Enigma R2 & R4: cropped
Question:

According to the review (www.dvd.net.au/review.cgi?review_id=1723) of the R4 release, both PAL versions of Enigma have been cropped from 2.35:1 to 16:9.
I can't understand why this hasn't been brought up before, and - more importantly - why it's happened in the first place - aren't 2.35:1 transfers widely accepted these days?
Hopefully the upcoming R1 will be in the correct aspect ratio. Otherwise, it would appear that the studio or director have requested that the film be transferred like this in all regions a la Apocalypse Now - though God knows why... :oh-hum:

"...aren't 2.35:1 transfers widely accepted these days?"
...not by J6Ps who own 16:9 TVs and who, after spending mucho dinero on that new toy want their whole screen 'filled' ... no black bars - PLEEZZZ!!!...
. . . :o . . .

Indeed... but (fortunately) the vast majority of new releases that were shown at 2.35:1 at the cinema end up on DVD this way... don't see why this release has to be different?

What a ********-up. They're obviously too penny-pinching to release a separate full-screen version, so have settled for the same infuriating compromise the digital TV stations have - "Our viewers don't want to see black bars" - managing to please nobody in the process.
Ah well, at least this sort of thing is very rare on DVD: let's just hope it stays that way.

R1 will also be the same.

I know the IMDB lists the film as 2.35:1, but it has been known to be wrong on occasion.
Does anyone know for sure it was made to be shown at this aspect. I find it strange that all three regions would have the wrong ratio.

Is it "cropped" or is the matte just opened up as with Shadow of A Vampire?

Answers:

It was definately 2.35:1 or thereabouts when I saw it at the cinema.

is the picture as terrible on the retail release as it was on the rental?
to rub salt in the wound the trailer on other rental titles was pin sharp, whereas the film itself was horribly grainy and badly encoded.

Definate 2.35.1 when I saw it so will not be buying this crap DVD release. Was looking forward to this one as well.

It was bad enough to discover that the disc was in the wrong aspect ratio when it arrived in the post a week ago Monday -- but the transfer is absolutely dire as well.
Having watched the reference quality disc of Lord of the Rings before giving Enigma a spin on Sunday, I was absolutely shell-shocked at the pitiful transfer. The transfer was generally grainy, the picture looked very washed-out, and compression artifacts were rife during the entire movie.
I too saw the film on its theatrical run. It was *definitely* framed at 2.35:1. I don't claim to be an expert, but the picture did look zoomed as opposed to open matte. Rather inexplicably, the end credits are in the correct ratio though - as the Region 4 review points out. Sheer lunacy.
It's bad enough the movie had to be run through a rental window before going to retail - it is not like it set the box office alight on either side of the pond. But now, after waiting nearly a year to buy it, total disappointment.
Roll on the R1 version. It may be equally featureless (which is a pity, given the subject matter of the movie), but one would tend to put more faith in it being presented in the correct aspect ratio.

Answers:

The credits at the start are in 2.35.1 than when the film starts it goes to 16.9.
Can't understand B.V thinking on this one.

There have been rumours on the Home Theater Forum that the initial R1 will be bare-bones, but there will be a later release of a special edition with extras
If this also applies to the UK, maybe it will have a cleaned-up transfer in the correct aspect ratio?
I wonder if this is a scam to help sell more copies - make the initial release poor-quality to help 'enhance' the Special Edition that appears a few months later...

The US release is from Columbia who have started doing these psuedo rental versions without extras then a SE upto a year later ala Black Hawk Down, Mothman Prophecies etc.
However as UK release is from Disney not sure if they will share them. Especially as this was an independent film (from Mick Jagger) so probably little in the way of extras produced at the time, and those coming from Columbia have been specially commissioned.

So, no one knows why this cropping is happening? R2: Shiner (Michael Caine) and R2: Saving Grace are both cropped from 2.35:1 to 1:85:1.
Great transfers, but why, oh why?
