Babylon 5, R2, S1. Any details?
Question:

Does anybody know any details of the Babylon5 region 2 season 1 release yet?
Other than date and price I mean?
Thanks,
Sb

Answers:

Its identical to the R1.

Answers:

As far as i can tell from the play site, the region 2 is 4:3 P&S and no extras. The region 1 is listed as widscreen and a few extras.
Can anyone confirm the exact detail differences once and for all?

:shocker: I hope to God that you're wrong :(

I'd like to say that WB couldnt be stupid enough to do that... but look what they did with the R4 release of the Gathering/In the Beginning...

Answers:

dumb question, but will the season 1 set include the gathering or do I have to buy that as well?

IF this is true, and it is probably just that Play have no details yet, I will have to cancel my order, even at this price.

Answers:

The Region 2 version is cheaper than Region 1, but yes it's 4:3 according to Play.
If the details are correct at Play about the Region 2 being Fullscreen, why would WB do this differently to the R1?

Just checked J Michael Straszcinsky's (sp) message board and there's a question about it, to which he answers:
"Insofar as I know, they are the same in both versions, WB has never indicated that they are doing anything different for the overseas market.
jms"
Here's hoping!

Perhaps it will be worth holding off on pre-orders, and waiting nearer release time...

Not when we have pre-ordered them for about £36 :)

Good grief! Now all they need to do is let us know it has an English soundtrack...

I actually prefer the fact that the picture is going to be in 4:3. There wasn't any pan-and-scanning on the tv series (which was shot on super 35mm, and thus 1.85) and the CGI was rendered for 4:3. The R1 anamorphic version will be cropping the top and bottom of the CG, which is a bad idea.
Babylon 5 was just fine in the 4:3 format. If it aint broke, don't fix it.
Any place apart from Play247 saying the same thing, by the way?

hmm, i hope Straszcinsky's message board is right :)

I was always under the impression that B5 was designed for future widescreen transmission, and the the CG shots had extra rending done off to the sides where the widescreen was. In the title sequences weren't clips form the show used with the extra stuff down the sides?

Although the title sequence was of course always done in widescreen, the CGI in the title sequence was only rendered at the resolution neccessary, so it will still have to be upscaled for anamorphic.

There is official news from Warner about the B5 release over at The R2 Project. Here's the main info...and look at that price!
Warner Brothers have announced the first series of "Babylon 5" for release October 14th priced at £44.99 for the 6 disk set. According to the PR the series will be presented 1.77 anamorphic widescreen with a DD 5.1 soundtrack. Extras will be:
Introduction and audio commentary on 2 key episodes by series creator J. Michael Straczynski
"Behind Babylon 5" dossier of documentaries: "The Making of Babylon 5" and "Back to Babylon 5"
Enter The Universe of Babylon 5": take a station tour and explore the humans, aliens, political situations, scientific data tech files, weaponry and hardware of this unique futuristic era

Sounds good... And great pricing.
If true it is time to cancel those misprice pre-orders and the German one too. Not enough difference :)
