Films you believe are/will become cult films?
Question:

Which films do you like/love and believe that although they aren't right now, in the future will become cult classics ?
For me one film that comes to mind is the Korean film Whasango (Volcano High). I have come to really like this film and it has such a unique anime type style and creativity I like it more everytime I see it. It is definitely a film I believe would split people down the middle - some will love it and some will loathe it :) :)

I think Being John Malkovich will be regarded quite highly in years to come. One of the only films in recent memory where i couldn't quite believe what was coming off the screen. Great performances (especially Malkovich and Sheen together, albeit it briefly) saw it in the cinema and came out and ordered the R1 DVD straight away (as i aslo did with Three Kings).
It's one of three films i have that i've watched more than i was expecting too. (Three Kings and X-Men being the others). They all just have a great re-watchability factor.

Ghost World For Sure!

Have to agree with "Being John Malkovich" - very interesting film.
Also, how about "The Big Lebowski"? Although it's not everyone's cup of tea, it's a great film - in my opinion, of course!

Answers:

i think that Ghost World was made intentionally to be a cult film so therefore cannot be a cult film?

This movie is already considered a cult classic on these very forums
How about Memento...

Dog Soldiers......maybe.

I'm sure there are many smaller films i can think off, but right now, only two pop into my head..
I reckon A.I will be a film which garners more admiration in say 5-10 yrs.
and when people stop expecting the wrong thing when going into 'Magnolia', that too will become somewhat more appreciated, a few years down the line.
I think common perception of a film, and possibly the way it's marketed can have a huge effect on someone's appeciation of a film, it takes years until all that dies away and people are more able to take a film for what it is. :)

Thats' spooky, i came into this thread with the intention of posting about volcano high (only seen the trailer mind) but its been ordered and looks excellent and looks like it could be a cult classic.

Modern day cult classics, eh? From the 90s:
Buffalo 66
Bottle Rocket
Dazed and Confused
Ed Wood
Heavenly Creatures
Clerks (definitely the cultiest of Kevin Smith's films)
The Day of the Beast
Jacob's Ladder
Hard Boiled
Delicatessen

one's that will...
Legend of Zu (2001 version) - is definately heading in that direction (if not already)
Shaolin Soccer - (uncut version) already/will be one
My Sassy Girl - (original Korean version) a film that I've so far seen no detractors for (at all)
Spirited Away - Could be heading in the direction of Princess Mononoke if Disney are intending on screwing around with it, marketing wise. So the people that will see it in the west will rave, whilst the ones that haven't will not have the intentions to.
Battle Royale - because it has the hallmarks for being a cult favourite. Killing, guns, samurai sword, schoolgirls and a simple no brainer plot.
A pattern I'm sure you'll see (all asian :P).
As for Whasango/Volcano High being on the list, Resurrection of Little Match Girl could be the next Korean flick in that fashion. http://www.koreanfilm.org/htdocs/dcforum/DCForumID1/1008.html

Fight Club - An excellent reflection of modern society. Everytime I watch this, there is something new. It just has so much to say. Those that think it was just about fighting, missed the point. Much of it is very Zen like.
Unfortunatly, I think it came a bit too close to the mark for many people, as it basically said "This is the life you are leading; and it is *****."
Give it ten years, it will be looked on very differently. It will either raise to a great height, or disappear down a black hole, as people try to bury it. Either way though, the reaction to the movie shows as much about society as the film itself.

2 films that I find entertaining but really can't understand where people manage to find hidden depths are The Matrix and Fight Club.
As far as cult goes, movies that haven't been mentioned here include:
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Gummo
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
200 Cigarettes

Shoalin Soccer - masterpiece

Fight Club has lots of hidden deapths that I won't go into unless you are interested.
Matrix has almost as many. I have studied Zen Buddhism for a long while now, and there are a hell of a lot of similarites with the Matrix. The main one being as to how we as individuals and as a whole percieve reality.

Answers:

1. Due you mean cult in the Daniel Perry sense? (Author of 3 books on cult films)
2. Or that the film will be continually programmed at rep cinemas?
3. Or that is will remain outside of the mainstream?
Some of the films already mentioned in this thread were cult classics before they were even released. Most indie films can be considered cult due to point 3. All of the Coen brothers work for example. Memento and Being John Malkovich are obvious examples of films that were designed 100% to be quirky and different. Therefore cult.
Surely a cult film is - a film that achieves long term popularity and reputation far in excess of that it achieved upon original release.
This definition would discount Being John Malkovich and Memento because they were hailed as master pieces on original release.
Something like 'Blade Runner' is a peerless example of the definition of a cult film. It flopped on original releae, all of the critics hated the film with a passion, it nearly destroyed the director's career.
Now, it is universally hailed as a masterpiece ahead of it's time, but yet it still divides people 50/50 over it's merits. It has generated a number of myths about its production and scores of films have imitated it's looks.
Like the debut album by the Velvet Underground, it was said that only 50 poeple bought copies, but each one of them was inspired to start a band. With Blade Runner, no-one went to see it at the cinema, but every production designer in hollywood ripped-off it's looks.
That is the definition of a cult film for me.
Thinking of all the films I have seen in the last couple of years the only one that spings to mind as having the potential to be a cult movie and fulfils some of the criteria above would be - Final Fantasy:Spirits Within.
It was a flop. The critics hated it. It was the first computer animated film that strived for realism. It was inspired by a computer game, but not in the normal way. The ideas in the film are from a japanese cultural heritage, but have been filtered for the US audience. In years to come I can well imagine that this film will be thought of as being ahead of it's time. Maybe the lead character was a replicant after all!

Agreed on Final Fantasy...

well me thinks the LOTR trilogy is going to go the way of the original Star Wars trilogy.

The definition of a cult film, in my opinion, is a non-mainstream movie that is held in very high regard by certain circles of film fans but remains obscure or disliked by most others, such as Dark Star, The Beyond, Repo Man, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, Witchfinder General, Lisztomania!, etc.
A cult classic is something quite different - those are generally decent-enough films that have engrained themselves into modern pop culture for whatever reason, ie. The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Pink Flamingos, Barbarella, Akira, Shaft, The Wicker Man and others.

Answers:

Hard 8 I would say has the makings of being a cult film

Fight Club - it tanked at the box office but it's one of those films which will appreciated more and more over the coming years.
Those of us who 'got it' right away can then feel smug.

Pitch Black

Answers:

Olivier Assayas' "L'eau Froid" should be a cult movie - the best study of teenage life I've ever seen on film - but hardly anyone seems to have seen it. The central party sequence alone makes it a strong qualifier.
Other possibles:
Spike Lee's "Bamboozled", which I thought was exceptionally good and very daring
Neil Jordan's "The Butcher Boy", another film which slipped through the net but which seems to be getting more acclaim as time goes by.
Antonia Bird's "Ravenous", a deliciously funny, nasty black comedy which has a dementedly jolly tone.
Richard Linklater's "Waking Life", one of the best films I've seen this year and a total original.

I have a feeling a lot of the horror stuff coming out of Japan has already become cult classics, I do of course refer to Evil Dead Trap, Wild Zero, Bio Zombie, Audition etc. Also worth a mention is that there are a lot of good movies starting to come out of Korea, we can but wait and see.

This turned up this morning from DVDSoon.
Bought it totally blind (as I seen a post on the BF saying it was available cheaply).
Totally took me by suprise, never really seen anything like it.
At the price DVDSoon are flogging it at it's a bargain of obscene proportions, and worth a punt to anybody.

Donnie Darko has a good chance, to be honest as long as something has a following it can become a cult movie, so it is really hard to tell what will be cult, especially with the internet being able to find films that cater to your every taste and the future of digital video looking bright ( any Joe Blow could make a huge hit film, like in the drive in days).
I guess time has to tell.

another vote for Donnie Darko and Final Fantasy.
I'd add Ravenous to the list too. Excellent film, which was virtually overlooked on its release.
Mind you, you can never tell which films will achieve Cult status. There are some older films that I'm suprised haven't done so - for example, Sam Raimi's Crimewave and John Landis' Into the Night. Not very well known, but top movies.

Answers:

I think Crimewave is already a cult film, judging by the amount of money the old VHS used to change hands for. Great film.

He Died With A Felafel In His Hand (did it even GET an international release?).
Great teen party movie (isn't that how most cult films get their status? By having a bunch of uni students watching them obsessively at parties then writing treatises about their cultiral significance?)

"Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" has the potential to become a cult film - I loved it but its not for everyone's taste. Also Todd Haynes's brilliant "Far From Heaven", which is probably already a cult movie.
