Question:
Many many apologies if this has been asked before, I've tried searching to no avail.
We borrowed LOTR DVD this week (waiting for the extended version before buying) and my wife is absolutely convinced that there are some missing scenes when compared to what we saw at the cinema last year. That contradicts the details "This theatrical version is the original film shown in cinemas last December. "
Well, here's the scenes she reckons are missing:
Scene in Farmer Maggots cottage, giving the hobbits a meal & a basket of mushrooms (covered in a red checkered cloth). He then takes the hobbits so far in his cart.
Barliman Butterbur apologising profusely to the hobbits for his memory lapse 'one thing drives out another' etc
Firstborn Uruk Hai strangling his orcish midwife
Gandalf pondering the password at the entrance to the Mines of Moria for longer than was shown on the DVD, and the Fellowship getting impatient with him (she might be confusing this with the crossroads inside the Mines).
Thanks,
longlife

I don't remember the first two from the theatrical release but the third one was in the DVD that i watched.
No there definatley was no Farmer Maggot meal in the film i saw at the pictures.
The pirated VCD that was doing the rounds at Christmas actually featured some extra scenes that were cut out for the theatrical release. Being a good boy i've not seen the VCD so maybe this version has the missing bits in it.
i have the DivX.
tell where to check these scenes, roughly what times they should appear.

Not sure on the other points but I was certain of this too, it did seem to be shorter.
Your wife has probably confused her first cinema viewing of the film with the book. It's actually quite common to remember the film differently from your memory of it at the cinema -- there are often threads about "I remember a certain scene from the cinema viewing, why is it missing?" What really happens is you kinda forget the cinema viewing and you fill in the blanks with what you *assume* you saw.
In the book, the hobbits get invited to dine with Farmer Maggot and his wife, and he gives them a basket of food (including mushrooms). In the film this entire section of the plot was shortened drastically, and Farmer Maggot became just a reference and a brief shot of a scythe as he chased after Merry and Pippin.
Barliman Butterbur also had a very small role in the film. The dialogue your wife thinks she heard is dialogue from the book.
As for the huge Orc (the super-orcs cross-bred by Saruman aren't actually Uruk-Hai), I actually do think I remember a shot in the theatrical version where it kills a few regular Orcs as soon as it is born. But I'm probably mistaken. There is a shot in the film when the Orcs are painting their faces, and one shot looks kinda like a neck-snap, but it isn't.

Farmer Maggot does NOT appear in the movie.
Barliman Butterbur does NOT have a memory lapse as such, because Gandalf doesn't leave him any message in the movie (unlike the book).
The firstborn Uruk Hai does indeed strangle an orc as soon as he's born.
Gandalf ponders the password for the same length of time on the DVD as he did at the cinema.

Having seen the movie at the cinema 3 times (twice not long ago) and watched the DVD last week, I can confirm that Dannywonderful has got it right.

Famer Maggot does appear in the movie. He appears in the scene where a ringwraith screams baggins and shire and Maggot tells him they are up in Hobbiton.
Cameron Rhodes plays Farmer Maggot. Farmer Maggot is credited at the end in the credits if you have look more closely.
I know what Cameron Rhodes looks like as he played Prince John in Dark Knight, and is in that scene.

Yes, we listened to the original Radio 4 broadcast, that was a long time ago but obviously had an impact on her. I've listened this dramatisation since (some kind forum member sent me the mp3 files), but my wife hasn't.

Perhaps those scenes were in the Bakshi "animated" version?
Nope, they weren`t in the Bashki version. Not that I remember anyway, and I only watched it a couple of moths ago
