Question:
http://www.dvdboxoffice.com have the first season of Due South available for preorder - but they say it's a three DVD boxset.
So either these DVDs are double-sided or this set could turn out a real mess.
I liked the first season too, but 3 discs for an hour show?!
Or maybe it's only the first half of the season - ala CSI. More likely double sided, I fear. Hopefully it'll be better than the previous season VHS releases that missed episodes out and were of generally poor quality.
It would be really expensive for just half of a season. 44.91 for eleven episodes would be too much - even for a big fan like me.

They didn't miss any episodes - they were just in the wrong order - the missing season one episode is on one of the tapes of the second season if I remember correctly.
But the quality really was bad - even for VHS.

Ah, I didn't get the S2 ones, it was just so bad. I thought two eps were missing - could be wrong, though, I didn't even get through them all. I waited for BBC repeats.
Been waiting a long time for this on DVD, can't wait.
I got all the VHS boxes - but I won't hesitate to buy the DVDs - unless they are really messed up.
I never understood how one of the best shows of the ninetys managed to get cancelled three times.
So long as they release at least all of S1 + 2 I'll be happy. S3 was good, but not classic like S1 + 2. I especially want a decent version of the episode on the train with Leslie Neilson.... all together now "we're gonna ride forever!" .... joyously funny TV.
I didn't like the new "Ray" and the new wolf was also a disappointment - but I'll still get all seasons.
The train two-parter and the "Veronica's Secret" two-parter were my favourite episodes. I really didn't like the end of the final episode - those "what happened to everybody" segments were just silly.
Yeah, I agree on Lincon being the better dog. I get laughed at for saying (and knowing this!) - but Lincon could act, whereas Draco sort of just stood around. I think the people who made the show knew too - Draco featured a lot less than Lincon did.
For all the sad sacks (like myself!) here is a website which'll tell you everything you need to know about this fine canine actor! http://home.hiwaay.net/~warydbom/duesouth/lincoln.htm

Due South is just one of those shows - you either hate it or you are a big fan. That's probably why it only had three seasons - not enough 'normal' viewers.
I've found some more info:
This is from http://www.canadiandvdgroup.com/ :
(August 13th 2002) Some Canadian DVD news this morning. Alliance Atlantis will be releasing the complete first season of Due South on DVD. Scheduled to be released on October 29th 2002, the 3 disc set will contain all 22 episodes of the first season. Features and audio tracks are still to be determined at this time.
(August 16th 2002) A lot of Email came in after the announcement of Due South on DVD. Some new information came in on it, but as it is being worked on as we speak, so this could change. Right now what can be added to the statement given out on the last update is that it will contain an English and French Dolby Surround 2.0 track. There aren't any special features planned for this set either. :oh-hum:
For the numerous people who have been asking if this is for Region 1. Yes it is. We only cover Region 1 on this site. The product however is exclusive to Canada for the moment thus, people from the U.S. will have to order it. You can go to the links page to see which online site can ship it to you.
Finally, this isn't a rumor. This is straight from Alliance Atlantis. Some retailers may actually already have this on their week's new sell sheet.
Has anybody found any new info on this ?
It's only a few weeks until it is released and I don't want to order it until it's been confirmed that the three discs are double-sided or that it's actually a six DVD set.
www.paulgross.org
according to them it is the full season. DVDBo also say that. I guess they are flippers BUT WHO CARES??!! All those emails I sent asking for a release were worth it :D
My last posting was a little unclear - I would be very happy with both three double-sided discs or a six DVD set.
What I'm worried about is that they might try to get all the episodes on three single-sided discs.
I don't want to spend that money on a set with VCDlike picture quality.
Your guess is as good as mine. You could email alliance or post on the canadian message board. Sorry not to be more help :)
also it may be better waiting for the r2 set:
Momentum Pictures in London are planning to release due South on DVD in the first half of 2003 (not late 2002 as previously stated) and have started discussions with UK retailers on dating the release. They are watching with interest the Canadian release and hopefully will have a Region 2 disc as good as if not better than the region 1 disc!
maybe they'll do a more sensible (6 disk) set over here?

(September 24th 2002) A few Canadian stories today with, first of all, the delay of Due South - Season 1 DVD set. Originally slated with October 29th, the anticipated set has been delayed to an undetermined date. Stay tuned on that as I'll post the new date as soon as Alliance releases one.
This comes from http://www.canadiandvdgroup.com/ .

So maybe someone figured out that you cannot put 24 episodes on three DVDs.

26/11/02 according to paulgross.org
But it's still advertised as a 3-DVD set.
I was hoping the 'packaging issue' was that they found out they couldn't put eight episodes on one disc.
But the three DVDs could still be double-sided.
I won't preorder until I have an answer to this question - after all this is the same company that put half a season of pan-and-scanned C.S.I. episodes with the wrong title music on a very expensive boxset.
I love it so much I am prepared to risk it. I'd rather have whatever they release (assuming it reaches that stage) than nothing.
I've just read this extremely disappointing post on the Home Theater Forum:
---------------
I got my copy of Due South today. It is definitely the entire 22 episode first season. Discs 1 and 2 contain 4 episodes per side. Disc 3 contains 4 episodes on side 1 and 2 episodes on the 2nd side. The pilot 2 hour movie is not included. I don't know what it looks or sounds like because I went on-line right after retrieving my mail.
That's unbelievable!
What in Hades' name is the point of releasing the first season of a TV show if you don't include the feature-length pilot that establishes and explains the whole premise?!?
It's not even as if the pilot is available to buy separately!
What worries me is that this might set the formula for the UK, Region 2 release, due in the first half of next year.
Does anyone know what company is due to release the set in the UK? I plan on getting in touch and registering my concern.
First the US CSI in 4x3 and now this! Are the people at these companies incapable of doing their jobs properly?
:brickwall
Desk
I still have the hope that the person who posted on the Home Theater Forum is an idiot who just couldn't find the Pilot on the DVD. But I've checked every webpage, newsgroup and messageboard available and this was the only "review" of the boxset that I could find.
I have the set too, and the pilot is not included.
The first episode is Free Willie and the box boasts Over 17 Hours of Due South - all 22 episodes of the first season.
There are 2 DVD18 and 1 DVD 14 in the set ( the second side on the last disc only holds 2 episodes.
I just got off the phone with Momentum, who confirmed that plans are underway for a UK release of Due South's first season.
They appeared to take on board concerns about the absence of the pilot from the new Canadian release and said that as far as they were aware it would be included on the UK set.
However, they remarked that their rights were to all the standard episodes, and wondered if they would extend to the pilot - a feature-length production.
Nevertheless, they stressed that more details would not be known until the start of next year.
Here's hoping Momentum realises that releasing a series without the pilot that establishes it is utterly pointless.
Desk
Gutted. Set should arrive this week. I guess I'll end up buying both as I love the seris so much but I am stilled not best pleased :( I bought on the premis I would receive the whole first season
Davester, you have recieved the whole first season. The pilot was shown before the season was made in Canada and is not part of the season.
Still, logically you would expect it to be on.
I expect the reason for its absence is down to music rights. Due South always had fantastic music throughout its run which was carefully choosen to match the action or atmosphere of the visuals.
I expect the contract was different for the pilot episode. Hopefully the pilot will be released seperately if sales of the season set are good enough (I expect such a release strategy would bring in more income which could help clear the rights - if indeed this is the problem)
Help, I can't get the discs out of the holder! I'm afraid of breaking them - they are bending by a substantial amount when I try to remove them.
Any tips? Anyone?
in case anyone is wondering it is the same style of case as the 'crap' Blade II r2 case :(
This is really really sad. I won't buy this boxset and I'm sure that many people will do the same. And the people who buy this set thinking that it will hold the entire first season will be very disappointed and angry and will try to return the boxset.
That way the sales will be very bad and there won't be a second season boxset or a single release of the pilot.
This really is one of the biggest messes any company has ever made regarding the release of a TV show on DVD.
:oh-hum:
2099
I understand what you are saying and it is 'technically' correct, but not all that impressive!
This really is one of the biggest messes any company has ever made regarding the release of a TV show on DVD.
I don't think so. Not the missing pilot anyway. The missing pilot on the R1 Twin Peaks set didn't seem to affect sales... Artisan sold many, many more than they were expecting. At one point they couldn't keep up production.
Like the missing pilot on Twin Peaks - I'm sure that there are compelling legal reasons why the pilot is not included. Indeed according to Desk, Momentum are unsure as to the right for the pilot in the UK. There's nothing you or I can do about it.. we have to shrug our shoulders and wait for future developments. Would you rather have no Due South release?
Now, as to the box... yes I think that is one of the biggest messes any company has ever made regarding the release of a TV show on DVD! :)

Yes I would.
While it wasn't released I could at least hope for a decent version.
Now that the messed-up release is out I'll have to accept that there will never be a proper release on DVD.
There'll still be the R2 release but I was looking forward to a R1 release - I have many of the songs that are used in the show on CD and hearing them with PAL-speedup was always a little annoying.
I'm sorry, but I just can't understand that logic. You would rather have no DVD release of Due South at all - preffering to live in hope of a 'decent' version that would (in all probablility) never arrive?
There's nothing you an do. The R2 version is not absolute for including the pilot anyhow. And I'm sure if the reason for the missing pilot can be worked out it will be released as a seperate disc.
I'm sorry, but I cannot see the problem. Meanwhile I'll happily watch my 'over 17 hours' of Due South on DVD. (If I can get the bloody discs out of the case without breaking them).
So what is the quality like then ?!?!?
What makes it really annoying is that the pilot is out on *shudder* VHS, which makes its exclusion from the DVDs rather curious (to say the least).
I'm disappointed that the pilot isn't on there, but no doubt I'll stump up the extra $20 if (when?) it's eventually released.

Also, america wasnt sure how to take it, drama? comedy? It was hard for it to be placed in thier shedules. I`m Glad that the BBC part funded season 3, I liked how they parodied the way U.S shows replace actors, to play the same character in the first episode of season 3 too, shear class:)
2099net!! You can't leave us like this! What is it like?
I agree that it is better to have a dvd than not, I was just a little gutted that there was no pilot :( One of the best episodes IMO.
Davester I've not actually taken the discs out yet. I cannot stress how much the discs are bending when I try to get them out.
I've even put the case on the floor, pressing on the hub with my thumb with all my might and still the discs are bending alarmingly when I try to get them out. The fact that they are DVD-18 and DVD-14 worries me even more about this.
I dunno - I suppose I'm going to have to bite the bullet tonight. I've never had any problems with disc hubs before and always laughed at some of the complaints I see on this and other forums but now.... I understand completely!
This is without a doubt the worst case ever! (Again if anyone has any tips for me its the same as the so-called 'crap' R2 Blade II case)
The only suggestion I would have had is to press down firmly on the 'spindle' bit that the discs slide over - when I do this with my Blade2 discs, the hey pop up a little and can be easily slid up the spindle and out of the case.
But you've already tried this, so I'm at a bit of a loss - sorry mate :(
Could be a case of butchering teh packaging I guess. Hopefully I'll get mine from dvdboxoffice soon, so any advice if you suceed would be wonderful!
Good luck
Dave
I managed to remove the first disc from the case, and after hesitently putting it back I am pleased to report that it is easier to subsequently remove.
Right - I don't have anything approaching a state of the art home system, so any of my comments must be taken with a pinch of salt but here goes from my initial viewings:
As you would expect from an Allience Atlantis release, the cover is duel language, but not too bad. The cover is reversable but you don't really gain anything either side no matter what your language preference is as each side is duel-language. I've never understood the reason for reversable covers where the only difference is which language is most prominent. It just makes both language's cover look poor :)
The 22 episodes come on 3 duel sided discs. The first two are DVD-18 while the last is a DVD-14 as the second side only holds 2 episodes. The case is like the case some copies of the R2 Blade II shipped it which allowed for 4 discs two on each side overlapping, except there is only one hub on the left hand side which means the case holds 3 discs.
I was a little concerned about the overlapping discs on the right hand side, but close inspection shows there is no danger of the disc's surfaces meeting and rubbing together. In fact, if it wasn't for the face each disc is duel sided and that you need the patience of an angel to remove each disc I rather like the overlapping design... could work well with single sided discs.
On to the content of the discs:
firsly from what I can see after skipping through the first side of disc 1 NO EXTRAS, no animated menus either. The set is presented "no frills" (not that that is a bad thing to be honest - the menus on some sets totally get on my nerves sooner rather than later). Some people may be pleased to hear that there is a "play all" option unlike say the "X-Files" releases.
The sound is only available in English or French 2.0 and the picture while decent is certainly not the best I have seen for a TV release - it does not compare with the Artisan Twin Peaks discs or the remastered Dr Who discs for example. However, it is not bad and from the first 20 mins or so of the first episode plus random chaper skips on other episodes shows that the actual prints are in fairly good condition even though no restoration work seems to have been done.
All in all I would say the quality matches the R1 X-Files sets - and is a lot better than the first 2 seasons of the Buffy episodes. Most importantly the picture is much better than VHS.
And... well I suppose that's about it. There is a chance one or two of the episodes may have print damage etc. but I've only spent about 1/2 hour on the set.
I would say for the price you cannot go wrong.
Cheers chap! Fingers crossed mine arrives asap!
Disappointed the pilot isn't there, as I have never seen it =( Does anyone have a vhs vopy I can borrow for a week? (Dvdsoon shipped my dvds at the end of last week, so I expect I will get the set tomorrow or by the weekend - hope so anyway!)
Cheers 2099net. I was  yesterday at the ridiculousness of the packaging preventing us from hearing what the picture quality was like.
Good to hear it's a reasonable set, all in all, pilot or no. May pick this up.
And is it's 'dual' for two, 'duel' for a fight.
Thanks again.

This set is now seemingly unavailable anywhere - anyone know why?
tbibic this is a canadian only release. Try canadian only retailers. It's still available on Amazon.ca for example (but with a long lead time quoted).
True enough - but DV-Depot and DVD Soon (both Canadian retailers) have it as very much unavailable - which strikes me as strange.
Any word yet on a R2 release of Due south or shall I just bite the bullet. modify my Xbox and dance around naked when Due south arrives.
Suggestions wanted:nuts:

I've had it "On Order" from DVDSoon for the last week, has it been unavailable since this post?
If so, does anyone know anywhere else that has it in stock?
So either these DVDs are double-sided or this set could turn out a real mess.

:oh-hum:

I understand what you are saying and it is 'technically' correct, but not all that impressive!

Answers:
What makes it really annoying is that the pilot is out on *shudder* VHS, which makes its exclusion from the DVDs rather curious (to say the least).
I'm disappointed that the pilot isn't on there, but no doubt I'll stump up the extra $20 if (when?) it's eventually released.

Also, america wasnt sure how to take it, drama? comedy? It was hard for it to be placed in thier shedules. I`m Glad that the BBC part funded season 3, I liked how they parodied the way U.S shows replace actors, to play the same character in the first episode of season 3 too, shear class:)

Answers:
The only suggestion I would have had is to press down firmly on the 'spindle' bit that the discs slide over - when I do this with my Blade2 discs, the hey pop up a little and can be easily slid up the spindle and out of the case.
But you've already tried this, so I'm at a bit of a loss - sorry mate :(

Could be a case of butchering teh packaging I guess. Hopefully I'll get mine from dvdboxoffice soon, so any advice if you suceed would be wonderful!

Thanks again.

tbibic this is a canadian only release. Try canadian only retailers. It's still available on Amazon.ca for example (but with a long lead time quoted).

True enough - but DV-Depot and DVD Soon (both Canadian retailers) have it as very much unavailable - which strikes me as strange.

I've had it "On Order" from DVDSoon for the last week, has it been unavailable since this post?
If so, does anyone know anywhere else that has it in stock?
