Question:
have no idea whether to buy the new DVD coming out in the US.
is this a good horror movie or just infamous for its brutality ?
does anyone know where to get a good review of this ?
or post your comments.
I saw it along, long time ago and have to admit, found it tedious,
the film had been built on on so much infamy that you too might be disappointed.
Here (http://www.sexgoremutants.f9.co.uk/lasthouse.html) and here's (http://www.dvdmaniacs.net/Reviews/I-L/last_house.html) some positive reviews though:)
i thought it was absolute rubbish. dreadful acting, inappropriate and plain unfunny comic moments, not 'shocking' in the slightest i thought. I can't understand why it is seen as a 'nasty'. a lot of people rate it though.
I was going to try and get this on DVD, but I'm just going to borrow my mates copy on VHS, just to say that I've seen it!

Infamous for its brutality. It has somehow earned its place in horror film history, but I have never felt that place was justified. Hardcore lovers of horror films should see it at least once, but for me repeated viewings weren't necessary.
It would be a much better film, and fit more snugly into Craven's oeuvre of work if it had the plotline of the 2 bumbling cops removed. It's still a powerful film IMHO, and a damn sight better than that other rape-revenge flick, I spit on your grave.
The movie suck in imho. Bought is for a few $$$ only. Good I didn't spend too much money on it :rocker:
I love this film. David Hess should have been a star!
Must admit, the comic coppers were a bit naff though.
As i've said elsewhere on these forums, my disc turned up this morning, and judging by the first few chapters, the print is vastly superior to the Dutch release, plus it has a few extra seconds.
For 8-9 quid, what are you waiting for? :)
Brilliant, brilliant film.
"And the road leads to nowhere..."
:rocker:
Paul, a few weeks ago you said you were going to do another review. Have i missed it (i've been away for 2 weeks), or is it still in the pipeline?
I actually like the bumblings cops I think it makes it all the more jarring when we switch to what else is happening elsewhere.

Still in the pipeline...
Just watched this. I found the first half truly powerful and very shocking. The second half was a farce - it was like watching an episode of The A Team meets Starsky And Hutch, even the end credits were a farce, they sounded like it was a comedy!
I also watched it last night. What a bizzare little film. The woodland scenes while shocking (aided by the sound etc) were not as bad as I was expecting. The police officers looked as though they had been transported from a slapstick movie and the music..............what the f##k was that all about.
The final act seemed rushed to me, and while it was quite unnerving to see two 'normal' characters do such things it did turn into a bit of a farce.
Not disturbed by it..............I'll watch the outakes/deleted scenes/commentory tonight.
The music is very odd!!! A bizzare Zoot-Skiffle thing going on while the gang kidnap the girls. Still, the clearly improvised scenes with the girls in the woods are still powerful, although this is undermined somewhat by the mother's extremely unbelievable method of turning the tables. By no means a masterpiece, but certainly an interesting watch - especially if you don't know what's coming.
There's some interesting dialogue, too - Sadie - "I have to cross my legs every time I think about the grand canyon." Oh, and some of the attitudes are extremely dated - I have a sneaking suspicion that this film was made when "Sex crimes", as the film puts it, were still considered tittilating.
is the print still smeared in places like the dutch version? is there a review anywhere?
I finally saw this last night and I didn't think it was anything special! :( Stupid music that was totally out of place and crap acting!
The concept was quite disturbing tho - if it were me tho and
I'd been running from them, I'd have jumped into the river!
Who spotted the evil karate teacher from the Karate Kid films? ;)

No it isn't. The print is probably the best this film will ever look.

:oh-hum: What do you mean? The music wasn't totally out of place. The music suited the film perfectly. "Now You're All Alone" is a terrific soundtrack.
The acting is good by the villains - David A. Hess particularly. It's not that good with the two girls - Sandra Peabody is probably the best of the pair. But the parents acted terribly - you gotta love Richard Towers's shirt though in the cooking scene!

Mari really should have run the hell out of there and not talk Junior into letting her go.
If you want to see some other Hess movies (I know there will be some people out there who saw Hess and liked his performance), I'd recommend:
Hitch-Hike - This is a terrific Italian thriller. It's not as disturbing as LHOTL, but Hess is great all the same. I also thought Nero was great too. The Anchor Bay R1 disc is very good - an excellent anamorphic widescreen transfer. Shame about the (lack of) extras though.
House on the Edge of the Park - This film isn't as good as The Last House on the Left or Hitch-Hike, but it's still great fun. It's a lot more sexually violent than either of the two movies mentioned above - the UK DVD release by Vipco has 11 minutes and 42 seconds of cuts! This Italian picture by Ruggero Deodato has not much going for it other than the two lead bad guys.
The print of LHOTL is definitely better than the Dutch disc, and this is most likely, as uncut as we are ever likely to see it.
The UK release will now be Anchor Bay's, but unless they can get the film passed uncut, I won't be selling my R1.
LHOTL is a reasonably powerful film, but I think that Zarchi's I Spit on your Grave (Day of the Woman) is far, far superior to Craven's effort. Zarchi presents rape in unflinching detail and shows us the full horror of it, with no comic relief. ISOYG makes a powerful point and has better performances, nastier characters and a powerfully downbeat ending. No-one comes out a winner in this film and effectively shows the futility and pointlessness of violence/rape and it's consequences. A superb film, but not an easy one to sit through. It certainly made me very uncomfortable - which is definitely the intention!

Thanks for posting it. It's something to read for a laugh.
I can see at least one person on the Forums finding a bottle and breaking it. (Reference to which film?) ;)
It's utter cobblers. The problem is, the murder scene is horrifically powerful, and it can't be justified by the rest of the film in any way whatsoever.
Cheap, nasty, exploitative rubbish - and after going through everything on the R1 disc, that's still my opinion.

yeah I agree, the soundtrack was the only thing I enjoyed ... IMO I spit on your Grave is a better movie ... if your just interested in the Rape/Violent scenes though you may prefer LHOTL.

I've been wanting to see that film for a while, but the only versions available on DVD are not uncut.
Ms.45 is a great film, i was lucky enough to buy one of the videos Warner Bros (i think) released accidentally uncut a few years ago. Unfortunately they recalled them once they realised their error.
Last House is quite poor actually.
I waited years to see this as could never get it on vhs. Now it is dated and have seen much worse. Still i suppose for curiosity worth a look.
Many of the older horrors slasher movies we watched in the 80s are best forgotten now. Not all but quite a few.

Speaking of this, the vastly superior Ingmar Bergman film it's based on, <b>The Virgin Spring</b> is out next month in R2.

I think the real point here is that LHOTL was powerful and shocking in its day.
Of course the passage of time and declining censorship restrictions makes it all look a bit dated and tame, in some ways. However, the scenes in the woods have lost little of their impact IMO.
I think it's a good film. But there are better examples of the rape/revenge exploitation sub-genre.
I agree that the plot was shocking, but for me, the silly comical music score just ruined it - I guess I had an idea in my head of what it was going to be like and was disappointed
