Question:
I only usually lend out my films to 2 trusted mates (they are both film collectors too and treat the discs as I treat mine)
However, just over 2 months ago a guy from across the road who is in the PC business came across and helped with a problem I was having with my computer. He saw all my DVD's (nearly 500) and asked if he could borrow one.Seeing as he had just put in a few hours work for me (for free) I said yes and he took "Saving Private Ryan".
I only got the disc back today (and that was after much hassling for it) and it is covered in scratches  I have just put it in my player and at the 32 minute mark the picture breaks up really bad and then at 33 mins locks up
Guess who is having a knock on their door tomorrow afternoon!?
Having seen the state of rental DVDs from Blockbusters and the like I am totally anal about my collection and no-one, not even family borrow them. And stories like yours reinforce the view in my mind that i can "trust no-one". Hope that it all works out Mr Speed, give him hell!

I had the same problem when I lent Audition out to a female friend. I told her to take care of it, but it came back absolutely covered in tiny scratches. It still works ok, but I had a good moan about respecting other peoples property and not to expect to borrow another one.
I suggest you go round to his house with a big nail, cover him in scratches and see if he still works ok.
i also had the same problem with a m8
he took a film and cameback if he had been thrown round, all scratches everywhere,
i said to him you didnot take the film in that way,the guy say he did,i could not belive this :norty:
i am sure he just swapped my disc with another, and gave me the ****** copy,
told him where to go after that, has not come back to borrow any more dvd since, we are still m8's but he just dont ask for anymore dvds,

One time my girlfriends' cousin got a DVD player that was hackable. I was the only one around with multiple regions DVD's so he asked if he could check out a few to see if it worked. I called down with another guy anyway and we went viewing. After 10 mins we were finished with Rocky Horror R1 and her cousin takes it out of the player and drops it, nay, slides it across the coffee table face down. The other guy knows how I am about my DVD's and he told me later about the look on my face. No damage done to it like, but needless to say I done the rest of the movie loading. :)
Mr.Speed: It's tricky to call, but bascially he ballsed up a very good demo DVD. I would give him hell but then again I don't need anyone to help me with my PC stuff ;)
I only lend out to a few trusted mates now, after having discs returned that have had the brillo pad treatment.
I lend them two trusted friends only and they always come back mint, but my missus lends them to her dad and he never brings them back, he denies having them untill i go round to visit and steal them back no matter how many times i say he cant lend them she always gives him the ones i havent seen yet etc.
i also cant find my final fantasy 2 discer ive never seen it and i cant find it anywhere, its been nicked because im also anal about my collection. yet no-one claims to have seen it.

Sorry man but :)
I only borrow my DVDs out to trusted people.
If they don't return them in mint condition I don't borrow them out anymore.
That'll learn them . :p
bad point for dvds. Mine are always getting swiped off my shelf and returned months later!
I've forgotten who has my Shakespeare In Love, and am also waiting for the return of a couple of R0's.
The problem is thinking up excuses to tell them that you don't want to lend them out. Anyone got any good ones?
Believe it or not I went round a mates house and found one of his dvd's face down on a table with a mug on top of it.
I can't understand why people treat other people's property like that  - I lend mine to family but always worry about they will be cared for.

After reading MrSpeed's message I think I'll move mine out of view(living room) and fill the shelves up with vids, they can borrow the vids but not the DVD's :)
Not to be funny but whats with this "Borrow them out" Borrowing is receiving not giving out.. sorry but i'm seeing this more often at work like opposite "can i lend a Fag of you"
Oh and to the topic on hand all my new DVD's now i just keep in the shrinkwrap.. I come home from work and i see DVD's missing from my collection - either it's my Brother borrowing them or him lending them to his mates - the idiot..
The worst thing is when people borrow DVD's what you have not watched yet.. time for a lock on my Door methinks.

That's what i used to hate when people borrowed my old videos, coz everyone had a video player everyone and their Mum would come round pinch a film and i could never keep track of them. No doubt there are still films of mine out there in the big wide world feeling lost :(.
Glad i can play the ol' 'Well it's a different region DVD, prolly won't work on your machine' card.
i lend my dvd's to anyone, even a few to regular customers at work. i've had none come back unplayable but a couple of people who brought them back with light scratches don't get to borrow any more.
i'm not bothered about who has what either, i must have 25 dvds lent to people at the moment, i forget what and who but i trust them all to bring them back. just the other day a mate returned 5 dvd's, i was sure he only had one.;)
I lent my Region 1 Terminator 2: Ultimate Edition do someone. Not only was the metalic cardboard cover totally creased but the free book had all its pages edges bent and the discs were scratched. The free book that came with the DVD was in so perfect condition it looked as if though it hadn't been read.
I will never ever lend out a DVD to anyone.
MrSpeed - let us know what happens tommorow m8. See if he'll give you money for a replacement.
The rental scratches are actually caused by the cases rather than the people, in work we get so many people who check the disc before they take them and demand a clean one if their disc appears to be scratched. The truth is the cases can't hold the discs in them for more than 10 seconds, their absoulutely pitiful but no-one seems to be doing anything about it.
Why do people do this? When I borrow something from someone I am always extremely careful with it and if it gets damaged while I'm borrowing it I will buy a replacement to give back to them.

Can I have a loan of a couple of DVD's please Tiff ;)
Oddly enough I gave my dad a loan of the Royal Tenenbaums tonight and I'd cut the cellophane wrapper so you could get the disk out but would keep the cover nice and protected ... well the disk came back with the cellophane ripped off and flung in the bin ... I know it sounds petty but I was trying to keep that disk (and a few others) in pristine condition
Yes, these threads pop up now and then and it's always the "horror" stories.
I never lend out either, I did early on, and to this 45 year old guy who's been helpful to me, plus his wife kicked him out and married a russian mobster, she for money, him for the green card, and so I felt sad, he just got a dvd player back in 1999 and I already had a 2 to 3 hundred dvds, so he start taking them one by one, first few returned fast and in great condition, but further on, it started taking weeks, then months, and the plastic that protects the cover became so scratched, like it was used to ride on the asphalt, and some covers looked like something was spilled on them, you know like paper does after being wet, and other smelled, I'm very perceptive to smells, some kind of perfume, I hate most of them, especially "alien" smells, so I gathered 15 or so discs he ever rented from me, sold them on ebay and bought new copies, and NEVER give out to anyone.
Tell us how it goes Mr Speed.

what the hell kind of cases are you using?
we use amarays every time. if whatever company you work for does different when the new releases come in just use the amarays they arrive in and switch the crappy non disc holding ones to the display case on the shelf. trust me even with amarays the discs will come back scratched to hell but at least you cut out damage in transit.
the problem is it's impossible to prove who scratched them unless it's a huge scratch that definatel wasnt there when they went out or they are the first person to rent them so we just have to put up with paying for the replacement.
A neighbours kid once borrowed The Matrix and the little ****** had decided to undo the snapper case.
He didn't put it back together very well.
T.L.****** even got his Dad to give it back to me.
I did eventually replace it with the sexy looking R4 Amaray.
Kids, bunch of Arse if you ask me.
These threads are always so bloody funny! :D
I think that part of the problem is that many of the *general public* regard DVD as they do VHS not realising that DVDs can be damaged far easier than the more sturdier tapes.
I lend my films out to about 8 different mates and get them all back in perfect nick. The only person I have to chase to get them back (and then he's got to find the disc and box seperatly because heaven forbid they should actually be together  ) is my brother. I've told him off several times yet he still does it, but he's got this habbit of just walking into my room and taking them out

I find the big problem is just with getting discs back and forgetting who's got what, I realised the other day that my copy of "Loser" is missing, after the initial pleasure of realising this I did start to wonder exactly where it had got too!

Before someone who is world most noisy telesales person and is really mad asked me to borrow my DVDs and I didn't lend to him. Then since the firm closed now one asked for my DVDs as my family doesn't have them and no one else know I got them ;-)
I handle DVD reasonable care, but you still get a couple with problems.
I just wish DVD is a lot tougher and don't strach too easily.
