Are they going to release the original Star Wars trilogy on DVD?
Question:

Anyone know? I'm suprised they haven't already, especially while sales are so high....!

Answers:

Chances are the ORIGINAL trilogy will never see the light of day. Lucas does not consider them the finished article.

Oh dear lord - how can anyone ask this question and keep a straight face??

Eps 4, 5 & 6 are going to be a huge disappointment when they finally do see the light of day: no DTS (given the lack of it in eps 1 & 2), new special editions with no seemless branching to the originals which means:
-Greedo firing first
-Apparently a rescored ep4
-CGI which looks out of place
-Natalie Portman digitally placed into ep6
and probably much more...
The hardcore fans will be baying for Lucas' blood!

I'm really pleased now that I failed to sell my original Star Wars VHS tapes a couple of years ago when I advertised them, as (has been mentioned) the DVD releases (when they do finally get a release) will be EDITED about versions.

Those will die out sooner than you, so you better transfer them to DVD-Rs or get LDs. I got a definitive 9LD box (of which I do not quack about enough obviously), which I'll put on DVD-Rs. Lucas can kiss my white cheeks.

Erm, not sure what you mean.....am I missing something?!
They've put loads of old films onto dvd though haven't they? I can understand the video quality may not be up to scratch with newer movies, but it'd still be better than VHS and in widescreen. The audio could be remastered; wouldn't be the first time that was done.....!

The only thing we do know for sure is not before episode III is finished. Everything else is just speculation.

Christ lets see what he does release before berating him!!!:(
He is now being criticised for his ep 4-6 releases before they exist. Is there any limit to how much this man can be criticised!!!:brickwall
He may do a movie in 2008 about lets say a wronged cop. Why dont we start criticising that just now to save time!!:)

Man, what is Lucas thinking? He's ripping off a 15 year old Terminator movie by making the cop 80% CGI! His side arm is CGI, his clothes, his apartment. Even his car is CGI and it looks so fake! Why don't he just make a saturday night cartoon instead of "live action". And look at how he decided to film it, using those mini-micro-HDDVD cameras hidden under a person's nail, everything's shaky and then he digitally alters the footage to remove the jerkiness and stabilize the image. :oh-hum:

Point is they do exist, the man can't leave the things alone. Back in '97 everyone was fairly excited about the Special Edition Star Wars Trilogy, but aside from Empire (which has had only very minor adjustments made) they are a shadow of their former selves. What is made worse is that Lucas refuses to ever have them released as they originally were considering them now to be merely rough cuts, meaning we don't even have a choice in the matter other than to obtain/retain the older formats such as VHS or NTSC Laserdisc. What AndyIngram listed there is partly conjecture but some of it has already happened, Greedo does shoot first, the CGI does look out of place, it does little more than add atmosphere and distraction with no gain to the telling of the story. There has been talk of further additions being made to round out the 6 episodes, with insertions of characters from the first three into the later three and inclusion of the Imperial March on Episode 4. Let him be criticised if he prevents our wish to have a choice.

The rumours about Natalie Portman's involvement in a re-edit of Episode 4 were just that rumours, she totally denied that she was going to be filming anything but Episode 3.

Not to put the cat amongst the pigeons, but in defence of those doing anything to get the version they want (i.e. pirate versions, copying videos etc...) if you don't give the people what they want they will get it elsewhere.
I think the recent release of E.T. in R2 with only the "new" edit is a prime example of why customers will go for the multi choice R1.
R2 distributors shouldn't honestly complain that R1 releases are cutting into their profits, because they are not supplying the demand.

Not really. The hardcore fans will lap it up. It's the casual fans that will be up in arms.

Episodes 4 to 6 will be re-released when Ep3 has finished production. All the original model shots are being re-done using CGI. A theatrical run will then ensue in 2006, followed by a DVD release 6 months later.
The original trilogy that we know and love will not be released on DVD.
