HKL Wise Buys?
Question:

This bad boy has been done to death, but I asked for your HKL recommendations a while back. Firstly, I bagged Police Story (wish I'd have waited for the Splash sale) and loved it to bits. So last night I took the credit card by the horns and bagged the Bruce Lee box set from Play and Iron Monkey from Splash. So the question is, considering I loved Police Story, did I make a wise purchase and what would you recommend to get next?

Answers:

Iron Monkey is a fab film IMHO
Enjoy :)

If you like martial arts, then check out the following in the Splash sale:
Once upon a time in China 1 and 2
Magnificent Butcher
Iron-fisted Monk
Encounters of the Spooky Kind
Drunken Master
Snake in the Eagle's Shadow
All are very good and I'm sure there are few people around that would dispute it!

I'd check out Magnificent Butcher and Snake In The Eagle's Shadow first (from the Splash Sale) although they are both period Kung Fu movies so not in the same vein as Police Story.
Red Wolf Platinium Edition is a steal at £11 from Bensons World, really enjoyed this film perhaps not an ideal introduction into HK films but it is a 'wise buy' :)
If you like Police Story im sure you'll LOVE Project A, probably the best all round HKL release to date, also Armour Of God might be worth checking out if you prefer a modern day setting and a mix of action and martial arts.

If you liked Police Story you will definitely like the sequel which you can get cheap from benson's world here http://www.bensonsworld.co.uk/medusajulydvd_a21.htm.
Also check out
Project A
Miracles
Magnificent Butcher
Prodigal son
Ninja in the Dragons Den
Mr Vampire
All of which (except Project A and Prodigal son) can be bought cheaply from Beson's world or splash.
Also if you gonna get Drunken master and Snake in the eagles shadow it would be best to wait because HKL are gonna rerelease them on their Platinum series label.

Answers:

just avoid Black Sheep Affair :oh-hum: and City Hunter if you think their comedy is on par with the Tweenies

Also the current releases of these are wrong aspect ratio they were cropped to 1.78 The HKL website admits this and says will be corrected for new Platinum releases either very late this year or 2003
The best HKL so far is Project A Platinum this is a period film but has modern style Jackie Chan stunts, also superb making of documentary on disk 2 running at well over an hour.
Only problem is not yet on sale as only released a couple of months ago. I bought anyway.

Cheers guys! I had heard that MVC were doing Project A for £12.99 but when I went I had no such luck. I'll hang fire and see if I like Iron Monkey before choosing where to go but I think Magnificent Butcher is winning the race so far.

Police Story 2 and Magnificent Warriors are also cropped if your thinking of buying 'em.

Magnificent Butcher is my most watched HKL DVD. Not just because I love it but because its also requested by people who come to watch movies at my house.
