Question:
After seeing the smashing Resident Evil *avoids rotten tomatoes* and realising the director is the main man for directing horror I want to purchase Event Horizon. Watched this on video ages ago and thought it was suitably scary, which leads me to my question.......
Any plans to do a special edition DVD of this? With a load of special features?
There's supposed to be a much longer version, some say it's a lot gorier, others say not, just loads of stuff chopped from the version released. There's nothing planned on DVD however, which sucks as I'd like to see it!
I have the R2 Event Horizon (I believe the R1 is non anamorphic)
From last week's interview with Paul Anderson:
ARROW: Do you have any insight about the Special Edition "Event Horizon" DVD?
PAUL: Well, I’ve always been disappointed in the past about the number of extras that were on the DVDs of my movies. I mean, Event Horizon is a case in point, it’s a real shame that all that’s available is not on the DVD. I keep talking to Paramount with the idea of doing a Special Edition for that.
ARROW: So it’s NOT official yet that there’s going to be a SPECIAL EDITION of Event Horizon coming out soon on DVD?
PAUL: No. They approached me to do a Director’s Commentary on it but I was in the middle of shooting Resident Evil so I was unavailable for it. At that point they said: we’re just gonna wait and talk about doing a Special Edition later down the road. Now that I’m back in LA full time, I’m gonna get in contact with them again and see what we can do. But it's not official and I think if it's gonna happen...it’s a long way off.
ARROW: A lot of Event Horizon fans are really hoping that it happens. I know that for a fact.
PAUL: I hope so too, there’s a lot of great stuff that we cut out of the movie that I would like to see back in and there’s also a lot of cool behind the scenes stuff, like an HBO special on it which I think would be great to stick on the DVD, I don’t understand why they haven’t done it.
ARROW: Maybe it's a copyright issue or something like that...
PAUL: Maybe, I also think that when Event Horizon was done, DVD was sort of in its infancy, so I didn’t pay a lot of attention to it. I didn’t understand what the possibilities of DVD were yet. Now I very much do, so I paid lots of attention to it while we were shooting Resident Evil and when we were in post-prod, I wanted a DVD that was fully loaded. I personally buy a lot of DVDs and I’m always disappointed when the extra features are "you can watch it with French subtitles or watch the trailer"
ARROW: You’re telling me!
PAUL: I think WOW you know...they’re really giving me my money's worth here!
You missed out the part where he says what got cut out as well, scenes such as someone getting a spike through the backside and out of the mouth.
Nasty.
Event Horizon really polarises opinion amongst horror fans, I've found. Personally I thought it was tedious and unexciting, as did the guy I went to see it with. My best mate thought it was fantastic though, and is eagerly awaiting a special uncut release.
I quite like the odd bit of grue and gore, but I just hope if it ever does get released that it improves the pacing of the movie overall!
Im not a fan of the horror genre at all, its cliched and repetitive in general - Event Horizon is probably the best I've seen, but even then surely its a thriller, not a horror?
I thought it was laughable, not scary. They're not getting my money anyway.
Q: When is a Director’s Cut not a Director’s Cut?
A: When the Director delivered his preferred version the first time round and is now going back to the same well for obviou$ rea$on$.

N07 1n 7h1$ c4$3.
Paul Anderson didn't get his preferred version, but a version that satisfied an R rating, and as he says "learned a lot" from the process, therefore his Resident Evil is a director's cut, since he knew what would be ok with MPAA and satisfies him.

What he says now and what he said at the time are two different things. I’ve detailed elsewhere the fact that I and some his friends attended the final private screening of Event Horizon before the answer-print was sent to the States and Anderson stated to all assembled that the print he was delivering was his cut. He was not forced to take the scissors to it although, if anything, at that time he said he wished it were even shorter.
These facts are incontrovertible to me because I was there. The fact that he’s now decided he’d like to extend it has nothing to do with his first version being taken out of his hands but IMO more to do with selling people product twice over.
or maybe hes just changed his mind over the course of time and wants people to experience a new version he has planned because in his opinion, its better than what was before because hes learnt things.
Event Horizon is not Star Wars or anything like that, has a very limited fan base, and if he's gona make another version it's not for money, but for his fans. He's a fanboy himself who made it and going from "normal" to getting a few million dollars, it's enough for the rest of his life, if he invests them for a percentage, and he better spend his time making new movies for more money than bothering recutting an older one for a 100th of that, so if he is interested, it's not cause of money.

I’m not having a go at you Lenny but you seem to believe every word of that recent interview with PA. My problem with revisionism and this fairly poor movie in particular is that the one in theaters was a Director‘s cut, a cut he totally believed in and endorsed at the time so going back and extending it seems like an artistically bankrupt thing to do.
There’s only one reason to revisit this movie and it’s dollars - plain and simple.
