Question:
I really love the old cartoons like felix the cat from the 1920's. are there any dvd's out there featuring similar material? I have 'presenting felix the cat' which is fantastic. Are there any quality cartoons available on dvd?
You could try the Walt Disney Treasures series, out in limited edition tins, each with two disks; I got the first two, Silly Symphonies and Mickey Mouse in Living Color (sic) from DVD Box Office for £15 each. Don't know if they are still available, but you could always try eBay - there were plenty on offer last time I looked. This December they are expected to release the next three in the series, including B&W Mickey Mouse and Goofie material.
Other stuff worth considering is the Cartoon Classics series on R4, available for about a fiver per disk, of early Warners stuff. Picture and sound quality is only so so, however. There were twelve disks in this series.
Hope this helps.
if you like Disney then you might like to try and get hold of a few of their 'Treasures' tin sets which contain lots of their earlier cartoons - last year they released Mickey Mouse in Living Color and Silly Symphonies (both OOP now tho) and in November this year they will be releasing Mickey in Black & White and The Complete Goofy collections
many thanks, i'll definitely check out early disney, so much more innovation than the stuff they churn out now. I did find this on amazon which sounds exactly what i'm looking for and i've ordered vol1:
dvd (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/6305472408/qid=1030441506/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_2/002-5215171-4468040?v=glance&s=dvd&n=507846)
In the Cartoons That Time Forgot there is also the Van Beuren collection. Then there is the two Uncensored Bosko-discs. And of course classic Popeye shorts are available on various dvd's.
BTW, the Mickey Mouse tin is still available here:

(I believe there is a CAD5-coupon available to lower the price)
Silly Symphonies is out of stock/OOP, though.
Tom & Jerry's Greatest Chases.
I recommend the Cartoons That Time Forgot series which comprises the cartoons of Ub Iwerks (over two volumes) and the work of the Van Beuren Studio (one disc) - these three DVDs contain a total of almost 10 hours of classic cartoons.
regards, Tim...
lots of lovely classics to enjoy, thanks for the links.
