MGM DVD releases of Clint Eastwood/Leone Westerns
Question:

Namely, Fistful Of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More, The Good The Bad & The Ugly.
Are they any good? Decent transfers? I know the sound is only in Mono. They are in the HMV BOGOF offer (buying 2 works out at £8 each).
Are they the best versions or will i buy them only to find out that a super duper extra release is planned for next week?
Thanks.

Answers:

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly is great, and is the only anamorphic one, the other two are non-anamorphic despite packaging claims.

Answers:

The transfers are acceptable rather than outstanding - and I may well be overrating them simply because I waited about fifteen years to have them in the correct aspect ratio!
But Leone's films always did look pretty grainy - an inevitable side-effect of the cheapskate Techniscope process - so it's debatable how good they're ever likely to be.

Answers:

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly in particular is good. The deleted scenes (allbeit in Italian) are also intriguing and really deserve a branching version (I ca live with subtitled Italin for a few minutes)
Plus the fact they are in HMV's BOGOF sale (Where I picked up my Dollars.. DVD's the other day as it happens) means they are a bargain, particularly if you are a fan of the Spagetti Trilogy.

About 8 months ago I was gonna pick up the Clint titles in a sale @ splashdvd who were selling them for £7.99 each.
I was informed each of the titles are due re-issues so I didnt bother getting them in the end.

GB&U is being restored, but I broke down and got the DVD in May, hope to watch it very soon.

Answers:

Play have these films for £7.49 delivered.

The audio on a Fistful of Dollars seems to downgrade a notch (a noticeable notch) towards the end of the movie. But my old NTSC laserdisc Clint Eastwood boxset collection of the Spaghetti Westerns did exactly the same so it's obviously the state of the best print they have.

It mainly proves that it is the same stuff. MGM just transfered the laserdisc material to DVD. Fistful of Dollars is probably the worth DVD (in term of quality) I have in my collection beside "Blood Simple"

Anyone know if there is a decent release of A FISTFUL OF DYNAMITE?.
Loved that film and the music was great.

The long version was screened on BBC2 (anamorphic albeit cropped to 1.85:1) a while back. I taped it. :D
The only thing missing from this, that's IN the Restored Italian Print (available on Italian DVD, I believe) being the end flashback. There wasn't one. :( Not even the short one thats on the Laserdisc. Let alone the 3 minute one I saw in the cinema two years ago.
