Monsters Inc Vs Shrek
Question:

ok, im comtemplating in buying the Monsters Inc DVD.
ive always been more of a Anime person, i wasnt brought up on Disney like most of my friends were. Out of the most popular ive only seen Aladdin and Lion King, and i think Beauty and the Beast but i cant rememeber it.
ive seen Shrek and really enjoyed it. These two films went head to head at the oscars and Shrek got more recognition right ?
Just the thought of buying a Disney DVD makes me a little queasy
but apart from whether im gonna like the film or not i thought it would be interesting to see which you think is better and why ?
(or maybe they shouldnt be compared).

Answers:

Apart from the way they are made they are really both diffrenet films.
Haveing young kids I have to sit through both a number of times, & both stand up to (very) repeated viewings. I think that Monsters Inc is the sligthly better film & dvd, but if you really want the best get the Toy Story films!

Answers:

Buy them all - and Bug's Life... they're all fantastic.

I actually prefered Shrek (more stuff in there that could be appreciated by a grown up IMO), but Monsters INC is a quality film too - the characterisation is stunning and the animation is unmatched, I'd say, anywhere.
I've only seen it once though and am hoping there's more layers to it on a repeat viewing, otherwise it won't be something I'd watch too often...
Good story too - if you like that kind of thing ;)
Still say Pixar's best is the original Toy Story though.

Answers:

Although I enjoyed Shrek a great deal at the cinema I have found it a slightly less satisfying experience on repeated viewings.
I thought Monsters Inc. was, like all the other Pixar releases so far, excellent and I expect it will stand many a viewing.
I hate comparing movies like this but if I had to choose one it would be Monsters Inc. I think the voice cast, animation and story are all superior to Shrek.

Slightly off-topic:
Admittedly it's not completely animated, but Stuart Little 2 has astonishing CGI, especially on the birds..
:shocker:
Film's a bit dung though - thank god it's running time is a little over an hour..

Answers:

Ice Age all the way for me.

Answers:

Shrek, although I did enjoy Monsters Inc!

Answers:

As mentioned, Ice Age is better than both, but of the two listed I'd go for Monster's Inc.

Don't worry Keyser all of Pixars films are quality and well worth getting. They are genius and I think this benefits from the fact that the guys at Pixar seem to be a bit out of it. :D
I am not a big fan of Disney animated films either, even the so called classics such as Sleeping Beauty etc I find deadly dull but i suppose they are for kids so as long as they like them so be it :)
Though saying that I do like Winnie The Pooh :smokin:
I was also never brought up with Disney stuff either but more the classic Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry cartoons. I wish there was a nice boxset with these in it :(
From the two you have asked about I would say pick Monsters Inc - i definitely enjoyed this the most.
Never seen Ice Age - looks great though

Yeah shrek doesn't stand up to repeated viewings.
I do like pixar stuff but bugs life was only so so.
Of the recent disney, dinosaur was well poo but the underrated atlantis was surprisingly good because it has basically the same story as Laputa ... but completely americanised ... and the ending is very good.

Answers:

Shrek for me. I've watched it many times and I still enjoy it. One of
Eddie Murphy's best performances IMHO.
Agree with the comments on Atlantis. Top film. Love the cranky old
switchboard operator who is totally unfazed by anything. :)
Pixar's films are great as well. I'd give the edge to the Toy Story's
over Monsters Inc but it's close.

Whys that ?
Id buy a Disney dvd any day of the week rather than buy some of the utter dross thats out there.
Disney stuff IS quality..
But I do like shrek , it is an amazing piece of work. Ice age is a grower for me and the kids. Will still by buying it along with Monsters Inc. I find some kids movies never lose their qualities that attracted you to them in the first place, unlike most mainstream rubbish!

Good to see a vote for Altantis - definitely one of Disney's most underrated efforts. Interesting comparison too - I haven't seen Laputa yet but was struck by similarities with Princess Mononoke when I saw Altantis.

I'd go for any other film in history rather than Shrek :( I thought it was awful where as Monster's Inc

SimonI - Wait 'til you get your copy of laputa, you'll see what I mean.
Some of the face painting and weapons design did look like princess mononoke ... I agree!

IMHO of the recent CG films - Monster's Inc > Ice Age > Shrek
from the trailer on Monster's Inc Finding Nemo looks awesome and seems like it could be very funny also

Shrek, Monsters Inc then Ice Age for me. Get them all, I say :)

Answers:

Monsters Inc for me, I just didn't find Shrek to be that funny but I had a constant smile on my face when watching Monsters Inc.

I'm a huge fan of these animations and Beauty and the Beast is the best IMHO, and I can't wait for the DVD release.
These new fangled CGI 'toons though are superb. Love 'em all! A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, Shrek, Monsters Inc and Ice Age..all superb. Antz is OK. The Iron Giant is very good.
Ones that didn't hit the spot for me were the likes of Atlantis, Titan A.E., Prince of Egypt, a few segments of Fantasia 2000 (not as good as the first). They weren't bad, just not as good as some aforementioned. I must get Princess Mononoke soon..I liked Metropolis and Akira.

I would buy them both! Monsters Inc was technically well done, with great animation. Shrek is also well animated, but has more "grown up" jokes as some people have mentioned.
I used to work in a video store and I did put Atlantis on one day to watch it (we had a playlist but I used to abandon that ;)) I found it to be quite good.
My favorite disney film of all time has to be Black Hole though (hence the username heheh)
Buy them ALL

Was highly disappointed by Shrek, and even more so on the second viewing. Just not very funny, I felt.
Monsters inc was fantastic, though. Pixar have had an amazing winning streak.
Any ideas when Finding Nemo is coming out?

Answers:

Anyway Disney didn't make Monsters Inc. Pixar did.
Disney just distibuted it. As they did Pulp Fiction, Sixth Sense,Face/Off, Con Air and countless other you proberly have in youe collection.

Shrek just didn't work for me. The voices annoyed me, and I found the movie extremely ugly to look at: the artists clearly had no comprehension of colour theory, and the characters had a wightlessness to them that I felt detracted. Plus, a satire of Disney fairytale storytelling? It's hardly a novel premise, and it's also a bit like the pot calling the kettle black.
Monsters Inc., on the other hand, I thoroughly enjoyed. I would probably consider it to be Pixar's second-weakest film (after A Bug's Life), but a weak Pixar film seems to be the equivalent of a very good film from any other studio. The overriding factor for me is that everything in it seemed to fit together, with no aspect of it (story, design, animation, voices, music etc.) overplaying the others. With Shrek, I felt that the voice actors were competing with the designers (and so on), and what resulted was a cacophony of mixed-up factors.
So, Monsters Inc. for me. I was really disappointed when it didn't win the Oscar.

If you like pastel colours, high moral standards, and fairly insipid characters, then by all means go for Monsters Inc.
If you like vivid colours, witty dialog, a good soundtrack, energetic characters, and visual gags, then go for Shrek.
I already have Shrek and am also getting Monsters Inc. After all, what I think means diddly where my child is concerned.
regards, Tim...

The reason why is probably Disney DVD is not quality stuff. They don't keep to the industry agreed standard so the DVD video symbol doesn't appear on their discs instead they use their own Disney DVD standard which lots of people have had problems with.
Has anyone else heard the story that Monster Inc (the actually company) is based on Disney. As in Monster Inc is a company that exploits children for its own profit and so does Disney. I've seen John Lassiter asked if this was true and he didn't say yes but he refused to deny it.

Answers:

Yeah shrek is basically unoriginal ... thats where the problem lies.

Shrek and Monsters INC are very different movies but they are both excellent. I say get the both of them :)
Also worth a mention is Iron Giant from Warner brothers, The Emperor's New Groove and Tarzan from Disney:)

Out of Monsters Inc vs Shrek.
Well, I prefered Shrek in the cinema to Monsters. But, like a few people have said, Monsters Inc is better for repeat viewings. Also had one of the best short intro films ever (that one with the crows on the telephone line).
Overall, I would put the 'animated films' as follows
1. Toy Story 2 (Plenty of Star Wars gags for Star Wars freek here :) )
2. Toy Story 1
3. Monsters Inc
4. Shrek & Bugs Life
6. Antz
Cheers,
Gavin

I think both are great films
While Shreak doesn't look as good as Monster's Inc, it does have some stunning moments visually, such as the castle with the dragon. But it can't compete with Monster's Inc, which has some of the best aniomation I've ever seen, and Sully just looks fantastic
Storywise they're both different, and Shrek's does appeal more to adults, but they're class anyway
On a completely different nots, I'm scared to buy any Disney DVDs apart from the Collector's editions due to the treatment they get, such as Robin Hood which I hear has been given a P&S transfer :shocker:

Answers:

Shrek was just really dull imo. Nothing happened after the first 30 minutes. Terribly boring. There was nothing fresh about it.

Have enjoyed seeing shrek several times now and am looking forward to seeing Monsters Inc on DVD.
Re the above, I have found the special editions of Disney disks top be very frustrating. The menu system is often very fragmented and it can take in excess of 30 seconds to load up an extract which might last 10 seconds or so. I don't think my Tosh has the fasted access speeds but this type of wait has only ever happened on Disney stuff.
