Ah, the age old trick of comparing R2 RRP's with R1 online shop prices, hardly a valid comparison;). Your argument would have more weight if you said pay £60 now or weight 12 months and get it at 2/3 of the price. Or you could get the R4 at the same time for just over £50. Then sell it in 12 months for £50+ on ebay and buy the R1;).

IMO it was absolutely the most depressing and probably worst season with 2 exceptions.
The episode where Spike spys on Buffy outside her house and she catches him, and the ep where he tells her about the slayers he's killed in the past.
I'd very much like those 2 episodes, but the rest is just too depressing so I'll probably wait for the R1.

Then you probably haven't seen season six yet - that was the most depressing and worst season of any show ever shown on television.
I've never seen a good show die like that. :oh-hum:

I’m comparing list price - $60/£40 R1 versus £80/$120 R2. It’s "wait" not "weight" (2nd time round) BTW.
I (like most others) don’t object to a couple of quid difference but double SRP for less content is a bridge too far. I like the R2 packaging but apart from the release date it‘s the only advantage over R1 and both of these are not enough of a reason to pay such a high premium.
Keep paying those inflated prices and they’ll have no incentive to lower them. Parallel import and teach those money-grubbing swine at FoxUK a lesson.

And many of use got season 2 of Buffy quite cheap when everywhere mispriced it before they realised it wasn't going to be split in half like the video boxsets have always been:p.

No, you’re ignoring the facts. RRP of the Buffy sets in the UK is double what it is in the States - whatever discount you managed to finegle in any once off deal is academic. We‘re talking about the same company selling lesser quality goods at twice the price.
Who in their right mind would even entertain buying the R2/4 if not for the 1 year head start?

Nana - some of us are watching Buffy for the first time on DVD, so can people please use spoiler tags where applicable?

I can't believe there isn't a commentary for The Gift, the most pivotal and emotional episode of the season(excluding the Body)
If the R1 ends up with a commentary on that episode i'm gonna go absolutely skitzo!!!!!!!

SPOILER(minor season overview)
Give season six a miss, season 5 I guess is still tempting to a hard core Buffy fan, it's alright, certainly enjoyed it, and didn't put me off the depressing season six season, but I doubt I would watch season 5 episodes as much as the first 3 seasons, season six gave me a bad taste for the show, that season, Joss Whedon admitted season six depressed him also, but good news for season seven, getting back on track with fun and entertaining us. But to Buffy's credit as a show, each year has been different, just season six is best viewed once, on tv, don't want to rewatch those depressing episodes too much in life hey?
Season six though I predict will still be brought, for Buffy completists, just ashame, it creatively worked against our enjoyment.
Season 7 should get things rolling again, more fun, less whining about life and death as season six.

But do think that you'll be able to enjoy the show ever again ?
Season six really has ruined the entire show for me.
I don't want to spoil anything (although there isn't much to spoil anyway because nothing actually happens for the most part of the season) - but can the show really recover from the complete desaster that season six has been ?
Everybody has been acting so out of character and the scripts looked like they were stolen from the set of some soap opera.
Sarah Michelle Gellar now needs two body doubles and four stuntwomen just to pick her nose.
Action was nonexistant (unless you count that disgusting scene in the house that falls apart) and there was absolutely no humor.
And SMG has this "damn, I wish my contract had already run out and I could start shooting Scooby Doo 2 and more Maybeline commercials " look on her face.
What's even remotely watchable about that show anymore ?
:oh-hum:

Season 6, like season 4 had some great stand out episodes: The first two parter, the musical, the last 3 episodes (well maybe the second and third last ones) and the wedding
And like season 4, I belive that season 6 will get better with time, although sadly that episode where Riley returns is absolutely god awful
Anyway, season 5 for me is easily joined favourite with season 2, especially nearer the end of the arch, and it generally works quite well as a whole season. I can't wait for this to come out on DVD cos I hate having to fast forward my GASP VHS tapes to the last episode on them for Tough Love which is one of my favourite episodes

http://www.watchers.web.com/ have posted that they've received a promo copy of S5 and it seems that the gag reels of the first 5 series that've been turning up at the BBFC are to be included :D

thing about buffy that i love is that the show has really evolved and grown.
just look at season 1 and compare it to where we have ended up in season 6.
season 6 is rather depressing at times but life is depressing at times. and yes buffy is certainly at its best when its lighter but season 6 is about:
a rebirth in the show, buffy has been dragged kicking and screaming back from the dead, i think it would have been awful to suddenly just start as you had left off. it would have been a cop out and i feel you appreciate buffy's sacrifice at the end of season 5 a hell of a lot more because of season 6. admittedly i probably won't be playing the season as many times as season 2 (which as far as i am concerned was possibly the best season of any show ever) but it was a good season.
i expect things to get a hell of a lot lighter now with this season and i expect that this may be the last season of buffy despite a few recent rumours stating otherwise.
lets hope buffy goes out with a bang and is still the best show on tv

Answers:

Season 5 wasn't especially good as the season plot arch pretty much over ruled individual episodes.
Season 2 (IMO the best season), had individual stories whilst maintaining the overall arch. It was no less emotional then season 5/6. S2 id on bbc 2 at the moment and last week's episode was the one where Angel killed Jenny and that was perhaps one of the best episodes ever and the script was still fresh and witty.
