Baise-Moi! Who likes it? And Why?
Question:

In a shameless bout of plugging for my Baise-Moi review (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=1020&story=3542) I have decided to let this thread be a chance for all the fans of the film to explain why they like it so much.
Well!!! ;)

I knew you'd post here! :)
Ironically the two films are so opposite and yet quite similar. Actually no, one is infinitely better than the other!!

As bizarre as my taste in films is, I have never actually known anyone to like Baise-Moi, so what about changing your question to who would own/buy it and why? :D

Sorry I thought 'baise' meant that swear word rhyming with 'duck'
Obviously, being a mere peasant, my language skills leave a lot to be desired.

If I want to see penetration and BJ's Id spend my cash on a decent porno - at least I'd have a chance of seeing some fit birds that way, rather than those 2 iffy hermaphrodites :smokin:

Fifteen years ago, I'd undoubtedly have been first in the queue, but fifteen years of "was that it?/what was all the fuss about?" disappointment has made me far more selective - and I've yet to see anyone whose opinion I truly respect championing Baise-Moi!

Thats cos its **** mate.
The only shocking thing about this tripe would be the sub Evil Dead style special effects, coupled with the complete absence of plot or characterisation.
It doesn't even work as an exercise in titilation.
Utter garbage.

Cant believe I agree with eveybody for a change, what a load of tripe.

Incidentally, talking of highly controversial rape-based French films, Irreversible is up before the BBFC next week - and Tartan boss Hamish McAlpine has hinted that he may consider shelving it if cuts are requested (they'd be totally impractical - the film's shot in a series of extended Rope-style takes, making cuts obvious, and by all accounts this is the kind of film where it's not just a question of a few snips here and there: they're not going to make any difference!
Unlike Baise-Moi, I'm definitely going to see Irreversible - I've yet to see anyone claiming that the two women who made Baise-Moi have any real talent for anything other than superficial shock effects, but Gaspar Noé is a genuine if deeply uncomfortable original. But I'm going to be very careful about who I see it with - not entirely coincidentally, the last film I saw in a cinema on my own was Noé's earlier Seul contre tous!

I always admire a director willing to kill a project rather than have it butchered by censors or distributors - perhaps a sign that this movie may have more about it than the exploitation-flick-without-merit Baise Moi.
Though rumours of a 9-minute anal rape and critics walking out of its premiere in protest, will be giving the blurb-writers of the dvd-cover-art wet dreams already.

Or it could just be a cunning game of bluff!
(I suspect it probably isn't, though - Noé's talent was obvious in Carne, La Bouche de Jean-Pierre and Seul contre tous, and the film's had far more heavyweight champions than Baise-moi ever did)
What will be very revealing will be if the French DVD has English subtitles - I was surprised that Seul contre tous didn't, given that Noé had already slammed Britain's "medieval" censorship (the film wasn't cut, but a hardcore scene was optically blurred).

Did anyone see the uncut version of Baise Moi? or are you all going on the cut version?

Uncut - even more crap that the cut version. Based on the principles of more=worse.

My two cents: A hoard of porn filmmakers huddle together and hatch a guaranteed money spinning pile of toss...
And hell - IT WORKED... even if there are better plots & charachter development in 80% of all hardcore flics...
Not that I'd know ;)

I found it worth watching once in 'extreme cinema' terms, but it's certainly neither a good nor an entertaining film. On the other hand, it's probably better to have even bad filmmakers challenging the boundaries once in a while and every so often we get a genuinely important film. Hasn't happened here sadly.

By all accounts the difference is negligible - there was just one small cut (close-up penetration) lasting a few seconds.
So this isn't quite the same territory as the initial US release of Man Bites Dog, which despite being touted as "unrated" cut out two of the most critically important scenes -
the child killing and gang rape, which are vital to the point that the film's making, as they represent the point where the camera crew move from being mere observers to becoming actual participants in Ben's crimes
I first found out about this when I was discussing the film via e-mail with an American girlfriend and she expressed complete bafflement as to what I was talking about, and I was equally baffled that a highly intelligent woman like her seemingly hadn't grasped a pretty obvious point. So I was quite relieved when I found out - but somewhat surprised when I discovered just how severe the cuts were!

Is the new Criterion edit uncut ?

Answers:

Incidentally, read the review of the Australian DVD release (cut for a R18+ rating) of Man Bites Dog on Michael D's website...the words of someone who has clearly missed the point of the film. Though due to the cuts, perhaps the reviewer should be given the benefit of the doubt.

Yes, definitely - and the full version has been available on video in the US for some time: it's just that people are understandably confused when confronted with an MPAA-approved version (albeit at NC-17) that's uncut and an unrated version that's been butchered!
Man Bites Dog has never been cut in Britain - thankfully, the BBFC recognised that the film was making a fundamentally serious point and that cuts would dilute or destroy it.

Or they thought - just one man (and possibly his dog) would want to watch it, not recognising the potential for popularity it had.
Its far from graphic anyway in my opinion.

Well I guess I'm more or less alone then in liking Baise Moi. I like it's attitude and while it's no masterpiece I think it knocks the spots off of so many other 'killers hit the road' kind of movies with the possible exception of Richard Kern's 'Fingered'. I don't care if it is anti this or anti that and I don't really care what anybody else thinks of it either. But I do believe that it would be a good thing for the movies if more people had the conviction to at least attempt making truly brutal movies without such obvious pretentions to claiming it as a precious work of art. At the end of the day though it is what it is and I get something from it and that's all that matters to me.
