Question:
Sorry to be so boring - but I need to know what's going on.
Here's what I want: ET - ORIGINAL VERSION WITH ALL THE EXTRAS.
Am I right in thinking this is only obtainable through the ULTIMATE GIFT BOX version?
Some retailers are suggesting the ULTIMATE GIFT BOX version has no extras, just two discs with the two versions of the film and a sound track CD.
What the heck are the DEFINITIVE specs of each version?

Not boring at all and a very valid question.
I believe the original cut is only available in the Ultimate box buty I thought it would contain all the extras from the other editions.
Hopefully somone in the know will be able to clarify the situation for you
;)
Yes. It's becoming a bit odd - I've still been looking around and it seems that a single-disc version of the (ahem) "Special" edition (in the same way that some schools are "special") is all that's in the boxed set, together with a featureless - Dolby 2.0 original film. Surely this can't be - someone out there must know the truth?!!!!?!??!?!!!
Amazon have the following listed:
Includes three discs, re-mastered CD soundtrack, original screenplay & collectible senitype
Disc One: Feature film--2002 version
Isolated John Williams live music score
Steven Spielberg: A Look Back & Space Exploration
Disc Two: Feature film--1982 version (Dolby Surround English/French/Spanish only)
Disc Three:
The evolution and creation of ET
John Williams conducts the orchestra
The reunion
ET achieves and trailer
DVD-ROM features with Total Axess includes behind-the-scenes footage, interviews, etc.
Widescreen anamorphic format
Number of discs: 3
which would suggest 3 dvds + one cd soundtrack, the screenplay & senitype frame.
other etailers like dv-depot also list everything so chances are the giftset will be the 2 disc version plus the original and all the other gubbins!
Still a total rip-off but if like me you have to have the original version this is the only way.
Mmmmmm... I'm inclined to believe Amazon - it's just the Dolby Surround for the original film is a bit of a disappointment, I was hoping for 5.1 and nowhere has it listed with that, just Dolby 2.0 - now that's a rip-off.
Mind you, it's only about £37 through PLAY which isn't too bad.
:oh-hum:
I have just pre-ordered the Ultimate Box from play even though its just gone up to £39.99
Which will make it the most expansive single film set I have ever bought beating Robocop: DC and Akira: LE hands down, now if only Brazil was anamorphic :(

You should try www.dvdsoon.com for the ultimate boxset. They have this at $58 (canadian) plus P&P. Works out at about £25.

does anyone know whether the canadian version will be a separate release, or whether it's the same thing as the US version? thinking re: packaging.
