Blade 2 (R1)
Question:

Whoa!! This is a superb set! Has everything I look for in a decent DVD. Obviously the film is cool to begin with (IMHO) but here it's presented really nicely. I like the way the menus kick in straight away and are quite stylish too. The transfer is really sharp and clean and there's two sets of commentaries (haven't heard them yet though).
The amount of extras on disc 2 is superb. An 83 minute documentary with branching scenes (that you can view seperately), deleted scenes with a cool onscreen introduction from the director and loads of other featurettes about the special FX and digital stuntmen etc. Really impressed with the presentation of all these little bits too with picture-in-picture views and onscreen text. There's loads more stuff as well - gonna take a while to wade through!
Best DVD of the year by a mile so far. If you enjoyed the film you have to get this set!!

Really looking forward to this. If only CD-Wow had been more Wow and less Where/When/What, or i'd be watching it by now, instead of waiting until next week. End of rant. Want now. Must buy Jap Blade DTS....

Got mine yesterday but not had a chance to watch it.
Good film, I still find the UV grenades laughable though......as if the light would spread out down the tunnels like fire, hehe.

Gotta agree there, great film, transfer/audio and some cool features. That doc where you see them put together all the prosthetics for the producers/director was great.

Yeh!!! Just watched that tonight, thought it was gonna be about 5 mins long but just kept going and going till about the 50 min mark. Absolutely fascinating!! Have seen all the visual effect documentaries now...still got the main 83 minute Making Of to come too as well as loads more!!!

I watched the film tonight after getting back from Signs and this was much better. It does exactly what it says on the tin. A loud rockin action film with a good comic book story. I hope Blade 3 with it proposed "humans are now in the minority" gets made.

Though i read that Del Toro wasn't entirely happy with the final product, as readers of AICN may know, he's friends with Harry Knowles, and he basically said that he cringes whenever he sees the CGI stuntmen, because the studio set the budget and wouldn't allow anymore to cover the extra cost of CGI - oh and im sure it's cut as well, there was an early review by Knowles which began with "This is the unrated version, not the version you'll see in theatres" or something to that effect. Could there be an unrated version, or is this one it? Im not sure.

Did anyone else think that the vampires clad head to toe in black looked and acted like the black ninja soldiers from Half Life?

Whilst I have no idea about the so called 'unrated' version on Del Toros commentary he does state the bits where he hates the CGI.
Or in his own words 'That's ******* awful looking!'

Got my copy yesterday and thought it was great, had the sound so loud I thought my ears were going to bleed.....
Have to agree that the cgi in certain places is a bit flaky to say the least, my only description is that the characters seem to go a bit rubbery when jumping around!!

Mr. Nail meet Mr. Head.
The humans-as-minority premise, however, would work. Really, really work. And ditch most of Blade II's poo-ness.
Except the wrestling moves. They kicked ass :D

Watched this one yesterday :D, fantastic doc, bit samey here and there but del Toro came off very well. Seems a very amusing chap who despite what he thinks i think he is very elequent.
The bit where he's describing Blade as a character and how you're unlikely to see him at the end of the film "embracing all forms of Human life" made me chuckle.
Just the Comm's to go now.
Fantastic disc.

Blade 2 (two disc set) came Tuesday (only waiting three days from CDWOW), I had a quick look last night at the DVD. The DVD is fully loaded with extras. Probably about 2.5 hours of material, excluding the two commentaries.
It's actually got three soundtracks, English DD EX 6.1, English DTS EX 6.1 and French DD 2.0. What's the point in sticking on a French track if it's only 2.0? A waste of space. Picture is in 1.85:1 and quality is perfect (states on the back it's in 2.35:1 which is wrong).
The main extra is an 84 minute documentary, which has featurettes branching from it. You'll see a little logo and just press the play button which starts it. When the featurette is finished it returns back to where the documentary was playing. I skipped forward to find out if Donnie Yen was interviewed and he is, so I'm really looking forward to see this.
I watched first one of these featurettes, Blade 2 has a more comic book feeling to it, according to the director del Toro. For example, he wanted the sound effects similar to what is presented in a comic book. If a door in a comic book says "creek", he wanted the door in the film to creek etc.
There's about 24 minutes worth of deleted/extended scenes. And numerous featurettes on visual effects.
There's an abundance of text information as well. There's scene breakdown, the script and how's the scenes were shot etc. There's also the Director's Notebook, probably take ages go through this. Seems to be a detailed account of how the director shot the film.
This is probably one of the best DVDs I've bought in a while for extras. Next will probably be Black Hawk Down, From Hell, followed by Spider-Man for a load of extras. Id' say Minority Report will also have two discs.
I really enjoyed Blade 2 8/10, making this a very worthy purchase, great value at 26 Euro. Can't wait for Blade 3.

Del Toro certainly seems like a grounded guy and I like his honesty on the features of the second disc (the commentary on the abandoned 'wig' scene is a real chuckle!). Haven't listened to the main comm, but I'm really looking forward to it...
As for the film, I have to admit that (as mentioned above) the CGI and basic premise/story let it down a little. I still thoroughly enjoyed it though as the directing and staging is superb. I can't remember the last time I admired the lighting in a film so much! (if ever). The colours and tinting used in the film really do enhance the viewing experience IMO and some sequences are borderline 'Art'!.
If I had any criticism towards the direction, it would be that the tone of Blade 2 is slightly too dreary for my liking (especially when compared to the original) and the mildly confusing plot U-turns in the middle don't help matters. Overall though, a very commendable piece of work and a fantastic DVD.

You are entitled to your own opinion, granted. But your comment is an extreme exaggeration.

Just watched the film and, although by no means dreadful, it is pretty average IMO.
The fight scenes were very dull (witness the scene where Blade takes on 30 or so goonies) and the first third in the sewers was way to close to Aliens (as were the Reapers) for my liking.
The twist in the final third was good though but overall - not a DVD I will be keeping once I have finished the extras.

Because in Canada there are French speakers and English speakers. In some parts of Canada, there are many English speakers and only a few French, and in other parts the reverse is true. Hence dvd covers in Canada have both languages by law, and some manufacturers offer shops each option to best cater to their clientele. The studios and the government want people to know what is on the shelves, and for no-one to be left out: people will then spend money.
It's not that complicated.
