Bad films using blockbuster footage
Question:

Did anyone happen to catch 'Militia' last night? I didn't watch all of it but did notice that about 15 minutes of stuff taken from Terminator 2 (the Cyberdyne office assault/explosion sequence) :notworthy . At first I just thought it was using a similar setup but this was the exact same footage. I didn't watch much more of it but I was in shock to say the least.
I assume this is legal but using stuff from T2 must be damn expensive. Anyone else spotted this turning up anywhere?

Answers:

ah yes Militia - I remeber catching this on moviemax and thinking the same thing a while back - I dont know of any other examples of shot stealage, but I bet if they do exist they have Dean Cain in them too

Impostor uses footage from Starship Troopers, Gattaca and Armageddon, some quick shots of others too I think.
BUT it's NOT a bad movie :|

There is a piece of sci-fi crap called Space Mutiny (it got the Mystery Science Theater 3000 treatment) which uses footage of the huge titular ship from Battlestar Galactica. Except, in a cunning effort to disguise it, they use it upside down.

Not a film but i remember watching an episode of Jag that stole the whole terrorists with bazookas blowing up the convey scene from Clear And Present Danger

again, not a film, but there was that episode of McGuyver that stole the entire mini chase sequence from The Italian Job

I didn't realise what was going on at first, I just thought "Mmmm, nice model work for such a crappy film", then I recognised where it was from... (and it's not just the Battlestar Galactica they use, there's also various bits of battle footage spliced in there too).
Another MST3K victim that used footage from another film (although not presented as actual events in the story) was the excruciating TV movie "Overdrawn At The Memory Bank", whose lead character was obsessed with watching Casablanca at work. Never put classic films into your crappy film; it only reminds people what they could be watching (although having said that, even the gratuitous wildlife documentary footage was more entertaining than the main feature).

Damn, I remember that! Always wondered how they got away with that [then again McGuiver probably just cobbled the film together with a paperclip and an elastic band, as was his wont].

Universal used to be the worst for this, especially with their TV stuff. There are whole episodes of Bionic Man/Woman and Gemini Man that even used the same script, just changing the character names, plus one of the early eps of Knight Rider used the Damb Busting and Flood sequence from Superman. They even had Kitt push the boulder off the cliff to stop the flood water instead of the man of steel.
Deaks.

The pug ugly ship that was in a rather awfull sci-fi battle epic whose name escapes me at the moment (Bit like the Magnificent Seven in space, had The Man From Uncle playing some dark battler who seemed to be a cross between Mad Max, Han Solo and a constan Migrane) that ship appeared in one or two other unrelated shows/films as well.
Some of the 'Rag tag fugitive fleet' in Battlestar Galactica where either nicked from other films or subsequently turned up in them.
ICBW but didn't the ship from Silent Running wind up in Battlestar Galactica at one point?

That'd be Battle Beyond The Stars which is, I agree, The Magnificent Seven with ray-guns etc. But hey, where else can you see George Peppard laying the foundations for Hannibal with such typical relish?
But yeah, that ship was whack.

Didn't "Flight of the Intruder" shamelessly nick bits from Top Gun?

Steven Spielberg's TV Movie "Duel" was turned into an episode of the Incredible Hulk

I don't think so. If it did it couldn't have been bits with planes in as they were different the films.

Hot Shots 1 or 2 (can't remember which) uses footage from "Flight of the Intruder".
On a slightly better note, The Limey uses footage from "Poor Cow" as backstory for Terence Stamp's character.

NUTS!!! NUTS!!! NUUUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTSSSSSSSS!!!
I thought about watching this as it but chose Uncle Buck ( :rocker: ) instead.
Did anyone see the other Dean Cain flick on Sci-Fi Saturday night? The underwater thing. It was quite funny watching them walk around that square corridor set over and over again.

I seem to remember an episode of The A-Team which nicked the 747 coming through the glass bit of Airplane.
I thought JAG was famous for nicking bits from movies for it's action sequences. Not tht I've seen it much.

There was a Dolph Lundgren film that stole sections from another Dolph Lundgren film. Code Red or something like that. I don't really remember, the whole affair was pretty dreadful.
But this whole idea of stealing shots is an old one, going right back to the early days of cinema.

All the effect shots and a few of the sets from 'Battle' were reused in 'Space Raiders'. But they were both Roger Corman films and he is the master of reusing film sets.
In also reused the score from 'Battle beyond the Stars' countless times.
I'd hazzard a guess and say the most used bit of footage from another film would be the dinosaurs in the silent version of 'The lost world'. ( the Lizards with fins stuck on thier back) by the 1950's the film had gone into the public domain and just about every z-grade Sci-Fi movie used the footage,

The "Battle Beyond The Stars" footage also turned up in an appealingly dreadful Corman flick called "Galaxy of Terror"

Yeesss, the fantastic Galaxy Of Terror, what a quality piece of garbage. The best thing about that was the fact that Jonie from Happy Days got her head blown off. Fantastic stuff.:rocker: :rocker: :rocker: :rocker:

The end of 'Blade Runner' (the original theatrical version) famously uses out-takes from 'The Shining' - neither of which are exactly bad films, I hasten to add :)

In contrast, 'We Were Soldiers' uses footage from 'Flight of the Intruder'. A bad film nicking stuff from a bad film.

Although it's more endearing than bad, Joe Dante's debut (as co-director with Allan Arkush) <I>Hollywood Boulevard</I> recycles one hell of a lot of footage - most notably the previous year's <I>Death Race 2000</I>. Dante and Arkush bet Roger Corman that they could make a complete professional 35mm feature for less than $30,000, and Dante's trailer-editing experience turned out to be invaluable: he'd built up a huge collection of explosions and vehicle crashes that they could never have afforded to stage themselves!
And the late lamented Scala once showed a double bill of <I>Android</I> and <I>Forbidden World</I> precisely because they used the same sets with slightly different lighting!
The <I>Limey/Poor Cow</I> thing is fascinating - I think that's the first time anyone's ever tried that! For those who don't know what I'm talking about, the film features brief flashbacks to the Terence Stamp character's past life in the Sixties, but instead of staging them himself, Steven Soderbergh used clips from Ken Loach's 1967 film <I>Poor Cow</I> (with Loach's permission and encouragement) so you're actually watching the real three-decades-younger Stamp, which is a decidedly uncanny experience.

Preston Sturges did a similar thing with 'The Sin of Harold Diddlebrook'. The film starred Harold Lloyd, and used footage of his younger self in 'The Freshman'.
Also, 'Apocalypse Now' includes a production still from 'Reflections in a Golden Eye' to show a younger Brando in military uniform.
