Question:
this is on tomorrow on Ch4.
worth watching ?
is it a good film or just a porn fest ?
either way, ill be happy :p
It's not a porn fest, and it ain't a very good film either... you might be disappointed.
i wouldn't imagine there would be much left after TV cuts. I last saw it years ago and it was terrible, although it was cut too - for video (what are those?) release. IMHO, its an ugly mess of a film, I give it a slight benefit of the doubt by telling myself they had to cut all the good bits out...
'might be worth it for the embarrassment value of the actors involved. :)
i think ill give it a miss then :)
The best thing about Caligula is Malcolm McDowell's anecdotes on the making of it. If they ever release it on DVD with a commentary by him it'd probably be worth buying. :)
All the hardcore scenes will be lost on television get the r1 version unrated for all the mucky bits which are edited in to this trashy favourite.Id say have a watch i liked parts of it but as a whole its too long,it trys to portray historical events which if true must have been as daft as they appear.check McDowell trying to sleep with his sister in the first few mins to the theme from the ONedin Line,Mcdowell havin a kip with his horse, lesbian scenes thrown in for the hell of it,the wedding scene i could go on its a riot. The documentery on the dvd had lots of interviews etc and deleted sex scenes that are muckier than in the movie, one actress claims to have loved filming the movie while clips of her performing various acts on a gent carry on. A laugh riot.
There are two ways of looking at Channel Four's version - either it's a horribly censored travesty or (and there's a strong argument in favour of this point of view) it's one hell of a lot closer to director Tinto Brass's original vision before he was fired and the film was hijacked by producer (and Penthouse founder) Bob Guccione, who spliced in tons of additional porno footage, some (though not much) of it hardcore, entirely regardless of whether it was relevant to the plot (for instance, an absurdly prolonged five-minute lesbian scene for no dramatic reason whatsoever).
The film's certainly worth seeing out of curiosity - there's actually quite a few hints that it might have been halfway decent if Gore Vidal's original script had been given to a different director and especially producer. The production design (by Fellini regulars) is often stunning, and Malcolm McDowell is unnervingly convincing in the title role - but the final version (regardless of whether you watch the uncut DVD or the Channel Four version) is a disjointed mess that falls between two stools: there's not enough porn for raincoat-wearers to justify watching two-and-a-half hours of Roman politics, and there's rather too much for people who are genuinely interested in the historical background!

This will be the directors approved cut, removing all the naughty bits ;)
They had a documentary on C4 when this was first shown on C4 a year or so ago, has also been on Film 4 a few times since then.
