Question:
Just aquired a copy of Donnie Darko from another forum. It was advertised as a DVD9 with perfect sound and picture (also has DTS).
I thought a DVD9 was just the name of a single sided disc but upon arrival of the disc I'm not so sure. The cover looks 'copied' as does the picture on the disc. The actual disc itself content wise and menu wise is the same as the copy I borrowed from a friend a while back (was 100% geniune).
So, is this a copy or a legit disc? If its legit I will trade it on (what can I say, the look of the cover annoys me).
Any idea's?
I think the fact you told me it has DTS on the disc is a giveaway as mine certainley dosent
...ahh... what's "DVD-9" got to do with whether or not a DVD is "legit"...?...
- DVD-5 = Single-Sided, Single-Layer disc
- DVD-9 = Single-Sided, Double-Layer disc
- DVD-10 = Double-Sided, Single-Layer disc
- DVD-18 = Double-Sided, Double-Layer Disc
. . . . . .
Maybe the disc is genuine and the guy's copied the cover?
Surely you can tell?
There's a JPG of my disc here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/umd/donniedarko.jpg).
If it compares badly you have a pirate disc.
On the underside (ring) of my disc it says:
MADE IN CANADA #20217Y56 L387 2003640 L1
If yours ain't similar I'd be worried. Also, my disc has a gold underside (as all DVD9s have AFAIK).
I've seen a few pirate discs and there's always something about them that makes it obvious (so far).

Thats what I was asking. I said I thought a DVD9 was just a single sided dics. The reason I wasn't so sure when it arrived was because of the way it looks. As I can't remember the different types of DVD available I was checking here.
Also, the disc was advertised as ' DVD9 with perfect sound and picture'. So I thought it was a normal disc. Whne it arrived and looked odd-added to the way it was advertised I then wondered if I had miss-understood the meaning of DVD9.
Which forum did you buy it from?

I 'can' tell the cover and disc pictures are not right, yes. But I was wondering if the disc is a legitimate version from somewhere other than the US. Anyhow, my disc looks nothing like yours and the 20th c fox logo on the disc isnt in colour either. Plus there is nothing on the underside of the disc so it looks like I have been done!
ways to spot any pirate disc
non anamorphic, i still haven't come across ANY pirate disc that is anamorphic
region free - not an absolute but if it's a hollywood film then it would usually be region coded
asian subtitles - most pirate discs are made for the asian market so if the only features on your disc are malasian sutitles i'd be suspicious
dts soundtracks - obviously not absolute but many, many pirate discs use a fake dts track to make the spec seem better. these are usually identical to the dolby track. check amazon etc, to see if the disc has dts, if not get suspicious
also anyone who tells you the disc capacity ie dvd9 and comments on picture and sound quality as being perfect should be suspicious. many pirate dvds advertise they are dvd 9 now so people know the quality will be better, most people assume dvd is perfect quality except on pirate discs that can be camcorder jobs etc.
i'd be 99% sure your disc was a pirate just from the inclusion of a dts track, if there is an official copy with dts it's news to me.
Oh joy! Looks like I have got a pirate! :(
Got it from the avforums.
Soz to hear that Penguin :(. You liked the film enought to get it then??, what extra's are on there?, are they the same as the 'normal' release??
