Kevin Smith DVD's/commentaries
Question:

I received the trilogy (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy) a few weeks back and have just finished watching them all for the first time... Top stuff!.
I'm always hearing praise being heaped on the commentaries, so I'm obviously desperate to hear those now. BUT! which order were they recorded in? (anyone know?). I know it isn't especially important as they're obviously separate tracks, but I would prefer to hear them in chronological order...
I wish I'd bought into the Smith empire sooner though as now I've got to order Dogma and J&SB Strike Back aswell (which also have commentaries and loads of extras). I'm way behind!...

Answers:

i'm pretty sure clerks, chasing amy, mallrats.
i think this is because clerks and amy are borrowed laserdisc commentaries but mallrats was recorded for the dvd.
then again i might be wrong, i've never heard this question asked before!

Daniel,
I think you are right on track! Chasing Amy is definitely from a laserdisc commentary.

with a very funny DVD intro :D

Thanks Daniel, I imagine you're probably right.
If the Clerks and Chasing Amy tracks are both lifted from laserdiscs then it's a fair assumption that Clerks was recorded first (as it's the older film). So I think I'll play them in the order your post suggests. Obviously Dogma and J&SB Strike Back will have been recorded specifically for a DVD release, so there's no confusion there...
I'm not quite sure why I thought about the order in the first place actually, as I've listened to lots of other directors' comms out of sequence. I guess I just want to be sure that I make the most of these ones as I haven't really looked forward to a commentary in a while.

Just watched this! Yup, great intro and a nice touch.
I didn't dare play that this morning because I feared spoilers (you can't be too careful!), but it's certainly worth the effort. Plus, it does confirm that the comm- the whole disc infact- is a direct transfer from the laserdisc.
I like the presentation of the Criterion Chasing Amy DVD a lot though and I like the fact that Smith and the cast are introducing the other features aswell...

Answers:

Clerks commentary - done during filming of Mallrats
Chasing Amy commentary - done a few months (I think) after CA came out while Affleck was making Armageddon and before Good Will Hunting came out, and before Dogma started filming
Mallrats commentary - done after Dogma had been filmed but before it came out
Dogma commentaries - done after Dogma had come out, but before filming of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
JASBSB commentary - done a few months after JASBSB came out
