Question:
DVDBO have this up for pre-order on 29th Oct for CAD 136.95, about £60
Recall a thread a while ago about this set being only available as an exclusive from Carl Sagan's web site (I think), and it was considerably more expensive than this price; and it is listed as the collectors edition, so I would assume it is the revised broadcasts that are included - although the specs listed are non-existant
Just checked Amazon.com, and they have it as in stock, but works out @ approx £110 + shipping + duty (more than likely)
I think there's some confusion here. The release listed on Amazon US is apparently still the same one they've offered for around two years, and, as you say, at a substantially higher price, as has always been the case with this title. Perhaps the Carl Sagan website exclusive was widened a little to include Amazon, as I haven't seen this set offered anywhere else online until very recently.
The set as now offered on CDNow, Tower Records Online and Amazon Canada is listed as a pre-order for release on Sept 24, at around the price you described for DVDBO also. The specs provided at these sites, such as they are, suggest that this forthcoming release is identical to the original box, as offered at Amazon US. My guess is that they're simply reissuing the same set at a lower price. It's on that assumption that I've finally placed an order for it...though I've wanted this box since I first saw it, the original price would have brought a stiff and punitive duty charge down on me from Australian customs (who start caring about that kind of thing once your incoming goods are worth above A$250, and then do a lot of catching up!).
:)
The version on sale at Amazon is the original release from a few years ago which was sold on CarlSagan.com, Amazon and one other site only. It had an RRP of around $170 although at one stage Amazon sold at a discount, not now though.
This includes 5.1 sound ! and updates on the episodes, although picture quality is poor. Probably original has not been remastered.
DVDFile mentioned around a month ago that a distributor had picked this up for the September release which would go on general sale, so why e-tailers are starting to list it. This had a RRP of $120 although specs have not yet been announced to confirm if its just a repackage of the old version.
Now becomes much more affordable and definitely something I am considering.
My wife bought this for me last Xmas. Makes brilliant Sunday morning viewing at one ep. a week. Most of the science is still remarkably up to date considering when it was made and there is an "update" at the end of some of the episodes made ten years after the series was made to bring the science more in line with current findings and thinking. The only sad thing about the whole thing is that Carl Sagan is no longer with us to make more of these wonderful programs. That Sam Neil BBC science show a year or so ago was puny by comparison with Cosmos.
My Girlfriend bought me this from Amazon a year or so ago.
Wonderful series.
I wonder if it will ever get a UK release? I'm sure the set is Region 0, but it would be nice if it was available from play etc.
On a related note I watched Contact last nigth again. What a brilliant, under-rated film it is.

I would think that the reason they haven't bothered with a UK release (or an Australian one, for that matter) is that as the programme was originally made in NTSC for US public television, no UK distributors see the point in offering a NTSC-PAL conversion...?

As already mentioned, there seems to be a fair smattering of specs for it online by now, at least at Tower's US site...they could have gotten these easily enough from info on the first limited release, but as it's the title's first appearance on their site you'd think their information would either be checked or otherwise be non-existent!

Is that correct? I thought it was a WGBH/BBC joint production. It was certainly a big hit over here when shown in the 80s
