Kurosawa's Sugata Sanshiro complete and on DVD
Question:

This might be of interest to Kurosawa fans:
The following is a (rough) translation of an article in this mornings edition of a major Dutch newspaper:
***
Kurosawa film complete again
The almost complete first version of Japanese director Akira Kurosawa's debutfilm will be released on DVD in october. 15 minutes from the original movie disappeared in the 1940s. These scenes have been found in a Russian filmarchive.
Sugata Sanshiro was Kurosawa's directing debut in 1943. The motion picture tells the story of a judo apprentice and his struggle with the hard world of his sport.
After the Japanese film expert Tomonori Saiki had heard about a Russian filmarchive with Japanese films, he took a look in their vaults. Saiki found the major part of the missing images from Sugata Sanshiro.
***
The 15 minutes mentioned are consistent with this quote from iMDB:
Although originally released in Japan at 97 minutes, it was reedited and re-released in Japan in 1952 at 80 minutes. This 80-minute version is all that is currently available, and it includes some slight changes in the film's structure as well as its running time.
I haven't been able to find any news relating to this on the internet, and the article did not mention any sources.
Anyone who knows something, and can expand on this, or discount it? Or is this old, recycled news?

Anything would be better than the crappy Mei-Ah R3 version that I currently own so I hope it's accurate info (extra footage or not) :)

Might be worth a mention as well ->
Apparently, Rhapsody in August will be released december 5th in Holland. I'm not sure whether this is the Kurosawa flick and if it will be an improvement over the UK-disc, but I thought it could be worth keeping track of...
Anyway, I don't know anything about Sanshiro being released in The Netherlands. Having said that, I also cannot imagine that a Dutch company would release such an extremely low-profile film. Maybe Moskwood is crazy enough

Oscar, the article can now be found online here (http://archief.ad.nl/artikel?text=kurosawa&SORT=presence&ED=ola&PRD=3m&SEC=%2A&SO=%2A&FDOC=0).
In Dutch only, mind.
Still haven't found any other sources for this online.

...voorwaar: opwindend nieuws!... but -dammit!- why don't they say where the DVD of this 'complete' version will be released...? the Netherlands? (fat chance!)... Japan? (more likely)... USA (possibly)...
. . . . . .

For those who read Dutch (Oscar, Hendrik), I have found two more articles from Dutch newspapers online. Well, actually it's twice the same article.
First article (http://www.telegraaf.nl/crazylife/teksten/crazylife.film.kurosawa.japanse.html)
Second article (http://www.trouw.nl/ANP/SHO-CUL/ANP-300802-169-anp.html)
As I said, the articles are both the same, probably literally copied from a press release from Dutch press office ANP.
The first article mentions the original source, Japanese press office Kyodo. So presumably it's going to be a Japanese DVD release.
