Kubrick's First Few Films
Question:

Hi there, I'm really getting into Kubrick and know MGM just released 3 of his early films, However, his very first film is yet to see a release, "Fear and Desire", is this any good and has it not been released because at 67 minutes its a little too short to be considered a proper feature length film??
Also, how would I be able to see day of the fight, flying padre and the seafarers, his first 3 very short films? Does anyone have them lieing about on an old video, if so could i possible borrow it if I payed postage / packing charges etc? soz to be cheeky, but is there any way at all to see these films?
Thanks very much!!

"Fear and Desire" is essentially banned because Kubrick hates it so much, and it won't surface on legitimate video until the Kubrick estate says so.
However, it is readily available on bootlegged video and it's much easier to get hold of than you might imagine. ;) (http://www.ebay.com)

Fear and Desire was essentially a semi-amateur effort with Kubrick doing practically everything behind the camera single-handed, and by all accounts it's rather ropey technically (the clips I've seen bear this out) - so it's easy to imagine why Kubrick ended up disowning it. Those who've seen it say that it's certainly interesting in the light of his subsequent war films, but it's no lost masterpiece. Neither is Flying Padre, a competent but almost totally anonymous documentary - and apparently The Seafarers isn't noticeably better.
Day of the Fight, on the other hand, is terrific - a really impressive debut that I'm quite prepared to believe is Kubrick's third best film of the Fifties after The Killing and Paths of Glory, as well as providing the strongest link between his films and his earlier career as a photographer (it grew out of a photo essay he was preparing about a boxer).
