[R1 Monsters Inc] Problem on disc 2?
Question:

Anybody-else got their Monsters Inc yet?
Got mine from Play this morning, but my DVD drive won't recognise disc 2. Disc 1 plays normally (and looks cool on me new 19" monitor too!!).
Oh, I'm using a Hollywood+ card to playback..

Answers:

Disc 2 plays fine (although I haven't checked it on my PC yet) but I am getting a nasty freeze on disk 1 - at around the 84 minutes mark, from the part where Mike asks Sully to come with him because he has a surprise.
Disc might just need cleaning, I will have to check it again - otherwise it will have to go back. (never experienced a problem quite like it before)

Answers:

Just checked disc 2 on me dad's DVD and it plays fine - looks like it's a prob with the H+ drivers..

That's the Layer Change. No ideally placed, but it only pauses for about a second on my player.

I had a feeling it was the layer change - but my machine pauses... and never starts again. First time I have ever had this problem (Pioneer machine)

Answers:

How is the sound, i heard the DD5.1 is supposed to be very good. I wonder if there is much difference between that and R2 DTS.

Answers:

Anyone notice a bit of distortion on the soundtrack?
Chapter 23, on the Waternoose dialogue "...it's all about presence!"?
At first thought it was my centre speaker ( ) but I played it again in plain stereo & was still there. Also tried optical & coaxial outputs but they too are the same.
Cheers, Paul

This sounds like the problem pioneers had with R1 Dinosaurs, also from Disney.
Not a good sign :(

It's in setup, asks you to choose your version!

Answers:

No - the Canadian version of the film (with an added French 5.1 soundtrack) does not have the full screen version.
It also seems to be missing the sound effects only 5.1 soundtrack.
It also contains the 2 shorts and the outtakes on disc one (as well as repeating them on disc 2)
I suspect it is to do with the branching to show french text in the movie - as well as the traditional opening credits, Monsters Inc may also show all newspapers and signs in French too. (See the international release featurette on the second disc)
I have yet to try, but if all printed language has been re-rendered to show French text, it stands to reason Pixar wouldn't want to rerender it twice - once for Widescreen and once for Full Screen (with the characters repositioned).

Argh! My disc 2 plays fine, but disc 1 won't load! :brickwall
It locks up when it starts trying to load the menu - it just locks on title 10 and the title symbol on my player flickers on and off (Pioneer 444). :( I guess I'll have to send it back to CD Wow. I can't see any visible problems with the disc - I hope it's a one off and not a compatibility problem!

Lets hope my new pioneer dvd player doesn't have any problems!
Is it just pioneer dvd players with the problem at the moment?

i have a pioneer 444 and have ordered this from dvdsoon, keep you all posted. the only problem i have ever had is with jeepers creepers r1.....would not play at all

Pioneer 727F -
I should point out that I have the Canadian disc (I notice there is a lot of pioneer problems quotes in this thread)
On the whole I've been more than happy with my Pioneer - the downconversion isn't the best but I've never had a disc refuse to play: the only problems disc I have encountered is the Family Guy second disc which locks on one of the episodes (but which works on my PS2).
Edit I should also point out my player had no problem with the 2 disc Dinosaur release from Disney either.

Previous Pixar disks (which I have always got from Canada) included the sound effects only tracks - these are highly entertaining and I would be disappointed to find this feature omitted from Monsters, Inc. - does anyone know if the DVD Soon version will omit this track? Is there a "Version Francais" as well as an English version in Canada?

Answers:

anybody got a pioneer 656 player and this dvd yet?

Answers:

Well you can cycle through the audio tracks using your remote and there is definitely no sound-effects only track on the canadian release.
Also there all the text is in English - including the opening titles (unusual on a Disney release) even if French is selected from the menu as the soundtrack.
So why wasn't the Full-Frame version included? The dropped 5.1 sound effects track is replaced by the French track?
Does anybody know?

Answers:

Utterly bizarre! The US one has both full screen and effects only track.
Can't understand why just having a French audio track would need to remove both!

I have a Pioneer 626 and have watched all of disk1 with no problems.
Haven't tried disk 2 yet though.
Oh, I have the Canadian version btw.

This is another prime example of why retailers like Play should advertise and display THE ACTUAL PRODUCT they intend to supply. There are too many titles with too many differences (besides the bilingual covers!) in the specs to make the consumer assume that the R1 Canadian versions will be identical to the R1 US release.

Answers:

It's definitely put a new element into the decision on where to buy your R1s - it was not that long ago that the Canadian suppliers (including Play) invariably supplied the same product as the US - even if it was an actual Canadian version (I'm thinking of the Toy Story box set) it was effectively identical.
Now that Canadian versions are starting to differ - and more importantly, lose features compared to the US releases - I'm going to take more care over where I get my R1s. Since DVD Soon have not shipped my Monsters, Inc. yet I think I'll look for a US alternative - any suggestions folks?

I have the problem with the 1st disc (freezing at layer change, between Ch.30 and 31). Hitting the next chapter button moves the disc on. Haven't tried disc 2 yet.
Happens on my Pioneer DV-717, but disc works fine on Pioneer DV-444. :(
Oh, and it's the Canadian R1 version.

Just to add to the growing Pioneer woes..... I have the same Disk 1 : Ch30/31 freeze on my 525. What happened with the Dinasours problem disk, did they re-issue?

Pure speculation I know but will this only affect the R1 version.

Thanks for posting that - I've just had a mail from CD-Wow saying that they are sending me a replacement copy and an envelope to return my copy to them. Fingers crossed that this new copy will work ok - it sounds like I'm having a different problem to that others are having as my copy won't load at all and the main problem people seem to be having is with the layer change.

Strange, I have the Canadian version and both discs play perfectly on my Sammy 709 and I've pretty much exhausted both discs :)

I've got my replacement copy from CD-Wow now and I've played disc 1 with no problems. The layer change was longer than I usually see at a couple of seconds, but other than that it played fine.

Anyone else (I'm thinking those with the freezing problem) either exchanged their discs or enquired about it with their supplier?

Answers:

Got in touch with Future Entertainment, they claim to have no knowledge of the freezing problem (hmmm, I find that difficult to believe), but they seem happy to replace the disc. Unfortunately thats an expense for me.

Got mine from Future Ent and have had no probs with it, Disk 1 plays fine, and so fat Disk 2 is ok too, the layer change on Disk 1 is in an odd place tho!, about 5 mins before the end of the film!

Answers:

I received my copy yesterday and will watch it tonight, but my friend who has got the same machine as me (Pioneer 717) said his froze on the layer change too.
My Dinosaur (and his) works fine on our machines.
However, I bought Atlantis CE from Future and it stumbled on one section of the film when they're in a convoy coming over a hill toward the camera. The layer change was much later in the film. I got in touch with FUTURE and they said send it back. They sent me another one and it was worse. The same section was still bad but the disc crashed near the end and ejected itself. FUTURE said that aparently it was a compatibility issue. The fact that it had been tested on 4 (thats FOUR!) different machines made no difference. Posted the problem on about 4 boards and no one else seemed to have the problem. Then it took some pushing to get my refund.
If mines dodgy i might go straight to the Disney DVD fault site as they are great and will replace the discs even though we are in the UK. They did it with my Mulan which completley corrupted between the first and second viewing.

When I started collected R1 DVD's, I used Amazon, as they are safe, sound, reasonable prices & customer service is second to none.
I then started using the various cheaper alternatives.
DVD Box Office, Soon, ********* etc.
Some better than others, parcels went missing, French sleeves blah blah.
I now am an Amazon customer again, and thankful for it.
Proper R1 US DVD's with no hassle.
Monster inc. £12.90 delivered, if the £/$ remains as strong as it has been getting.
If a parcel goes missing (which they never do ;) ), send em an e-mail after the delivery time has elapsed.. 2 weeks.. not 8 as with Soon, and they re-ship it for nowt.
Nice.

Also I have never had any problems with a disc including Dinosaur.

Just finished my R1 (US from *********) copy on my Pioneer 717 and it does freeze on the layer change. You just have to press the chapter skip or fast forward. I have to say I'm not worried as you don't miss any footage and the picture doesn't break up or anything. Obviously it shouldn't happen but I guess the Pioneer players are so precise (:p ) that this slips 'em up.
Still, cracking film (which obviously i bought for my kid...and he/she'll love it...when I have one. Ahem!) and unless Disney issues some kind of recall or something I'm not gonna send it back. (Seems a bit pointless as everyone with a Pioneer seems to be having the same probs.)
Peace out peeps, I just gotta check my closet...:shocker:
P.S. I checked on my parents LG budget model from Tescos and it doesn't freeze! Go figure!
Right, time for Blade.

I have 2 Pioneers F727 daisy-chained together and the Canadian discs play fine on both machines.
The layer-change is probably a longer pause than normal but is still under a second and plays fine.

I have a Pioneer 525 and I have the exact same problem at the layer change. If I press the forward button for a second it continues to play ... first disk I have ever had problems with.

Got the Canadian R1 version from DVDsoon, film plays okay on MICO. Had a few problems accessing some of the shorts and with the menus. I had this problem with Tarzan DVD aswell.

I bought the canadian version from my mate who couldn't get it to play on his wharfedale. He also had trouble playing the tigger movie (r1). I played it on my sony and it played fine. Just to try it out, I lent it to another friend who also has a wharfe and he had trouble as well, it just wouldn't load.
He persevered and using the skip button, got it to the menu and then the movie played. However, about 5-10 mins from the end it started pixilating badly. I think that's when the layer change is but I'm not sure.
