Question:
Apologies if this has come up before...
Anyone got any info on the new MULHOLLAND DRIVE 2-disc set released in France...
Here's what's on it...
• Le Making Of
• 2 documentaries: "Spécial Lynch" et "L'Art de David Lynch"
• L'interview du compositeur Angelo Badalamenti
• Les interviews de collaborateurs de David Lynch
• La conférence du Festival de Cannes 2001
• Un reportage photo
• Le lien internet
• La bande-annonce
• Un chapitrage aléatoire
I'm assuming the documentary "L'Art de David Lynch" is in fact "Pretty as a Picture: Art of David Lynch"
http://www.mondo-digital.com/davidlynch.html
This would make a fine extra...
Of course, there's the matter of the subtitles...
Anyone seen any reviews of the French disc yet, or has got any info..?
Thanks...
wes
That amazon.fr contents list is not accurate. I had a look at it in FNAC yesterday (and I'm going to buy it today) and the contents are correct here :
http://www.dvd-fr.com/dvd/fiche.php3?id=5858
I'll not be able to watch it until the weekend, but it looks as though the subs are not forced (although I'll not be able to tell until I try it !).
edit - There's some more info on http://www.dvdrama.net/news.php?5267 - it's in French, but use babelfish or something to translate it ! ;)
Be careful, it seems the quality of the picture on the DVD is pretty bad. DVD bonus is also buggy (philips 710)
Where did you read about that ?
Do you know any online reviews ?
Just got the French edition of Mulholland Drive. First I must point out that since I haven't yet seen this movie, I did't poke around too much (menus are animated and could spoil some parts of the movie).
There seems to be about 1 hour of extra material on the second disc. Cannes conference, some interviews, making of. Also there is some text, but since I don't understand french... Good news about these extras are that they are in english (not dubbed as I feared).
The movie itself is presented with a great 16:9 (1.85) transfer. Audio options are: DD5.1 french & DD5.1 english. The bad news is that by choosing the english audio track there are forced french subtitles, which don't appear if you choose the french audio track. I tried everything but couldn't remove the subtitles (my DVD-player is LG 4730). Now I refuse to watch this movie with the distracting subtitles on, so it seems I'll have to order the R1 version.:(

Can you change audio tracks via the remote whilst the film is playing ? You could choose the french track from the menu, then switch to the english then ! ;)

Sorry but I already tried that, you can't change audio/subtitles on the fly:(
Here's summary of the extras:
-Silence on tourne (24 min) [making of]
-Conference de presse (18 min)
-Entretiens exclusifs: Mary Sweeney (6 min), Angelo Badalamenti (17 min) [interviews]
-Sur les lieux su tournage (french text)
-Qui sont-ils (biographies)
-Un lien vers David Lynch (contains link to www.davidlynch.com)
what about the 2 docs? "Spécial Lynch" et "L'Art de David Lynch" , they're not part of the 24 minute making of? Still hoping it's the Pretty as a Picture doc.

Nope, the making of looked like it only contained material from Mulholland Drive (can't verify this since don't wanna check it out before the movie). Also the disc one doesn't contain any extras.

Pretty strange cause the rental R2UK has a pretty good picture quality.
Think I might buy the R4 (for around £11). It seems to have more extras than the UK R2.
Pretty as a Picture can be picked up separately.
OK, watched this over the weekend (first time I've seen the film and I was absolutely blown away :) ). OK, with regard to the discs :
First disc :
Movie
- sound is DD 5.1 (French and original with french subs - not too large to be too obtrusive, but they are forced) - does the job very well in the car crash and knocks on the door, etc. The Spanish 'Crying' sounded stunning.
- picture - does seem a little murky in the dark scenes. Sharp in the daylight scenes.
- chapter selection - cannot be done using the 'chapter forward/backward' buttons during the film. From the menu objects from the film are selected for the relevant places in the film.
- menus. Some of the best themed menus I've seen. Very well designed for style, sound and usage. Fits with the film very well.
Second disc :
Note, all the extras are in english with subtitles, except the interview with Mary Sweeney which is in spoken French and the end of the Cannes conference which shows the award ceremony which is in French.
- Making of - series of single person (usually) on-set interviews with the major actors/actresses, Lynch and the composer.
- Cannes conference - what it says on the tin ( ;) ), the press conference from Cannes . Reasonable interesting discussion including 'Home and Away' ! :D
- Interviews with composer and writer - didn't have time to watch these.
- Bio/Filmographys - all in French text.
- And also something that appeared to discuss the locations, but again it was in french !
I've not seen the R1 version to compare the picture/sound quality, but I came away from this extremely impressed (with the film and the press conference), but disappointed as Studio Canal picked up the reigns when it was dropped as a TV pilot, so therefore should have had a hell of a lot of access to publicity materials, etc. There's also the problem with the forced subs ! :nono:
Anyway, for me, this cost around €28 and I'd give this DVD a 8/10 (on the strength of the film and the making of and conference coverage).
Over at DVDtimes on the region1 review, somebodys put a comment saying that theres going to be a 2-disc set released in region1 and that the news was on the offical Lynch members website. I've not got access so I havent a clue, anybody confirm this?
The two advertised docs are def not there, unless they're Easter Eggs; the packaging does promise "bonus caches" but I can't find anything. Well, that's not strictly true - on the Disc 1 Audio menu I can select the top left hand button but nothing seems to happen & on the Disc 2 menu if you select the ? in the bottom right hand corner you get the DVD credits.
Anybody find anything else? I paid £20 for it from Amazon France & it's well worth it. Nice 4 fold digi-pack case with Lynch's ten clues (in French!) on it as well...
