Austin Powers IMOM R2 sound problems
Question:

Just received a copy of this on region 2, watched last night and approx every 3/4 mins the DD soundtrack audio suffers dropout - i.e. the sound is muted for 1/2 secs when the link between the DVD player and amp appear to be broken (DD display on amp flashes back to Pro Logic). This occurs throughout the whole film - extremely annoying.
Is this a known fault with this disc - I'm trying to find out if it's an authoring problem with the disc or whether it's a hardware compatibility problem. I've got around 250 DVDs in my collection none of which suffer this problem with my current setup so at the moment I'm assuming the disc is at fault.
Set up - Pioneer DV444, Yahama DSPA5 amp.

Answers:

I have the exact same problem - and also have a DV444 and a DSPA5.
I watched it the other week and noticed this exact same thing. It was the first time I have watched it on my DV444 and I can't recall it happening on my old player.
I have been meaning to connect up my old player to narrow it down to the player or the disc.

Hmm...looks suspiciously like a hardware compatibility issue then, interesting....

This may sound really stupid, but first of all check it doesn't do it with any other discs. I had this problem at one point (on ever disc), and it turned out that the RCA cable I was using to connect my DVD player to the audio decoder was damaged, and that replacing it fixes all problems.

It's a known problem and can be sorted out.
It's was caused by certain players.
Pathe mastered the disc to the maximum burst bitrate allowed by the dvd spec.
Problem is not all players (maily first gens don't) support full bitrate (DVD Spec supports something like 10.07Mbps burst, but some players can't cope with more than 9.8Mbps. The dropouts occur because the player can't get the full datastream off the disc when the bitrate reaches burst level.
Pathe reissued the a fixed version of the disc (slightly lower bitrate). If you have just brought the disc you might have got one from old stock. You can send the disc off to Pathe for a replacement (call them first to get the latest address)
Most companies now master discs to the lower level 9.8Mbps bitrate (so just because some manufacters decided to cut corners we have to put up with slightly inferior quality)

Thanks for the info Chris, is there a contact email or tel no for Pathe in the UK? I've checked www.pathe.co.uk and can't find anything.
