51st State aka Formula 51 - Samuel L. Jackson
Question:

First title is the one used in UK and comes out on DVD on 7th october in R2, while it will only come out in theaters in US at about the same time, if not a month later.
This is one of those rare cases when a movie is available on DVD in R2 before R1, and so I was wondering given 2 great actors, to those who may have seen it if it was released to theaters, if it's any good, what it's really about, etc?

Answers:

its totaly *****, one of the worst films i have ever seen. im not sure i can either be bothered to give the whole story line, its just not worth it!

Answers:

Well it's not one of the worst films i've ever seen but it's far from the best either.
Starts off well enough but after 20 minutes quickly falls apart and the end is just so stupid it's an insult to the stupid.

Answers:

Good, good, ok, glimpses of hope and the possibility of this being a movie I'll love have just skyrocketed. :D

Answers:

Well I enjoyed it, I had fun for the duration of the film and whilst it is not a great film it is far from being really bad.
Instantly forgettable though.

Agreed.. Absolute garbage.

Really disappointing to get 2+ great actors from both sides of the pond together, then squander it all on some crappy low rent gangster tale.

Emily Mortimer is lovely

Is she related to Bob Mortimer?

Lenny, you and I pretty much like the same stuff, and my friends who have seen it said it was pretty good, and they also like the kind of films that we like, so I'd say it was worth a shot (I haven't sen it myself though).

First I didn't get a R2 DVD, then I didn't watch it in theaters, but I finaly got the R1 DVD, well a while ago but just seen it, and it's awesome! It was more exciting than any movie I've seen in theaters this year, and Emily Mortimer's hitwoman just kicks major ass, whenever I see a pretty woman in leather and a sniper rifle, I get all softy ...and hardy :D
It's a VERY GOOD FILM! It's very short, yet packs a lot of a punch, and was fun. Almost every scene has great music or score too!

Do you do it on purpose Lenny? I can't believe anyone really has that bad taste, you're just taking the **** right?

Answers:

Why do you think so? Is that because of the comment "more exciting than anything I've seen in theaters this year."?
That's because it is true. Most of the movies you've seen this year in UK are those awesome big budget and oscar hopefuls saved for the end of last year. All I've seen was stuff like The Hunted, Cradle 2 the Grave, Tears of the Sun, Dreamcatcher and The Core. Well, Dark Blue is better than Formula 51 but I really don't want to compare them.
And again, it is the elements of a movie that make me like it. That hitwoman, that 4 second shot of her exhaled cigarette smoke on the stairs in a montage, the movie is very stylish, fun, and snapping, everything just zips by and is over before you can breathe, and full of interesting characters and standout scenes. No, I don't do it on purpose. I just started to like movies no one else does, very early on, I remember my first US theatrical experience in 1996, The Island of Dr. Moreau. After that I was hopeless... :D

This film is just plain ridiculous. Robert Carlisle going out with a scouse hit-woman?? SLJ in a kilt??
No.
It's just plain daft. Why did they have 2 different titles as well!!??
Perhaps living in L.A. has got to you Lenny. Do you sit in the theatre whooping along with everyone else at all the action scenes? :D

Answers:

Lenny your spot-on the film is great ... its well recieved here, hillarious film!

Maybe because people in US will think it's about Alaska or Hawaii or whatever the 51st state is... Formula 51 is a better, clearer title.

there are 50 US states Lenny, that's why they called it the 51st state, saying England is an extension of the US.

I guess that that would have confused most Americans, unaccustomed as they are to imagining that anywhere outside the US exists, unless they’re bombing it of course. :brickwall

Yeah I remember that line from a movie, but I'm just saying that most would think that 51st state is Hawaii or something else, not that I think so.

President: What's that land over there?
General: Sir, I advise we bomb first, ask questions later!
President: Well, alright, it's just England probably. I'll go have a cup of tea.

They are that dumb, Jay Leno often goes out on the street and asks simple math, geography, and logic questions and makes a montage that shows just how stupid American people are. There was something about the states once too. :brickwall

I watched The 51st State last night on DVD and it's enjoyable in a kind of 'Guy Ritchie meets Tarantino' way. I wasn't expecting a masterpiece, but did find myself laughing out loud at many of the jokes! It's the sheer energy of the film that makes it worthwhile. The commentary from Northampton's Stel Pavlou is irritating, though. The guy is so smug you want to smack him!

Answers:

I thought it was a good film. The sound was superb & very loud!
