Question:
I remember seeing in Empire many years ago that Chris columbus had made "Fantastic Four" the movie, there were screen shots and info on its production. I read in a few issues later that it had been shelved for whatever reason.
Anyone know if this is to be released or even if it exists or am I going mad.
Thanks for looking
Apparantly, this is discussed in the"Stan Lee, Mutants And Monsters" Disc which is being released with the Spiderman R1 and R4 DVD's (it's also available on R2 now, i believe) :)
Was this the one that Roger Corman produced? I seem to recall reading about it too, but not in Empire...can't remember where.
There was a very low budget FF film made in 1994 but was shelved straight away due to an interest in doing a big budget version.
It does exist in bootleg form, I've (ahem) got a VCD copy of it. It's okay, pretty faithful to the comics but lacking in acting, and Johnny storm doesn't "Flame on" until the end.

The Fantastic Four movie has a long and complicated history!! This is all from memory, but I am certain of the basic facts...
The reason for the existence of the low budget film (made by Roger Corman's company) was purely for the big studio to hold onto the film rights to the property.
Under the terms of the original contract the studio (can't remember who it was) had to have started rolling cameras by a certain date or the rights reverted to Marvel. Approaching this date the studio were no where near ready so they sub-contracted the film to Roger Corman's company who had a reputation for getting films up and running quickly.
(Side note - Roger Corman's auto(?)biography "How I Made A Hundred Movies In Hollywood And Never Lost A Dime" is absolutely brilliant reading!! Although it doesn't cover the FF film...)
So Corman got the cameras rolling on the required date and the studio held onto the rights. Part of the contract must have stipulated that the film be completed as it was, special effects, music, sound effects, everything and then quickly purchased by the studio and locked in the vaults.
Obviously that vault wasn't very secure as lots of copies have leaked out, I've got an NTSC VHS copy and they regularly appear on eBay.
Cheers,
Ryan
Fox now have the right to the FF and Chris Columbus was attached to direct. They even had a script which was said to nail the Fantastic Four absolutley perfect. The only problem....The budget came in at over $200 million! So has re writes went ahead to get the budget down. Colombus left and Raja'Never been kissed' Costnell became attached. Fortunatly he soon left the project to do 'Scooby Doo' .
Now that a certain Spider fella has made big bucks this year Fox are 'Hot' on the FF again and Peyton 'Bring it On' Reed is in the directors chair.
There still waiting for a filmable script though.
To prove that there's work going on in the film here (http://www.productionillustration.com/fantastic%20four.html) is some pre-production art.
yeah, the 1994 version is 'alright' though Dr Doom came across as *very* camp.
and the stretch 'special effects' were
I heard that the Corman FF movie was released theatrically in Italy because they needed to show it in cinemas somewhere to hold onto the rights. Anyone know if this is true?
If it was allowed I'd ask where I could get a VCD of this...
I think I would also ask aout the vcd too.
If it was allowed.
But it isnt, so I won't.
;)
do they have comic mart/conventions in your area?
There's a couple of Fantastic Four VCDs on ebay at the moment. No bids, only a few days left and £4.00 a shot. Debating if i should get one myself!
Maybe I could suggest that the corman version in bad quality can be found on Edonkey. But I would just be joking, cos it`d be illegal, right?
Chris
I'm normally rabidly anti-piracy but when something just isn't available anywhere else I'm not sure where I stand - but the only pirate vid I ever bought was Reservoir Dogs when it was "banned"
To be honest its a pretty rubbish film, so just get if from wherever and delete it afterwards
Chris
Thanks for the info guys, found the film on imesh last night and will watch it tommorrow
