Question:
I went to HMV recently and was a bit overwhelmed by the amount of releases they had of "Night Of The Living Dead"!
Can someone tell me the definitive disk to own?
I nearly picked up the cheapest one (£5.99) but didn't want to get it back and find out it was er crap.
Any opinions?
I think the one to own is the Millenium Edition (http://www.dvdtimes.org.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=791&story=3098).
yup, deffo the Millenium Edition
The reason there are so many editions is that due to a copyright registration cock-up back in 1968 the film is in the public domain - which means that anyone can release their own version if they can get their hands on a print!
The Millennium edition is comfortably the most expensive, but it's by far the best - not only is it the only version that George A Romero approves of, it was also transferred straight from the original negative, giving a far sharper, clearer picture than any of the other versions (given the film's rock bottom budget, the picture quality is astonishingly good).
The other version that catches people's eye, because it's the only other package that's especially elaborate, is Anchor Bay's 30th Anniversary Edition - but this is an utter travesty that should be avoided like the plague. It includes two cuts of the film, one including entirely unnecessary additional scenes shot three decades later which don't match at all, and the other claiming to be the original version, but it replaces the original (and very effective) library music score with a tacky synthesised one.
Oh, yes, indeed, Elite's "Millennium" editon is most certainly the pick of the crop.

You would do well, I may add, to avoid many of the others at all costs (so to speak), old bean!
Please do not leech images, upload them to your own webspace.
don't forget the free one available from Bensonsworld!

Oh, I beg to differ. I would advise that one does indeed banish this atrocity from one's memory forthwith. "Free" it may be, but do bear in mind that nothing comes without a price.
And please spare a thought for the poor chaps who fashioned this chilling masterwork. The "Millennium" release is that approved by Mr Romero (who contributes a commentary), old bean.
The "free" version given away by Bensons World looks like the version with the "new" score (but no extra "new" scenes). Maybe it's the same print as used in the Anchor Bay disk - the video certainly looks very good (almost as good as the ME) - shame about the score though. :oh-hum:
The ME version doesn't have the little 'surprise' that the older Elite version has though.
The 'Millenium' version is by far the best release out there, no question.
What was the other version of it, was it only region 1? I remember the first article i read on AICN was by Harry Knowles trying to get people to boycott the disc if they were thinking of buying it because it was colorised and new scenes were added if i remember.
It was pretty funny too.
And now to do my own "Back from the dead" thing...
Recently got given the Oracle version. Which version of the film does this have on it? (it's the one with a window frame on the front)
It was £2 in Woolies, btw :)
Edit: also... How and Why is this an 18cert?
i think the Oracle version is the same as the free Bensonsworld version.
new score :gag:
but the picture is very nice though.
Ahhh, something about that score didn't seem right.
Didn't seem that bad though... but bear in mind I hadn't seen it before..
I'll try and get the ME. It's about 18 quid on PlayUSA..
Or do you think I should hold out for this 4 disk set of all 3 films?
for £2 you cant go wrong though. I have the same version, ill get round to buying the ME one day.
£18 seems a bit expensive, try shopping around.
