Question:
It also comes in a rather naff Italian Job style cardboard case. :(
The Region 3 version which also comes in a cardboard style box (but quite smart) , is not RCE encoded and plays fine.
Very good DTS track as well.
Another disc which is distributed by Columbia worldwide is RCE encoded.
That's the pattern.
Only titles that Columbia have the wordwide rights to are RCE coded.

As theres no extras on the disk its not too much of a prob though.
Not a problem, Tosh have a workaround. I think the Amaray case is inside the cardboard box :)
I thought Resident Evil was RCE but on my Samsung DVD-511 player it works no probs with the remote control hack. Is it a one off or is my player imune to RCE discs?

Yep, your Samsung is immune to RCE discs.
Here is a link for info about RCE and it includes a list of RCE immune players:

Nice   :smokin: :) :rocker: :D etc.....
The point is that Columbia, along with most other studios point to standard region coding being necessary to protect the distribution of films which are licensed to different companies in different regional territories.
However, when it comes to protecting their films they only RCE encode films that are distributed by themselves world wide, thus proving that when it comes down to it they don't give a damn about films such as Resident Evil with was licensed by Pathe in this country and released at the cinema a whole week before the US DVD release. All Columbia care about is their own profits. The continued use of the RCE system (with titles such as The New Guy) shows that RCE is still being used - and will still be used. All this talk of RCE being dropped because of compatibility problems with US machines is just that - talk.
I have strong doubts that the whole Region Coding business is actually legal - and should it come down to it I hope that Columbia's RCE malarkey can be used against the studios to show that overseas licensing is not the reason for region encoding, and ultimately could be used as an argument to remove region coding all together.
Resident Evil was not a RCE title.
Resident Evil was not a RCE title.
Er, yes. That's what I said. They don't RCE encode titles that are licenced to other companies worldwide.

I was pointing out that according to their own statements Resident Evil is a film that they should be been RCE encoding - more so than their own titles.
So far (and fingers crossed it continues) all Columbia Region 1 titles that have RCE encoding, have been released on Region 3 without RCE.
Basically Columbia know that there is a sizable number of non-r1 dvd players modified to be multi-region. They are too afraid to release RCE discs in non-R1 territories.
