Question:
Just noticed EZYDVD have The Red Shoes and The Importance of Being Ernest on preorder, but look at the images here (http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/221448/id=ZOm6Y:agFdE) and here (http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/221446/id=ZOm6Y:agFdE).
Is this a case of images conveniently lifted for illustrative purposes or should this be posted in the bargain forums???
nope.
firstly criterion only release dvds in north america (and armageddon doesn't count)
secondly the disc is PAL and all criterion are NTSC
But they have released a Canadian version i.e Traffic.
And R2 The Rock "Deluxe Edition" is actually a criterion, even has criterion menus and logo.
Having only checked the The Red Shoes link, it's not the Criterion. The Armageddon "R2 Crit" cover was more subtle about its nod to Criterion and carried the same special features.
The Red Shoes Criterion carries the following special features:
Audio Commentary By Film Historian Ian Christie
Interviews With Marius Goring, Moira Shearer, Jack Cardiff, Brain Easdale, Martin Scorsese
Jeremy Irons Reads Excerpts From Powell & Pressburger's Novelization
Martin Scorsese's Collection Of The Red Shoes Memorabilia
Collection Of Rare Publicity & Behind The Scenes Production Stills
Theatrical Trailer
Powell And Pressburger Filmography with Film Clips And Stills
Whereas the one listed on that link looks like the one that already exists as an R2
Edge
1. canada is part of north america
2. the rock is not a criterion release, it's one of the disney companies.

Why doesn't it count??
because it wasn't released by criterion, they just licenced the extras to disney (in exchange for them letting criterion have the film in the first place). in the same way that the shining isn't a bbc release just because it contains a bbc2 documentary.
Wont these be the same as the Carlton releases here. I think these were released with limited extras but still not a patch on the Criterions.
The issues with "Criterion" disks in other countries are
- UK releases are Disney ones as mentioned above they allow Criterion to release in the US and then they have extras to be used elsewhere eg Armageddon, Rock, Chasing Amy in UK and Aus
- Canadian releases are again recent titles where Alliance has the rights to the film eg Traffic (its a USA Film now part of Universal but distribution rights in Canada are owned by Alliance), same with Royal Tenebaums which is Disney but again released by Alliance (expect this will come out in UK packaged as Disney - Criterion).
For older and foreign films Criterion only have US or North American rights.

Yes, just like with Royal Tenenbaums, released by Buena Vista, but still the material is produced by Criterion, who cares who releases them, main thing you get the same stuff.
Don't forget, however, the Madman Videos R4 disks of Walkabout and Rififi are, essentially, duplicates of the Criterion versions...

So many films, so little time...
