"The Others" R2 specs - are they confirmed anywhere?
Question:

Have the specs for the R2 "The Others" been confirmed yet?
will there definately be a commentary (as has been listed)?
will we get DTS?
I've had the R3 and R1 and I'm not beyond getting the R2 if it's turns out to be the definative version.

Answers:

anyone know?
at all?

If you have had both the R3 and the R1 do you really think your going to be satisfied with R2?

Answers:

I picked up the box with UK sleeve in HMV the other day to check these, although, for some strange reason, i did not check for DTS but the extras were exactly the same as the R1 release, no commentart mentioned. I would imagine the specs will be the exact same, save maybe for the DTS track. Either way i have the R1, which may be an option if it has DTS over the R2.

Answers:

no DTS on R1.
What I'm really interested in is the commentary - if it does indeed exist!

Answers:

Your right sorry, my mistake, no DTS on the R1 (i dont have the set up anyway) so id say no DTS R2 either. On the case i looked at (official R2 retail case i believe) there was no commentary listed as i suspected. I dont think one has cleared at the BBFC neither.

Answers:

Commentaries don't need to be passed at the BBFC if they won't affect the disc's rating.
Also BVE never seem to mention DTS on their R2 packaging even if it does contain it!
SO, this is out on Monday, there are even posters everwhere in the high street!
yet, I can't find a single review of the R2 release or any confirmed specs. What gives?
The R2 Project listed these specs way back when:
Buena Vista have announced Nicole Kidman in "The Others" to buy 23 September. Extras on the disk will be:
Full audio commentary from the director
Two featurettes:
"Inside The Others" and "behind the scenes"
Visual Effects
Director's interview
Special feature on Xeroderma Pigmentosum
Play.com list these specs too.
I just find it really odd that the R1 "collector's edition" would miss out on the audio commentary! (wouldn't be the first time as "Bandits" proved but weird anyway)

I have had the bare-bones ex-rental of this for a few months now. Anyone know if the sound is re-done or picture quality changed when the discs go from rental to retail?

Answers:

Bought Jackie Brown the other day and there was a promotional leaflet for BV inside.
It contained two pictures of theThe Others sleeve - one claiming it was a two disc collector's edition, the other not mentioning anything of the sort !!
Do Buena Vista know their arse from their elbow?

Answers:

Special Features -
Audio Commentary by director Amenabar
'Inside The Others' featurette
'Visual Effects' featurette
'Xeroderma Pigmentosum' featurette
Interview with director Amenabar
No mention at all of DTS. 5.1 DD is only listed.

Answers:

thanks peeps - I phoned BVE!
NO commentary and NO DTS on the R2 release. In other words it's identical to the US version!

Answers:

This sounds like the Memento R2 release - promised better special features then when its released, its not that much better at all than the exisitng R1 version! No doubt a new SE will come out in R1 next year WITH the commentary and WITH the DTS

'Bridget Jones' Diary' was recalled because the use of the "C" word on the commentary was not passed by the BBFC for inclusion on a '15' rated disc.

Whilst that is technically true, it doesn't mean that the distributors will actually submit said commentary to the BBFC!
And here's where I admit that it was actually my fault that the BBFC forced the recall of Bridget Jones!
I was making a point to the BBFC about just how stupid their policy was about the Bridget Jones cinema rating / word substitution when they didn't bother to follow through and ensure that their 'ruling' was adhered to in the dvd release (ie on the commentary). Hence the recall!

The Danish copy will have a DTS soundtrack according to the specs at dvdoo (http://www.dvdoo.com/dvdoo/film.asp?Command=8007). Though it looks as if the commentary will be missing.
Released on the 18th November.

Somehow I don't think a commentary has ever in fact been recorded for any territory anywhere.

Answers:

But the Commentary was reviewed in an issue of DVDreview (the one with Monsters, Inc on the cover) - I don't have the issue on hand now, but if noone else can type up the quotes from the review, I'll do it sometime tonight.
Never mind here it is from their website Hope this link works (http://www.dvdreview.co.uk/reviews_uk/details.shtml?review.REF=1792&revverd.REF=2&revverd.REF=4&revstat.REF=2&revverd.REF=4&revverd.REF=4&revreg.REF=1&revverd.REF=2&revverd.REF=3)
The interview with Amenabar and featurette on Xeroderma Pigmentosum are also average, although the set is redeemed by Amenabar’s commentary. The man’s magnetism and enthusiasm are endearing and his sheer attention to detail is astounding. One of the most interesting insights is not about his use of lighting and score, but more his use of silence and bareness to invoke anxiety – leaving the scares to the imagination rather than relying on expensive effects.

yeah but wasn't there another thread the other day that had something about DVDreview (or another mag) reviewing a commentary that definately didn't exist?
In fact - that quote you have posted was the one! (methinks the "dvd reviewers" at DVDreview are not exactly being truthful!)
If they've reviewed a commentary then how come then BVE don't know ANYTHING about a commentary for this release?

Answers:

I've emailed the editor of DVDReview - will be interesting to see what he has to say.

just got this highly amusing reply from the editor of DVDreview:
"We at DVD Review have been a little annoyed about this, like you, but I'm sure BVHE didn't tell you that it was them who sent us the Region 1 discs to review from -- as they were unable to provide us with the UK discs for the issue they wanted a review in. Unfortunately, we were not informed about the commentary being removed from the UK release -- we certainly wouldn't have been so generous with extras if we had known -- by BVHE.
I can only apologise for the mix up which leaves many UK fans
disillusioned as to the UK's contents -- another example of a
superior Region 1."
 what a moron!

Am i not the only one who thinks DVD Review is a little crap?
The post above just typifies everything about that magazine. They say things like, 'the DTS sound is absolutely amazing', then they give the sound 3 stars because there's no commentary??? I know they review discs based on content AND presentation but for FFS sort it out!!
I also love the hardware reviews. There was a DVD player last month, (if you're wondering at this point why i'm quoting so much even though i hate the mag, it always ends up on the staff room table at work - free read!!), and in its 'Unique Selling Point' boxout, it had something along the lines of; 'The remote is so sensitive i could switch chapters whilst making my tea!!!Enthuse enthuse...'.
People, what the hell is this mag on about? and why is it still in circulation with drongo's like that working on it!!??
As for The Others, the DTS track on the R3 is no better than the Dolby mix, (i've just opened a can of worms at DVDReviewer about this particular DTS vs Dolby subject), and i've about 20 people to back me up! The Dolby track on the R2 is superb, can't you just be happy with that? Bummer that there's no commentary though.
Westy :)

They are all a little crap to be honest, but they only cost me an average of £2.50 an issue, it's something to read at work & the ads come in handy for a bit (well a lot) of pricematching at ASDA ;)
