Monsters Inc. - R2 before R1?
Question:

Is this right? - I've seen R2 retailers quoting 7th Sept, and R1 saying 17th.

Answers:

Correct. Disc Emporium are shipping the R1 this week mind (at a premium of course).

Yep. R2 has DTS and DD. R1 has DD EX (?) but full frame and widescreen. Debate is ongoing as to whether the R1 or R2 will have a better bitrate!! Who knows.
I've gone for the R1 to avoid the digipack (hopefully). Also I've gone for the US one as the Canadian looks like it could have the most horrible bilingual cover yet.

Answers:

With R2, DTS is confirmed. R2 Project showed some screen captures of the audio selection menu in Monsters Inc., and it clearly shows a choice between DTS and Dolby Digital.
With regard to bit rate, is it not likely that with the R2 release, the "re-framed" 4x3 version will be removed?

That's what I was trying to say. I believe the choice is:-
R1 DD EX Full Screen / Wide Screen v R2 DD DTS Widescreen.

R2 for me.

R1 for me. I have a 4:3 tv so will watch in the Full Screen version (Pixar do these very well). R1 is cheaper too.

In a movie that's only in an aspect ratio of 1.85:1, I see little to no point in a reframed 4x3 version. There is perhaps justification of this for A Bug's Life (which was 2.35:1), but even so it's still mutilation. I don't care if the director himself supervised it (I think he did), I still consider it beyond the pale to to go in and physically rearrange the layout of the artwork. I consider it to be almost as bad as "true" pan & scam.

Answers:

Didn't realise it was 1.85:1 (haven't seen it yet) - you're right, not worth it on that. Oh well, still region 1 for me due to cheapness (i don't have DTS anymore so not an incentive for me)

The Canadian version of Monsters Inc has a seperate French and English sleeve as do all Disney/Pixar releases in Canada... i've read.

pre-ordered R1 version from dvdsoon.
Heard quite a few bad reports about them, but £11 including the shipping is too good to resist.

Answers:

The specs on DVDsoon indicate it carrys a 4:3 and a 2.35:1 transfer.
I thought MI was 1.85:1?
Just chequed IMDB, it is 1.85:1, so dvdsoon are wrong

The region 1 disc is in an Amray case but a single one unlike previous Disney collector editions.

On the dvdsoon website search for Monsters Inc and you will get the normal version and the french version (v.f). Just choose the normal one.
