Blake's 7 coming to r2 in season boxes & extras
Question:

http://www.r2-dvd.org/article.jsp?sectionId=3&articleId=4555
I am surprised that this has not been mentioned at all, so beter late than never. Fab
Thanks to Lee for pointing out a message on the disk.server.com discussion group about "Blake's Seven". It seems that www.horizon.org.uk have sent out the following message to it's subscribers concerning the series on DVD:
BLAKE'S 7 ON DVD
Finally, the news we all wanted to hear... the BBC and Fabulous Films have joined forces for the 25th Anniversary release of Blake's 7 on DVD. Each season will be released in a 5 disc fold out package and will include a host of extra features. Preliminary release dates are:
Season 1: 27 January 2003
Season 2: 14 April 2003
Season 3: 08 September 2003
Season 4: 28 January 2004
The extra features will be centred around a 4 part documentary, The Making of Blake's 7, produced and directed by Kevin Davies (well known for 30 Years in the TARDIS and his work on the TV series & DVDs of The Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy.) Consultants on the project are Andrew Pixley and Rob Emery. Some years ago work was started on this documentary, but after just a couple of days filming the project was shelved. The DVD documentary will contain interviews and features recorded at that time alongside new material. In the past few weeks a number of the Blake's 7 cast and crew have been interviewed for the documentary - including Gareth Thomas, Michael Keating, Jan Chappell, Steven Pacey, Pennant Roberts, Roger Murray-Leach, A.J. Mitch Mitchell and Sheelagh Wells, with more interviews and commentaries to be recorded.
We will be able to let you know more about the extra features shortly, but it is hoped these will include some of the Blake's 7 items which featured in other shows, such as 'Swap Shop' and 'Blue Peter' (how to make teleport bracelets out of sticky-back plastic & drinks bottles!!) as well as excerpts from Sheila Tomlinson's famous 'Blooper Tape' and previously unseen out-takes.
Information on the price of the DVDs will be available shortly, but if you order them through Horizon you can be assured of keen prices, as well as some exclusive 'extras' of our own to anyone ordering in advance. More news soon...
PASSING ON INFORMATION
We would ask anyone passing on information from Horizon's bulletins to please add the following notice each time to let people know how they can sign up for these bulletins themselves:
"This information came from one of the newsflashes regularly sent out by Horizon, the official Blake's 7 Fan Club. Any Blake's 7 fan with email access can register for these free bulletins which are sent out whenever there's any news on the show or the cast (eg. theatre, TV, film, signings, merchandise, etc.) You just need to email Susie at carnell7@aol.com and ask to be subscribed and you'll be able to receive all the latest news yourselves."
Bring it on

Great news. B7 is a tv series to rival only Babylon 5. I'm a ghuge fan of Ker Avon myself, a great character!

Uh-oh more TV that I have to buy on DVD :)
Great news...
You can all look forward to extensive reviews on DVDTImes :)

And extensive reviews on R2-DVD too. :smokin:
5 discs per season = 4 discs with 3 episodes on each, and a last with the season cliffhanger and extras. Great, so no episode cramming! R2 is definately the way to go and with never before seen extras.
I hope they get Jaqueline Pearce to do a commentary, though perhaps it would be best on the later seasons when she really was the camp panther. :-)
Or Avon with her. "Cally, I'm coming up now"

Because I write for DVDTimes and I'll be doing the reviews :)

sounds cool indeed, so how many months in advance will you be getting the discs then. I f you can't answer that specifically then e-mail me at oscar_merkx@yahoo.com
cheers

Answers:

How about zero months in advance as I'll be buying it as a bog standard consumer...
Most sites on the R2 side of things don't get oodles of advance review copies as certain sites do in the states as most R2 distributers don't hold websites in very high regard it seems.
In actual fact as far as I can tell most of our review copies come from the small distributers with the big boys pretty much ignoring us...
I would say that a good 90%+ of our reviews on DVDTimes are the result of the reviewers actually going out and buying the discs... any early "exclusives" (like TNG R1 Season 1) are due to R1 import sites shipping titles early...
I have to say it hacks me off when I see that the head of Hometheaterforum gets all the review copies he wants (in fact he gets more than he gets time to review) and he doesn't even have a dedicated review site (plus I find his reviews rather pedestrian at best). he doesn't even have a review staff , he just reviews what he likes out of the review copies he is sent.

I know there’s a newer thread than this but the wonderful :oh-hum: search won’t find it. Anyways on the up side Choices have this for pre-order at £33.99 which is the best price I’ve seen. On the down side the release appears to have been pushed back yet again (Originally end 2002, then Jan 2003, March 2003, June 2003) to the end of July! At this rate they may as well delay it until the 30th anniversary in 2008.

well at least it is still in the 25 th anniversary year

I’m sure it’ll make it, just like the Blade Runner 3 disc set came out in 2002, the 20th Ann. year. ;)

That's about right, but it's nostalgic junk so fun to watch, and better women than on Doctor Who ;)

I loved Doctor Who and Blakes 7 when I was a kid, and have just started getting the Doctor Who dvd releases recently and to be honest I think that they're excellent entertainment.
I was really surprised to see how well they have stood the test of time (well...maybe not the special effects  ) but I for one am really looking forward to these releases.

Yes, Jenna and Cally were rather like the British TV equivalents of Agnetha and Frida from ABBA!

Glynis Barber and Michael Brandon did get married after Dempsey & Makepeace. Glynis went back to Los Angeles with Michael for a few years but I think they now live in London. They're still together and have a son.

I also believe that Glynis B. went out with Steven Pacey (Tarrant in B7) for a while after the series finished.

Absolutely - thing is though, part of the beauty of this programme is that the special effects were dire - even for the 70's. As a kid I'm certain I remember a monster in one episode of Dr Who, part of whose costume consisted of a fairy liquid bottle spray-painted - thing is though I'm sure you could make out the words "Fairy" through part of the paint where it hadn't quite taken. Naff yes, enjoyable - yes.
Blakes 7 the same - let's face it - every planet in space resembled a manky disused quarry. Didn't detract IMO from the programme though. Wouldn't be the same though now if they filmed it with state of the art CGI.

Lol, I know what you mean.
Some of my favourites from Doctor Who:
The green painted "bubble wrap" hand from Ark in Space
The moment that the Wirren (sp?) falls out of the cupboard in the same episode (this had me in stiches  )
The spaceship in Stones of Blood (without doubt, the cheapest, worst looking special effect I have ever seen)
The tentacles of the squid in Power of Kroll !
(There are probably many worst than this, but I've only caught up with the dvd releases)
But strangely, this does all add to both programme's charm.
Can't wait for Blake's 7 !!
:)

The absolute worst EVER EVER spaceships EVER EVER used in a tv program were those that made up the Alien fleet at the end of the last episode of Series 2 of B7.
PLEASE someone post a link to a screen cap of this because if you remember it was a collection of kids toys eg spinning tops and toy cars turned upisde down to look lkike spaceships.
I hope someone finds a pic so you can all see what I mean.
Priceless...

Answers:

Then again, Blakes 7 had some pretty good effects from time to time (for the BBC, that is), and the Liberator is still one of the most original space-ship designs ever.
I remember seeing a documentary on Dr. Who showing a selection of the special effects ranging from the best - A supurb space fleet - to the worst - The loch ness monster head. Really showed how inconsistent the effects quality was.

There's one in particular that was the key to getting the series cancelled. I think it was the pantomime-horse style sea monster thing in a Peter Davison episode and Michael Grade (the guy responsible for killing the series off) talked about that very scene recently on Room 101 and why he hated the show. I think he saw that when he took over and decided he hated it, and regardless of what anyone thought, he had a duty to kill off the show. When he couldn't just pull it from the air, he set about making it so ridiculous that it just had to be pulled.
Blakes 7 on the other hand just ran out of steam during the 3rd season, and they admit themselves that the final season was awful and they just didn't have any fresh ideas.

i dunno, there were some good episodes in the 4th series...
The first episode of the 4th season (which i cant recall the name of at the moment), Sand, Warlord and of course Blake (which i remember watching when i was 11 or 12, ruined my childhood that did ;) )
:dork:

Although some of the stories werent quite as good in S4 it did include interesting ideas and good bits:
1) Scorpio - it was kind of refreshing for them NOT to have an invicible ship all the time
2) Soolin
3) Zenon Base - i liked the episode where they were chased round by Lind Bellingham asa robot and we got to see lots of interesting places on the base.
4) AVON really being evil and sarcastic- especially in the Orbit epsidoe where Avon chooses to kill Villa so as to lightne the load of the shuttle and save himself.
