Got my '24' DVDs today
Question:

My 24 DVD set arrived this morning (ordered from dvd.co.uk) . After the watching the first ep the quality is excellent. Good standards conversion, better than the BBC conversions. great menus etc.
I'm so glad I still have the the last 8 hours to watch, since I decided to wait for the DVDs to enjoy the end of this great series.

Any indication yet as to why the BBFC timings are on average about 1 to 2 minutes shorter than the BBC Two screenings?
They're not cut presumably, and PAL speedup would also apply to the TV version, so does anyone know what this is all about?

Answers:

Yes, it's to do with the crappy alchemist conversion used by the BBC. It's an old machine which doesn't give great picture results and PAL speed up doesn't apply to it.

I've watched the DVDs a bit now, and Kiefer & co. do sound different!

The alchemist isn't that old! It's really very good actually. The problem is with 24 and Buffy etc is that the motion estimation and the NTSC telecine pulldown don't exactly go together hand in hand, as you know doubt are very aware of. ;)

I've really enjoyed this series so far (currently cramming on BBC Choice) & have thought about the discs but with the format of the show isn't going to be a little difficult to watch odd episodes throughout the series like you may do with X-files or Star Trek.
Aren't you going to have to sit down for 24 hours (less adverts) every time you need a fix? :)
Cheers, Paul

Not really, you watch it in order in your own time. Think of it like a 18 hour film rather than a TV series like you mention.:)

Is the cover art pictures of the main characters or just the numbers "24?"
Can you give a small opinion/review on special features? Thanks.

Answers:

I think the '24' number cover art is supposed to be limited to HMV. The rest of us are getting the pictures.

Answers:

Well I've not got to them yet. But the special features are alternate ending and season two preview. I can give a review of the menus: very cool and unobtrusive.

Regardless of HMV, the set comes in a slip case revealing different cover art/pictures, and as the digipack folds out you get a lot more pictures as well.

Anyone got the R1 boxset yet?

It's not out until september.

Not sure if i should get the R2 set out tommorrow, or should i wait for the R1 set out next month,?
According to play.com the R2 is Widescreen 1.78:1 Anamorphic but only stereo, is the R1 set DD5.1?
Amazon.com says that R1 is 1.33:1?
Was the show broadcast in DD5.1?
Thanks in advance

man, that is letting this guy off too easy. whether he ballsed it up or not, he was blatantly trying to spoil the show for anyone who hasn't watched it all yet.
he should be banned and his IP address permanently barred. come on splobber, why keep him around?
:(
N.B. i've seen all of '24' and so i'm typing this with a cool head.

I agree - Hobo15 is a spiteful idiot.
Fortunately, even though I inadvertently read part of his message (read the first four words before my brain kicked in), the fact that he's a complete balloon meant he still didn't manage to ruin it.
Although I did spend most of the episode wondering when they were going to get that bit, right up to when the credits rolled.
Great series anyway. Thought it lost its way a bit in the middle, but the beginning and end were excellent.

Hobo15 should be banned from these forums!! He spoilt it for me anyway! As soon as I read that "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX", then someone said that he got it the wrong way round, I knew damn well what was going to happen!!

Answers:

Surely Hobo15 should be banned for that??? I'd have been ****** off if I'd read that (although I had already had it spoiled for me elsewhere - in a less unwitting fashion).
Some good interviews in the BBC Choice thing - prehaps those should have gone on the DVD...?

Hobo15 you’re a dick. You just made plenty of enemies. I kinda hope that you’re not banned so we can slowly torture you.

There's only 1 alternate ending on the DVD and I think they went with the best, most dramatic one.

Use spoiler tags if you need to.

Oh dear - I've just read somewhere that the R2 dvds are cut - for instance the final episode, part of the shootout between Bauer and Drazen is shorter, the part where Jack reloads before jumping down the dock shooting is cut, and nina doesnt mention to teri about requesting a transfer.
Apparently the r2 dvd is the american version. The BBC shown episode had extra scenes!! Not sure about the other 23 episodes though!! :(

Answers:

It means the BBC were supplied with an early edit never intended for broadcast. No surprise, because Fox have really been ***** with the BBC about formats they are delivered on and stuff. They said they couldn't provide a 25fps PAL transfer of widescreen shows when the BBC queried the NTSC tapes they were sent. And look at the DVDs.
Remember the widescreen episode of Buffy season 5 the BBC had to show with incomplete effects?
I feel for the BBC.

Alternative ending as requested:
Jack goes to look for Teri but this time he takes Kim with him. As they go through the door, there are the two people there trying to revive the security guard who Nina shot. Jack tells Kim to wait there and goes to find Teri on his own. He finds her in the room where Nina left her. She is tied up but she has not been shot and is alive and well. As the two hug, Teri tells Jack it was Nina and he tells her that they have got her. Then Kim enters and there is a big reunion and then Jack says "Let's get out of here" and they all walk out of the room together. The clock ticks to 12.00
So definitely a better ending on the actual episode to the alternate one.
Interesting to read that the BBC had been supplied with an alternate version that was never intended for broadcast because people now seem to be assuming that the episodes have been cut on the DVD but in fact the DVD's are the same as those broadcast in the States so they are the correct version. I have not had a chance to view any of the other episodes to see if they are any different.

Has anyone watched the so called 'Season Two Preview' yet. What a disapointment, all it is Kiefer Sutherland talking about what 24 is all about. All is says about season two is that will be getting more of the same. Quite why Fox bothered putting the 'extra' on the disc is beyond me, it only runs for a few seconds under two minutes.

Answers:

I really don't know what people were expecting of the 'season2 preview'.
The show has only just gone back into production. They can't have completed more than 3 or 4 episodes if that and these discs must have been mastered at least a month ago to make todays release date.
Are the episodes complete with pre-credits recaps, '...this is the longest day of my life' sections etc?

Many thanks DarkAvenger.
You`re right, it seems rather lame in comparison to the actual ending, which leads me to believe it wasn`t intended as a viable option Rather, they filmed it as a `decoy` ending in case of internet spies and the like.

The fact that there was a hell of a lot more about season two in the BBC Choice programme (in interviews with Kiefer, "Tony" and the producer), seems to suggest that the BBC asks far better questions than the makers of the DVD...
There were some great soundbites in general from the cast in the interviews - and it's a damn shame that someone didn't do the same job for the DVD.

yeah, but who cares in the end?

Answers:

Exactly. The DVDs are rushed out so we can all buy them the very day after the last episode.
We wait and get feature packed discs or get them now with not enough time for loads of extras. I know which I prefer. ;)
That said, a commentary on the first episode would have been nice... but that's what books are for! I have no doubt a behind the scenes book will be out soon if not already.

All I'm saying is that if the BBC had time to do cast interviews with everyone - then how come fox wasn't able to? There's no reason why they would have had to delay the release of the DVD.
Guess I'm not as happy as some to put up with sub-standard goods...

Considering the price (and I got mine for £33) there is nothing substandard about this package. You get what you pay for, the entire first season released just a day after the series has finished airing. Stop complaining, your begining to sound like a kid thats dropped his Ice Cream.
Besides, you sound like you've seen the interviews on BBC anyway, did you really want to watch them again over and over?
Think about it.:smokin:

I'm not buying the DVD - so I don't really care. I just think there could have been a short retrospective featurette put together with little problems - which would have been a nice bonus to people after they'd watched the last episode.
Is it really too much to expect the best from DVD producers?

And on the DVD you get to see exactly how much time elapses for the advert breaks!!!
So glad ITV didn't get to show this series!! :)

Although a few times its blatantly obvious that the time supposedly passed during the advert break hasn't example coming up, 4th ep last advert break:
Ok, the police women gets grabbed at 3:47, she cries out, Jack ehres her, then advert break, back at 3:52, and do you seriously believe that 5 minutes has passed? More like 5 seconds.

Answers:

Hmn, well I was kind of looking out for this, knowing how much US tv likes its mini climaxes at advert breaks. Generally these are of 2 kinds, some plot revelation of some kind or an action standoff. Now plot revelation mini climaxes are quite Amenable to an advert break supposedly being "real time", and 24 is choca with these kind of moments anyway, but action standoffs really don't withstand "real time" advert breaks, and especially this advert break which was 4.5mins.
ps. Hmn, I seem to be really justifying my INTP personality type thingy from that link in the general forum;).

Answers:

A lot of the ad breaks seem to follow the scene of a character in a car on their way somewhere. I was quite impressed by this little ploy. Of course there are exceptions...

Stop whining.
There could 101 valid reasons why no decent suplimental material appeared on this disc. Don't pretend to assume it's due to carelessness.
I'm the 'people' your refering to, and I'm perfectly happy with the DVDs. Maybe I would have watched some interviews, but I couldn't give a crap either way.
This ain't the Godfather or Star Wars. And considering we have it in the UK before the US you should be champing your rosey red lips on FOXs pert arse.
I'll take a rain check myself, but you should.:smokin:

The US producers have stated that the DVD is 'bare-bones' due not only to disc space but also because they want this set out BEFORE season 2 starts in the US (to rope in a new audience!) and also the cast and crew are all busy working on Season 2 so don't exactly have much free time!

They had plenty of time for the BBC. (I wouldn't have even started this debate if I hadn't seen some interesting stuff on that)
But I'll accept disc space as a reason. And I am impressed they got it out so quickly. And yes - good that we get it before the states.
But hell - people complain about the lack of extras on West Wing, CSI, Friends etc - why should 24 be exempt?
I give up...

I'm not disagreing with your point at all. And had this set been released 6 months on from now I'd be with you 100%.
But considering they've turned up trumps so soon with the set, great menus, widescreen anamorphic I'm happy.
The series is too young for me to be interested in a lot a suplamental material anyway, I usually find that kind of thing interesting two or 3 years down the line.

Answers:

For anyone that has "24," can you state whether the set comes with TV spots/promo's from last season?

Answers:

No, just the alternate ending and season 2 promo.
