Question:
Like it says...
Are there 2 different versions/covers for The Fog SE - R1 ?
Cheers. :)
********* are offering US and Canadian versions, so technically speaking yes there are two covers.
Just got my R1 from CD-WOW. It's the Canadian one (well, I'm assuming it is because it's got a Canadian Home Video rating on the back) but there's no French anywhere on the cover despite the inclusion of a French audio track on the film.
I thought it was Canadian law for DVDs released in Canada with French audio to include French text on the cover? There's nothing on the reverse side, either...
I got my copy from CD-WOW and, in what I'm assuming is a bizarre misprint, it appears the entire city of New York calls it "Very Scary"
Check your copy...

Lol! Probably nothing to do with a film, just a warning to Canadians that New York is very scary.
Got mine from CD-Wow also, and it has the Canadian rating on the back, but no French text.
Ordered Sunday night, arrived from Hong Kong Wednesday!!!
Marvellous!!!

and may I add, there is ONLY ONE version of The Fog on R1 DVD.
If you look at the back, you'll notice the rating R and 14A which represent the ratings system for the USA and Canada.

MGM are okay as they distibute their own films in Canada (or use Fox ?) so like Warner and Fox they produce the English language cover for both US and Canada and then a separate French only version for Canada.
The problem is with Canada only distributors like Alliance (for Buena vista, Miramax and New Line), they are too mean to produce 2 covers for the Canadian market so you get the one combined one.
If the film has a French language track on it (like the recently released LOTR) then the cover has to be bi-lingual in Canada, but if the film does not have a French language track then it stays as the one language i.e. English. That's how I understood it from previous discussions about the subject. However, "The Fog" has a French mono track but the cover I have is just in English so this does not make any sense.

That rule so far only applys to certain studios. Warner,MGM,Fox and Columbia do not have bi-lingual covers even when they have a french track on them.

I agree with you on this as these particular companies have not bowed to pressure to start producing the bi-lingual covers unlike the majority of the companies which have. I think it is a silly rule anyway and if they must have it, make one side all English and the other all French. Simple and certainly a lot better than what they are doing at the moment where you get English and French on the same side thus ruining a perfectly good cover. Not ruined enough though to stop me buying from Canadian sourced suppliers.

The law states that for every movie that has been dubbed in French, there must be a French cover available either as a separate product, in a bilingual cover, or in a reversible cover. The companies that you mention have chosen to issue seperate discs with different covers. Some other companies use bilingual covers, which are obviously cheaper to produce.

So have I got this correct - MGM only release one version of (an English language) R1 disk? The copy of The Fog I received from Play does have both US and Canadian ratings on the back. I'm aware that Play stock Canadian sourced disks but I got Phantasm R1 (also MGM) from US Amazon and it also has the same dual rating on the back.
This would all suggest the answer is yes but if so what's with ********* and their US and Canadian disks (and the fact that the Canadian one is £2 cheaper)?
btw first time I've used Play and I'm impressed; ordered Wednesday lunchtime and received dvd on Friday.
