Question:
how can i gauge this
is it worse than the remake of 'The Haunting'?
No, it's the best of 3, the other being Thir13en Ghosts, I actually really like it because of wonderfuly cunning performances by Famke Janssen and especially Jeffrey Rush.
It's very dark and bloody and all around good except for the ending where you have to suffer through some uncessary and bad CGI, but where can you escape that nowadays, so I'd very recommend you get it.
I thought it was quite good. The original is pretty crap by todays standards. A skeleton dangling from a piece of string isnt exactly scary.
Nope, not bad at all IMO. The rivalrous chemistry between Famke Janssen and Geoffrey Rush is excellent, and makes for some great one-liners. Good production design, smart script and genuinely quite surprising in places.
It's far, far better than either 13 Ghosts or The Haunting remakes.
I thought it was better then the Haunting but not as good as 13 Ghosts ... watchable though, Ive seen far worse recent Horrors!
Haven't personally seen The Haunting or 13 Ghosts remakes......
But FWIW I quite enjoyed the newer House On Haunted Hill. Couple of good shock moments, though some seriously pants CGI in places.
Enjoyable enough way to spend an hour and a half, though don't expect anything too taxing :)
Have fun.
Agreed on everything said before. Top notch performances from Jeffrey Rush and Famke Janssen and some rather scary bits too, but then i still find Doctor Who rather frightening ;)
I had the displeasure of watching this rubbish at the cinema and to be quite honest I would have happily walked out after 50 minutes if I wasnt with my friends. It was possibly one of the worst films I have seen in my 25 years of living, and a complete waste of 90 minutes of my life. Complete and utter rubbish.
I enjoyed it, largely because Geoffrey Rush's impersonation of Vincent Price's mannerisms is spot-on and the director manages a few nice visual coups to offset some awful CGI. Certainly better than the dire <b>Thirteen Ghosts</b> and the piece of excrement known as the remake of <b>The Haunting</b>.
Worth watching for the theme park bit at the start. Bit poor after that but not as bad as psycho remake
Starts off O.K but quicky turns into a load of CGI crapness.
One of my favourite bits in it was when
I think the woman who was in Mortal Kombat is looking in a room and it's empty then she looks through her camera and she see's ghosts of doctors. Eventually they spot her and come and get her:). I guess really it was the ending with the big black blob that spoilt the film up until then I really did enjoy it and it's way better than 13ghosts and the haunting.
After thinking about it I'm probably going to buy it now:brickwall
Whoever's interested, I'm selling the R1 version in the classifieds. ;)
I'm surprised no ones mentioned the excellent 5.1 mix on the DVD. I had the misfortune to watch 13 ghosts recently and HOHH is much much better.
I loved it (HOHH that is)
I really enjoyed House on Haunted Hill and it's definatley leagues better than Thirteen Ghosts or The Haunting remakes.
13 ghosts sucked schlong
I actually liked The Haunting......if I had a big castley type mansion hoose like that, I'd have that kind of decor in it!
I also liked The House on Haunted Hill
God, I'm such a girlie!
I was really surprised by how much I liked this movie after all the bad reviews it got from critics and hating the boring remake of The Haunting.
Apart from the lame CGI monster near the end the movie was great and very creepy in places. Be sure to hang around while watching the movie until after the credits because there is an extra scene there which is pretty disturbing.
Hey welcome Slender, another newbie bites the dust (will not leave now, bwahahahaaha)

its not a scene for a sequel is it? ;)
No actually it's a quite cool scene which is related to the black and white opening of the movie. It's only about ten seconds or so. I was a bit disppointed by the ending of the movie but this small scene made up for it in my opinion.
I love the movie, nothing bad about it. Great remake imo :)
