Editions Montparnasse
Question:

I recieved the Editions Montparnasse release of La Regle Du Jeu today - didn't even know my order had been processed or that the company had any in stock, but there you go! - and popped it into the DVD player and it looks fantastic - subtitled documentary and everything.
So does anyone know if there are any other releases by this company that I should check out? Is there a website for them etc? Thanks.

Answers:

Their website is http://www.editionsmontparnasse.fr/
Drole de Drame is another french classic that they do (though i haven't seen it yet).
They also have a nice line in old US horror and noir movies, like :Cat People, I walked with a Zombie, Leopard Man, The Body Snatcher, Macao, Out of the Past, Angel Face as well as the wonderful western Johnny Guitar

Answers:

where did you order it from Assilem23?
i've been checking all the french websites that i know (amazon.fr; fnac) but they all list it as unavailable?
thanks

I say, I recommend these highly. Another Lewton classic, "Curse of the Cat People", has also been issued on DVD by the same company. All are most certainly as good as they get on home video for the time being. "Isle of the Dead" has been made available on VHS, but not DVD. Alas, there is no sign of my personal favourite in this glorious cycle, "The Seventh Victim".
Montparnasse has also issued a number of sensational Fred-and-Ginger films from the '30s ("Top Hat", "Swing Time", "Follow the Fleet") on DVD. I regret to say that I have found these difficult to obtain, and therefore cannot offer an opinion, old bean.

I dare say that I should have mentioned this a moment ago, but I should add that the same label has also made the "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1956) and "The Thing" (1951) available on DVD, old bean.

All in stock at Cinestore and will set you back about £35 for all three plus shipping.

Thanks..... I don't suppose you have them by chance? I want to know if the subs are burnt on like some EU releases of English language films are.

No, my ballroom dancing days are thankfully still ahead of me but I have other Montparnasse discs and as Hendrik says, the subs are optional on them.

All the subtitles are optional in the discs i mentioned in my post above.
A word of caution on their Invasion of the Body Snatchers . It is apparently p&s, though the film was made in widescreen (2:1 according to Imdb).
As they say at dvdfr.com:Horreur et désespoir : le film est en Pan&Scan ! Après le générique en format respecté, l'image est recadrée en 1.33 !

Answers:

There is an R1 widescreen version of 'Body Snatchers' available for under £10

I say, thank you for the tip. I shall investigate forthwith, old bean.

Oh, I say, my apologies. I had not realised that, vieil haricot!

I say, this is the version of which I have a copy. It is a double-sided disc, with a "full-frame" abomination on one side, and a non-anamorphic widescreen version on the other (at 2.35:1, if I remember correctly). As the print used for the latter fails to cut the mustard, I had hoped - indeed, dared to presume - that the more recent Montparnasse PAL release would best it with little trouble. My hopes are niw dashed, old bean!
