Question:
Having just watched The Royal Tenenbaums (still not made my mind up about this film) and Rushmore being one of my favourite films I was wondering whether anymore had been heard about a possible Criterion release for Bottle Rocket (which I've not seen)?
Don't know about a Criterion release. I saw this recently and although good, it is not a patch on either Rushmore or Royal Tenebaums IMO:)
There have been rumours of a Criterion Bottle Rocket for ages, but nothing official has been announced... as far as I know. The film itself is a gem - nothing too far removed from Wes Anderson's later work (whimsy, outlandish schemes, gorgeous '60s beat pop soundtrack). Maybe it's less confident than either Rushmore or The Royal Tenenbaums, but it's great for all the same reasons.
There's a bare bones two-sided R1 disc available (pan and scan one side, anamorphic w/s on the other) with a fine picture and a solid 5.1 sound mix - shop around, 'cos you might be waiting for ever for a Criterion.
but then again it might b in a weeks time, you never can tell with criterion. they always deny averything even a day before any official announcement, constant replies from them saying they have 'no plans for a release' get annoying when they annouce the title a week later.

Agreed, I think the main thing that seperates Bottle Rocket from Wes' later work is the improvised feel to a lot of the scenes. I thought the 1st hr of the film drags a little because of scenes that were overlong, seemingly because the actors were improvising, although this might have been deliberate on te directors part. It's aonly a minor quiblble though, & i urge all fans of Tenenbaums & Rushmore to watch this film! :rocker:
"I blew it man, I blew it!" :D :notworthy
tis a great little film. Like "Office Space", I know that as soon as I order the bare-bones disc the super-duper version will be announced!
