Question:
I've just been asked to help compile a list of British films and TV series either set in schools or about the educational process in general.
Off the top of my head, I've come up with the following:
<U>Film</U>
Tom Brown's Schooldays
The Happiest Days of Your Life
The Belles of St Trinians (and sequels)
To Sir With Love
Kes
Goodbye Mr Chips
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
<U>TV</U>
Please Sir
Just William
Grange Hill
Hope and Glory
Hearts and Minds
Teachers
...but there are obviously hundreds if not thousands more out there, so do you have any more suggestions?
Literally anything about education is welcome - the only stipulation is that it must be British.
If....
TV: To Serve Them all My Days & Whacko! (and Billy Bunter maybe?).
There used to be a programme on Children's ITV called Palace Hill, about young royals going to school.
There was also some sitcom starring Neil from The Young Ones set in a private school. Can't remember for the life of me what it was called.
Some more films:
Gregory's Girl
Gregory's Two Girls
Carry On Teacher
Clockwise
Get Real
...and TV:
Chalk
Press Gang
Seem to recall a very old comedy series with foreign adult students - I think it was called Mind Your Language. Probably not what you're after but it was all I could think of that you didn't already have.
TV
The History Man
Mind Your Language.
Film - Carry On Teacher
TV - Chalkface
Not nexcessarily the most common, but...
Film - Unman, Wittering and Zigo...
TV - A Very Peculiar Practice
Film:
<b>
Clockwork Mice
Unman, Wittering And Zigo
Monty Python's Meaning Of Life </b>(parts)
<b>Hope And Glory</b>(parts)
<b>Please Sir
Good Morning Boys
Fever Pitch
Term Of Trial
Quartermaine's Terms
It's Great To Be Young !
Fear In The Night
Nicholas Nickleby
A Little Princess
The Class Of Miss McMichael</b>
TV:
<b>
Our Day Out
Wizzkids
GBH</b>
A sizeable portion of <b>The Singing Detective</b>
The Nigel Planer sitcom from 1993 <b>Bonjour La Classe</b>
<b>Headmaster</b> - Frank Windsor vehicle from 1976ish
<b>Dr Who - Mawdryn Undead
Inspector Morse - Last Seen Wearing
Goodbye Mr Chips</b>
There was also some sitcom starring Neil from The Young Ones set in a private school. Can't remember for the life of me what it was called.Hardwicke House? The one which only got 2 screenings before it was taken off as being too risque for an evening slot!
No, I see from above this wasn't Hardwicke House, but in any case it's another one -- I think Roy Kinnear was in it, ITV from c. 1988.
Did Terence Davies' first two features show the classroom? they certainly featured a schoolboy..
How about Michael Winterbottom's 'Jude'? Sue Bridehead attends a teacher training college and marries a schoolteacher, Jude is excluded from university. It's certainly 'about' education in some way..
Might be stretching the point a bit but what about The Worst Witch?, childrens TV programme set in a school for witches.
One of the Ripping Yarns TV shows (Tomkinson's Schooldays) featured a private school with Michael Palin as Tomkinson and Ian Ogilvy as the school bully.
That'll Be The Day starts out in a school *my local one actually).
Would you count Harry Potter as an English film?
Mandy - Starred Jack Hawkins and was about a young deaf girl - I think there were quite a lot of school scenes on her speech therapy.
School for scoundrels - Alastair Sim movie -although it's not a conventional "school"! But then Alistair Sim was also a major part of the St Trinians films and that wasn't exactly a conventional school either.
The Great St. Trinian's Train Robbery
The Belles of St. Trinian's
Blue Murder At St.Trinian's
And what about Boys will be Boys and Good Morning Boys starring Will Hay?
...<a href="http://65.201.198.41/movies/capsules/00424_ANOTHER_COUNTRY.html">Another Country</a> (1984) ... . . .
...<a href="http://www.filmsite.org/good.html">Goodbye Mr. Chips</a> (1939) ... . . .
...and again <a href="http://www.cinescene.com/reviews/videodave.html#goodbye">Goodbye Mr. Chips</a> (1969) ... . . . .
...and what about the teddibly, teddibly bditish The Winslow Boy (1948, remade 1999)...?...
. . . :smokin: . . .
Educating Rita (ok not school)
Kes
Leaving (TV)
Wait til 4 o'clock (TV - Granada)
<I>Educating Rita</I> is absolutely fine - in fact, it's a really obvious one that I'm kicking myself for leaving out!
Thanks for all of these - they've saved me and my colleague a huge amount of time. :D
What about Chariots of Fire?
If including University ( Educating Rita ) how about TV's Porterhouse Blue?
Bottoms Up (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0053668)--An old favourite of mine.
I saw a shockingly bad sequel to 'To sir with Love' on cable recently that was imaginingly titled 'To sir with love 2'
Other films....
Pink Floyds The Wall
Harry Potter
A feast at Midnight
The girl with brains in her feet
Wilt
Clockwise
Monty Python's meaning of life
On telly
There's a fly on the wall documentry running on Channel 5 Sunday luchtimes called 'School' (i think)
Demon Headmaster
Chalk (a sitcom from a couple of years ago)
Billy Bunter
I was about to suggest Just William when I noticed that you included it in your original post ... but I thought I would add that there are least two versions a 1994 BBC one and a later 1996 version I think there was a much older black and white tv version but I'm not sure!
In Films - how about The Blackboard Jungle and The Browning Version.
There's an even earlier version of Just William made in the late 70's or early 80's.

Further research using: http://www.tvchroniccles.com/childrenstv/kidstvw2.htm
shows that the earlier one was called "William" and was screened from 1962-63. Dennis Waterman played William.
Can I also suggest you look through the childrens tv programmes on the above web site as there are quite a few that include schools as part of their plot.
Another two tv series you should include are:
"Jennings" and "Jennings goes to school".
Further research is needed I think because the one I was thinking about had Bonnie Langford playing the part of Violet Elizabeth Bott. I can't think who played William but it definately wasn't from the 60's or the 90's.
