Question:
Ive had this film sat on top of my telly waiting to be watched for a while now, i only bought it because it was an oscar winner and ive bought most of the major winners on DVD. but everytime i go to stick it on, i end up watching something else, as i dont fancy it to much.
is it a good film? is it exciting? as i cant be arsed wasting precious film watching time a crap film. and i seem to have a sneaky suspicion it isnt as good as people say?
Hard to say as i've not seen it myself but my 12 year old sister was dragged along to an OAP screening when it was in the cinemas and said it was great.
This coming from someone who thinks Sabrina the Teenage Witch is the epitome of entertainment. So that surprised me and i think it'll prolly be worth a watch.
I know how you mean about being in the right mood though. I've got North by Northwest still holding out as the only DVD i've not watched yet.... just waiting for the right time.
This is the WORST film I've seen in well over a year.... NO BULL.

I quite liked it and pleasantly surprised as I thought it might be dull. The first half hour proved my suspicions right but it gets rather interesting when they leave Princeton. Worth a watch and the extras are quite good.
Worst film for me goes to Men In Black II.
agreed. No way Best Picture, but well worth a look IMO. I like Russell Crowe anyway!
(and it's got Jennifer Connolly in - what more do you want?!)
A thread was started a while back sighting this is a contender for the worst 'best picture' oscar winner ever and I would tend to agree. It is typical saccharin hollywood pap not even fully truthful to real life events.

#Because normally the 'real life films' are?
I think its an excellent film - one of the best of the year. I've studied psychology and from that point of view they got John Nash's symptomology spot on. Theres an excellent peice of filming at the start when they newcomers start at university. Watch out for the bit with the tie...

Yes.
Did I deserve the Best Picture Oscar?
Probably not. It's good, but not that good.
and it beat LOTR :nono:  :nono:

It's rubbish - if I were you I'd trade it with me immediately... you're lucky I'm willing to take it off your hands to be honest... how about Mel Gibson's "The Patriot" in exchange - top film which I am sure you will enjoy!!!:D
Worth watching to appreciate James Horners score..yeah good film though not Oscar worthy.
Utterly mediocre and predictably sentimental biopic. It's rubbish, but seems designed to be showered with awards by the middlebrow members of the Academy. The only good thing about it is Jennifer Connely.
So this film's a bit like Marmite then? :p
Christ why did you shell out for it if u cant be bothered to watch the film??.i love any format of film(VHS,DVD,CINEMA) and have a few DVD's of my fav films and enjoy visitng these forums, but i dont understand these people who just buy dvd's for the sake of it,buy everyone avaliable and never watch half of them, what a watse of money!
P.S Loved the movie, think it has been given to much slack,Crow great one of my fav's(thats why i own it),however maybe i understand it more as i have had people in the family that have suffered mental illness problems(like the psych...graduate up b4 said)

Cookiemonster - how did you know I was a graduate? . Are you the one in the bushes now, with the laptop, torch and weak lemon drink?
I really did like this film. Only watched through recommendation, but throughly enjoyed it and can see myself watching it again very shortly.
The best part is how you seem to go through what John Nash is going through with him. Very well directed but as said by others, I would have given all the Oscars to LOTR.
It's a really good film. Just because the Academy may have overrated it doesn't mean we should underrate it. I wouldn't concern yourselves with the Oscars, since those things are clearly always rigged anyway. Every year a Miramax film that's not well liked by audiences or critics gets nominated for Best picture simply because boss Harvey Weinstein keeps tossing freebies to the voters. That tells you everything about the credibility of the Academy. :p
might be interesting to watch it without having heard anyone else's opinion, after all you may spend as long as the film is just reading everyones views :-)

I bought it randomly one night for fiver (I was going to rent a vid, but it cost me a pound more for this on dvd ) and it was well worth it.

Have you never seen a film on recomendation? thats why i bought it. i thought it was a cool film in the end, not what i was expecting, but still not worth best picture as it didnt blow me away.
VHS is dead mate. i only have VHS of stuff that isnt available on DVD, when its released ill replace it.
this film looks so ***** it's unreal
Amazing... I'd heard no individual reviews or opinions on this film, and to be honest, I didn't really know what it was about. I have just watched it and am surprised to hear such mixed reports.
I thought it was an outstanding film - okay, perhaps the true life story is even more outstanding.. but I have been captivated for the last two hours, and I think it's one of the best films I have ever seen. I hesitate to break that down into what it was that I thought the film excelled in, or areas of merit, as that may unstick my impression. When Hollywood can churn out claptrap like Me, Myself & Irene, it is hugely reassuring to know that gievn the right circumstances, they can produce something that accurately portrays mental illness, in a sensitive and compelling way.
Just a film, but captivating.
I thought it was a pretty average film of an unusual subject.
Crowe was outstanding ,Connelly, Plummer and Harris were also
good (though P and H played to type),a few:lol: moments -(esp early on)
Enjoyed, Oscar material? you decide.
