Question:
i've noticed the name/character Wong Fei Hong in many kung fu movies, Was Wong Fei Hong a real person, why does his name appear in many movies? i've seen that Jackie chan and jet li have played his role
Can anyone tell me what the right order of films that have the character Wong Fei Hong in, i guess it would start with ironmonkey as it has a young Wong Fei Hong in the film
Wong Fei Hong was a real life person who over time has become a cultural hero in China. The closest person to compare him to is probably someone like Robin Hood.
There has been over 90 different movies and a marathon running TV show about him which dates back to the very begining of the television era so I really wouldnt reconmend trying to collect all the films made about him in order. ;)
Other characters regularly portrayed in Hong Kong movies that really did exist include Fong Sui Yuk and Fok Yune Gap.
Sometimes the use of real life characters is more subtle. For instance, Bruce Lee's murdered master in Fist of Fury is none other than the real Fok Yun Gap.
If ever there were a question I should have been around to answer, it's this one... ah well. Jimmyboy said it all really.
In his ace book, Hong Kong Action Cinema, Bey Logan attempts to set them in chronological order - though inevitably ends up lumping more than 70 films into one bracket by counting the many starring Kwan Tak Hing as one solid piece of continuity. In fact, there have been more films made about Wong Fei Hong than anyone - including Sherlock Holmes, Dracula... er.... Columbo...
Of course, on screen we get an exaggerated version of his martial arts (the No-Shadow kick was apparently a real move, though it is thought that it didn't actually carry Wong fifty feet in one go  ), but the real Wong was very tough: he once pasted a thirty man gang in a fight on the Canton docks.

Ooh Mr Vampire, that was mean. What do you think I am, some kind of delusional fanboy?
I think he's calling you a pussy ;)
