I'd nearly buy this film since it's cheap. I remember watching a good few times when I used to watch video tapes.

Anamorphic and 5.1 sound - should be worth getting, especially as there's no SE in sight. Is there a review of it anywhere? Is it cut?

Answers:

Just got mine from Play and yes its 16:9 but it says on the back STEREO not 5.1 :(

Answers:

Thats the problem with these budget releases, they tend to get ignored for some piece of crap that comes with a 2nd disc of pointless extras.
Cant find a review anywhere, most people dont seem to know it exists.

Answers:

Got mine from Play this morning, but didn't get chance to unwrap it and give it a spin. I'll be more-than-happy with an anamorphic widescreen transfer, but I can't honestly see Universal/VVI (one of the R2's worst distributors, period) offering up a 5.1 remaster... else somebody has seriously dropped the ball

Answers:

Just 2.0 soundtrack.
Phoned Play who said it was a mistake on website.
Bit annoyed as it's £7.99 at Woolies.
They offered refund but can't be arsed to send back for £1!

£7.99 from woolies, got mine Saturday.

Regret to advise that it's NOT anamorphic . The Universal Title is, but the rest of the film is NOT.
I have to get my Toshiba w/s set to stretch it to fill my 16:9 screen thus loosing definition.
Looks like this tiltle's been really messed up wise in the info-front!:( :( :(

Answers:

Also got mine for £7.99 in the Woolworths sale.
Both my player and receiver confirm the packaging is correct saying its only Dolby Stereo 2.0
Anyway at least an anamorphic picture at 1.78/1.85
Presume this is the correct OAR ? and it had not been cropped like the Universal UK Assault on Precint 13 which I refuse to buy as cropped from 2.35 to 1.78

Answers:

err... well is it anamorphic or not?

Answers:

No.
I have a widescreen TV and I have to stretch the film out to fill my screen to give the right proportions. (If I don't, then Arnie's got a flattish head).
An anamorphic print of 16:9 (like Saving Private Ryan) needs no such stretching..it plays fine from the Widescreen mode on my TV.
I too am puzzled that it hasn't been commented on but then perhaps these people may have a 4:3 TV and it isn't noticeable then.
(Oh ****** it, I hope it ain't me!!)

Lucky I read this thread, I nearly ordered it on the belief it was anamorphic. :)

£19.99 in HMV !!!
I think they have a different idea of the concept of budget releases than the rest of us.

Answers:

If its anamorphic it will fill the entire screen when you set the TV to 16:9 mode. If theres still visible black bars at the top and bottom of the screen when in 16:9 then its non-anamorphic.
Can anyone confirm ?.

They'll most likely put it up to £80.00 in a few weeks time for a "Buy one - get three free" type offer which they seem to love:rolleyes:

Answers:

With regard to Widescreen TVs - for I don't think a 4:3 TV will show up the difference between anamoprphic and non-anamorphic. I don't think the aspect ratio settings on 4:3 tvs are there because of 'anamorphic' issues - just whether the source you're watching is 4:3 or letterbox.
I'm not an expert of film ratios but with regard to 'anamorphic' films, can I put it this way:-
On my w/s Toshiba TV my best setting to watch any DVD is "Wide" mode.
Saving Private Ryan & Gladiator (different ratios, I know) are presented in the best way possible - the picture looks sharp, normal-sized and doesn't need stretching at all - there's no need.
There's no black bars top or bottom of Saving Private Ryan as it fills out the entire 16:9 sized screen. Obviously with Gladiator there are some black bars, top and bottom.
The most important thing is that these pictures have NOT needed stretching to correct the SQUATTY IMAGE that is a sign of a non-anamorphic picture - never mind if there are a few black bars at top or bottom of the picture.
If you have to stretch a picture to rectify a squatty image (on my TV it's called "Cinema" mode) then you are playing a non-anamorphic disc.
Compare "Gladiator" (Anamorphic) on your usual high spec TV mode/setting and then play "Titanic" (non-anamorphic) and see the difference. You or the TV will stretch "Titanic" slightly and in doing so you will loose some of the fine detail.

The Running Man And Commando deserve at good 2 disc SE each. Both should have remastered Picture And Sound and have directer and actor commentry (Arnie). They would be excellent additions to my collection. I have the Bare Bones R1 versions of Both films.

This is not correct, a movie can be anamorphic and still have black bars on a wide screen TV. Anamorphic 16:9 will have no black bars but 2.35:1 anamorphic will still have black lines as it would be impossible for it not to and keep the aspect ratio/all the picture as the ratio is wider than the TV!

Answers:

I find the best way to tell if a disc is anamorphic or not is to put your Widesceen TV in "4:3" mode. If people appear very "tall and thin" then you have an anamorphic disc.

Err, yes mate I realise that but if you had bothered to read the thread you would know that the film in question has an aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and as I was asking people who already own this 'particular' dvd to check it out on their set, It didnt even enter my head to go through each individual aspect ratio and list how they should appear on a WS set. ;)

Oh yes? So what happens when you watch a 4x3 film? If you care about the aspect ratio of films then the TV should always be set to 4x3. If it is anamorphic then it will automatically adjust to wide. You only need to change the TV setting from 4x3 if a DVD is widescreen but not anamorphic, in which case you need to change to zoom.

kind of OT, but i really hope a decent director/writer partnership remakes this movie someday, in a manner closer to the story in the original novel. still one of my favourite books and just as good on every re-read, it's such a shame they ditched almost everything for the movie and went with arnie and his quips.
i know some people love it for what it is, and i guess i can see why ... i just want the real version of 'the running man'. anyone who hasn't read the book really ought to pick up a copy.

I think Commando deservese the same treatment as Predator SE.

OK, can someone please confirm if this title has an anamorphic 16x9 enhanced PAL picture.
Oddjob seems to be of the belief that it not 16x9 enhanced even though most sites list it as being so.
Also can someone who actually owns it tell me if the cover art looks like this....

http://www.integralweb.co.uk/aquasites/lite/aqua/ProdImages/316/lg063726.jpg
...or is it still the same as the previous cover art....
http://www.blackstar.co.uk/img/video/cover/front-sorted/7000000/06/37/26.jpg
Some sites are displaying the red cover art in the top picture (eg. www.dvdpopcorn.com and www.play.com) and some others are showing the bottom image (eg. www.blackstar.co.uk and www.hmv.co.uk).
This re-release was supposed to happen on 19/08/02. Did this happen or are the stores still just stocking the old version and that is why there is all this confusion?
Please, no assumptions. I'm looking for someone who actually owns it and has checked the disc itself and not just what the cover says.
Also, if someone is checking for anamorphic can they also confirm that it is only Dolby Stereo 2.0 and not Dolby Digital 5.1?

Answers:

In answer to your questions, based upon my copy from the Woolworths sale
(1) cover is the top one with orange background (have also seen this on sale in WHSmith & HMV
(2) my Sony amp decodes sound as Dolby 2.0 ie plain stereo (left & right) no surrounds
(3) it is NOT anamorphic, my Sony w/s TV stays in smart view mode, whereas on an anamorphic title it switches automatically to wide, therefore need to zoom.
Picture is okay zoomed on a 32" w/s nothing special
Only plus is cheap and OAR, hopefully will get a SE sometime.

Thank you very much Malcy. I've been searching for that information for the past three days.
I guess I will go for the R1 since both R1 and R2 are non-anamorphic. I would prefer PAL but since both are less than spectacular I can't justify the extra cost of importing from England. I've also read that the R1 has the better picture anyway. I assume Universal UK didn't even bother to remaster the picture for this re-release otherwise I would expect it to be 16x9 enhanced. I'm not even sure if the R1 is still available.
The only problem with the R1 is that it comes in a snapper case.
I much prefer the orange/ red cover art of the R2 universal release. If anyone has it and a fairly decent scanner I would really appreciate it if someone could send me a quality scan so I can make a custom cover for the R1. I can be contacted via email through my profile.
C'mon, someone must have a scanner and this title. Oddjob or Malcy perhaps? PLEASE!

Answers:

I'm afraid I dont have a scanner.
Also unlike most Universal UK titles disk is only coded R2 not their more usual R2 & R4, so someone else may own the rights in Australia. You may therefore at some stage get a better version than us.

I have the Artisan region 1 release and it's not a snapper, it's in an Amray case.

Sorry threelions, I don't have a scanner either.
( Yes, I was disappointed when I found out the picture wasn't anamorphic - but on the bright side, it's still better than my old VHS copy.)
