Question:
Any suggestions as to movies that use studios as their central backdrop ?
Not dressed sets like say BTTF, but ones that are actually set in studios that use the main outdoor sets as backdrops

The Player
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Not really set in the studio but State and Main is a movie about making a movie.
Moving to the DVD and Movie forum...
Living in Oblivion.
Another film about making a film. Very funny too. Steve Buscemi is class.
Scream 3:oh-hum:
Not exactly a movie but the TV series U.F.O. certainly saved a few pennies during shooting thanks to their setting.

Wrong forum, mate. I think you meant to post this over in the "personal problems" one...
"The Big Picture" highly underrated film from Christopher Guest - now on DVD! :D
You could also try "Postcards from the Edge" which is set in and around Hollyweird including some hilarious jokes at the expense of the back-projection process & painted back-drops! ;)
Also, "Swimming with sharks" - bit of a stretch this but set within a film studio all the same!
Then there's always "Ed Wood"
and all the others already mentioned of course! ("Scream 3" is actually a very good example)

Would "SWEET LIBERTY" (Alan Alda, Micheal Caine, Michelle Pfeiffer, Bob Hoskins) count?
Were they filming on a back lot or on location? Can't remember now, it's been a while since I saw this.

But not actually released (in R1 format) until 08/10 though :(
There will be some extras though ..... see here (http://www.dvdboxoffice.com/description.asp?id=B62A12D9-4692-4B1D-98AA-79CE9F577088&browser=other&pid=90024988&country=cad) :)
Truffaut - La nuit americaine
...Vincente Minnelli's The Bad And The Beautiful (uses MGM studios)
and Two Weeks In Another Town (uses the Rome Cinecittį studios)...
...Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard (uses Paramount studios)...
...William A. Wellman's 1937 A Star Is Born...
...George Cukor's 1954 A Star Is Born (uses WB studios)...
...George Marshall's The Goldwyn Follies (uses Goldwyn studios)...
...to name but a few...
. . . :o . . .
The 1942 film Sullivan's Traveles is about a director trying to make a film called....O'Brother Where art though.
Or even Sullivan's Travels being about the (fictional) film O Brother Where Are Thou. ;)
8 1/2 is probably the finest film-about-a-film ever made (Criterion's excellent 2-disc set is a mere £19.99 at CD-Wow), but Peeping Tom, All That Jazz, Contempt (aka Le Mepris) and The Stunt Man also slot into the same sub-category (and are brilliant films to boot).
Would 'The Truman Show' count?
Part of the Godfather?
Mulholland Drive?
Did everyone forget Pee Wee Hermans Big Adventure?
Blazing Saddles.
You all forgot two satiric comedies, Muse and Simone, they're great.
Who Framed Roger Rt? Its been so long since I saw this....any word on the dvd rls btw?
Get Shorty ?
Shadow of the Vampire?
Day for Night and Man Bites Dog.
Wes Craven's New Nightmare
Austin Powers: GoldMember
Hooper with Burt Reynolds
Some of the scenes in "Night Moves" are set during the filming of an action movie.
Over The Rainbow - I used to have this on VHS, it's a quite mad Chevy Chase film (also with Carrie Fisher) set on the production of The Wizard Of Oz.
Does Singin' in the Rain count?
Bollywood Calling - A fairly enjoyable light-hearted parody of the Indian film industry.
It's just a pity the DVD release is so poor :oh-hum:.
How about Scream 3 ?
Why has this suddenly been bumped to the top ?
anyway...
The Majestic
Gremlins 2 (sort of?)
Soderbergh's Full Frontal
The really rather funny Bowfinger... well, I thought it was ;)
"Does Singin' in the Rain count?"
...but of course!
...and Anchors Aweigh (http://www.dvdauthority.com/Reviews.asp?ReviewID=142) (MGM Studios)... and Hollywood Canteen (http://www.dvdlaser.com/search/detail.cfm?id=16446) (WB Studios)... and "Hollywood And Vine"... and Star Spangled Rhythm (http://www.digitallyobsessed.com/showreview.php3?ID=3202) (Paramount Studios)... and...
