacific Ocean - Tracy Island - invaded by master criminal The Hood whose intention is to take over the Thunderbirds craft and employ them for his own evil means. Having seen off Jeff and his four eldest sons on a fake mission, The Hood faces an unexpected obstruction on the island, Jeff's youngest son Alan and his friends Fermat and Tintin who, determined to succeed in their first rescue misson, fearlessly step in to save The Tracy family and the entire organisation.
No 1: The Hood discovers the Tracy Island :oh-hum:
No 2: Who the HELL is Fermat ????
Cue: Teenagers saving the day one again, while the adults look complete morons.
Finally there is a photo (rather small) of Lady Penelope's Rolls Royce (taken from the BBC web site).

Looks very bad. Not at all the class the car on TV had.
I know they have to change some things to make a movie, but enough is enough.

Didn’t realise it was already in production. Car looks cool but it aint a Roller and as such isn’t really Lady P’s motor.

Now normally I don't like criticising a film before it's even er - filmed. In too many cases of these "Film version of a series cartoon or otherwise" we have the fans of the original who set out to hate the film regardless. (OK in most cases the film does turn out to be dire - think Popeye, Flintstones, Avengers but that's beside the point)
In this case though - that script idea posted above sounds the biggest pile of http://members.lycos.co.uk/sheepdip41/steamingturd.gif I've heard of for a movie script!
Whoever dreamt that one up should be sacked.

I have the book "The Greatest Sci-fi Movies Never Made" by David Hughes (if you don't have it get it now - it's a fascinating read dealing with all those 'almost' sci-fi films such as I am Legend and The Tourist).
There's a chapter in there about the developement of the Thunderbirds movie. It's been a while since I read it, but if I recall the director of The Borrowers (Peter Hewitt I think) had been developing it for years until one of his movies tanked and the producers lost faith in him, or something. His ideas sounded so much more Thunderbird-esque (it talks about his ideas for set designs and it sounded like a cross between the original TV series and Jules Verne - he was bringing that same visual design style that he used on The Borrowers) and had a real, distinct British quirky edge to it. After reading Frakes's comments above its a crying shame they've gone in this direction - Thunderbirds had the real chance of being something visually different.
Then again, I guess it's not fair to judge a movie before its filmed? I'll keep my fingers crossed - even if it isn't the Thunderbirds we all remember it could at least prove to be a fun ride.
Oh, and I DO like that car above - paint it black and it could be the new Batmobile.

The more I look at that pic, the more it looks like a fake. The edges of the body around the wheels doesn't look quite right, and the door that's being held open.... :suspect:

According to the Fanderson site Gerry Anderson is now 'becoming more and more involved with the picture' and is acting as Frakes' unoffcial advisor. Frakes and Anderson are described as being firm friends!
Anderson is also 'in discussion' with Universal as to 'what my role in the movie will be'. A cameo, perhaps...?
There's also another photo of the car. Didn't like it at first (it's not a Roller) but it's beginning to grow on me...
The script still sounds crap though.

But Rolls Royce wouldn't let the producers use their car in the film. This aberration, at least, isn't Frakes' fault.

Read recently in SFX magazine that the character of Alan is going to be 12 FFS !!1111 :oh-hum: :oh-hum: :gag: :gag: (In the TV show he is 21 apparently - admitidly a rather "virginal" 21 ;) )
With him saving the Tracey island from the hood - this story line is turning out to be "Thunderbirds - Home Alone" or "Thunderbirds - Spy Kids"
All these bits of information do not bode well for this film.

I think Parker looks OK, but looking at what Lady P is wearing are the filmmakers going for a futuristic/60s feel to it. That outfit is just stupid!! What happened to the clean cut suits that Lady P is meant to wear.
And FAB1 is even more ridiculous. It doesn't even look like a car...more like a bright pink slug!!

Rolls Royce apparently refused permission so they had little choice. I like it. Can’t say the same for the gay looking Tracy family though.

What do you expect, an American cast them for their looks and not acting skill, no doubt.
From the pics, I get the impression Parker will also be camp. Sacrelidge! Why not cast someone with a big nose and miserable looking face? That's what he's meant to look like.
I get the feeling this is Avengers all over again.

Thunderbirds could have been a GREAT live-action movie. The set-up is there, the characters are there, even the score is there.
The producers were handed it on a plate.
And they seem to be doing their damnedest to screw it up.

Answers:

From the brief look offered by that clip, I think the updated ships look OK, apart from Thunderbird 2 which looks a bit like a flattened Star Trek shuttle.
Didn't realise Ben Kingley was in it, I don' think I'll write this off just yet, even though Bill Paxton plays Jeff Tracy.

I was over at Pinewood Studios yesterday afternoon to see The Weekest Link being filmed and the security(?!) allowed us to walk around the site unescorted. Whilst we following the directions they gave us we saw The Mole on the back of a flat-bed.
To say it was huge (ohh err:lol: ) would be an understatement. If nothing else it shows that a lot of effort is being put in to this production. I wish I'd had my digital camera with me as the Mole looked superb:thumbs: it's a great update of a design classic, I can't wait to see what the other Thunderbird designs look like.
It was also interesting to see all the various "Thunderbirds" departments dotted around the 007 soundstage in the numerous sheds.
From what I saw yesterday I now have high hopes for the movie.
