Question:
Saw this at a free preview on Tuesday night and was amazed at how violent it was. I would have thought it should have been a 15 and not a 12 but now that a 12 has become a 12A it means really stupid people can take their 5 year old to see it.
The BBFC have really cocked it up big time with this rating.
Almost makes you wonder whether it's deliberate so that the BBFC can be got rid off and replaced by some ultra stict body headed up by Jack Straw as chief censor.
It's the sounds of the fights as much as what happens in them. Every punch and kick sounds like it's cracking a skull open.
What do other people think ?
there is an article in Daily Mail today about Damon attacking the british censor system. His mother, a child psychologist was also outraged.
he basically said what you said.
I saw this too and I agree 100%!
In addition to the very violent (but very well done) combat there are a couple of moments that really made me jump - and I don't jump very often when I watch films.
How this and Spiderman have the same rating, I don't know.
That said, I really enjoyed the film.
it`s just another good book to bad film conversion, sad really won`t be on my want`s list.:oh-hum: :oh-hum: :oh-hum:
Hmmmm....... would have to agree on this one - saw it last night - Cheers Stella Artois!
IMO this was a great action thriller - very tightly directed - had me engrossed the whole film!
Was quite violent though and definitley think it should be more than a 12A.
Good point about Spiderman - really brought it home.

Was that at the Birmingham screening ? I was there with my wife, we were sat down the front. Just infront of the 3 or 4 bimbos who got up and left the film about 1/3 of the way through. It wasn't that difficult to follow

True - but then really stupid people could, if they so wished, let their 5 year old watch an uncut version of Cannibal Holocaust on video as well. Moral of story - there's not a lot that can be done about really stupid people doing really stupid things, 12A or no 12A. ;)

Why would anyone want to appoint the Foreign Secretary as chief censor?
And in the States.. a 5 year can technically go and see anything with parent, thats rated R.
What would like to watch tonight Johnny ?
Eyes Wide Shut or Goodfellas ?

Nah, I reckon someone oughta bust his ass back down to just plain "Home" Secretary and then force him to watch some depraved filth (for the common man's benifit, obviously). That should teach him.
:p

"The Management does not accept responsibility for the stupidity of its customers" is a mantra I always live by....
I've yet to see the film so can't comment on whether I think it should be a 12A or not, BUT in the US the film is PG-13 so why is Matt Damon slamming out censor for what is essentially the exact same rating as PG-13
Every studio it seems is now ensuring that films that once would have been adult enough to be rated R / 15 (upwards) for proper grown-ups with enough intelligence to follow the plot are now targeted at every demographic so that everyone is supposidly satisfied.
I am annoyed by the 12A rating because it means even more irritating brats ruining my cinematic experience time and again. It also doesn't help that the average IQ these days doesn't seem to rise above 12
Yet the 12A is not applicable to video! That mean's when SPIDER-MAN comes out to buy, little kids can't legally see it! The BBFC's excuse?
"A 12A rating for video wouldn't change anything."
Of course it would! Younger kids could buy the video if they were with a parent!

Of course it would! Younger kids could buy the video if they were with a parent! ?Says who? Kids can't buy cinema tickets for 12A, with parent of not. The parent has to buy the tickets for them. Which is exactly what happens on video, 12A or 12.
Is it R rated in the States?
Spiderman should have been cut for a 12 IMO.

Spiderman should have been cut for a 12 IMO. PG-13, theres no way they would have released it with an R in America, they would have cut it to get pg-13 anyway.

Went to see it in Belfast - quite a small University owned cinema - didn't expect to get my fillings rattled with such a loud sound system.
Loved the fact the film was set in Europe - scenery/architecture was much better than your usual US based actioners.
