Films Cinema Run is 'just a preview for the DVD Release.
Question:

According to an article in the New York Times films are increasingly making more money when released on DVD than during their theatrical release.
"Some recent hit films, like The Fast and the Furious and Training Day, have earned more money from their DVD releases than from their first-run theater engagements. And for the first time, DVD sales have surpassed those of videocassettes, even though DVD players are in only about a third of American households, compared with a saturation of more than 90 percent for videocassette players."
And here's another even more interesting quote from Martin Greenwald, the president of Image Entertainment: "The initial release of the motion picture in movie theaters is becoming, to a large extent, little more than a preview trailer for the subsequent purchase of the DVD."

Most theatrical releases lose money, and independent theatrical releases are virtually guaranteed to lose money - the only real economic justification for them is that they invariably get much more publicity than straight-to-video/DVD releases (both through paid-for marketing and media coverage), which means that the DVD and video release is seen as more of an "event", thus (hopefully) guaranteeing more sales.

So when are we going to see the first DVD-only release ?
I wonder what would happen if they released for example 'The Matrix Reloaded' only on DVD and not in the cinemas.
I think they would probably make a lot more money that way.
It will never happen of course - many cinemas in the US are owned by the movie companies and make most of their money by selling popcorn and beverages.

A theatrical release gives a film some added kudos so is essential in ensuring successful DVD and video sales.
