A Guide To Stanley Kubrick On DVD!
Question:

Me and Narshty have just given up our Sunday producing a DVD Times guide to Stanley Kubrick on DVD, available here (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Feature&id=47&story=3493) !
So do us a favour, and check it out! ;)

Answers:

Very nice guide.
You'll probably know the answer to this: I didn't understand why the Full Metal Jacket reissue was 1.33:1. You say that Kubrick wanted it this way in the film review. I was put off buying the disc because of the ratio, but was it shot in super 35, so in fact you don't miss anything with the full-frame transfer?

Answers:

It was shot with spherical lenses, but not with the super-35 process.
Most cinemas can't screen 1.33:1, so Kubrick shot it so that nothing crucial would be cut off when matted/masked to 1.85:1. It does look much better in the taller aspect ratio, which is on the DVD.

You and Jon did a superb job on the guide Raph! I got sidetracked with all of the review links, but I read each and every one of them :D - Nice work guys!

Thanks tiff! :)

Kudos.

Might also be worth mentioning about One Eyed Jacks, the Marlon Brando western, Kubrick contributed to this and its rumoured begun filming at the helm before leaving the project. Its arguable how tenuous a link that is.
Cheers for the guide though

If you're to add One Eyed Jacks, you may also wish to add the rather superb DVD of The Spy Who Loved Me. By far the best James Bond film ever made, and wouldn't you know it, it's the one Kubrick worked on. :)

According to every source I have read Kubrick collaborated with Brando but quit before shooting even began. In fact at the timer Kubrick was reported to have said that Brando always intended to direct and he was just looking for excuses to get rid or get Kubrick to quit...
Have you a source thats says he directed any of it? Whether in teh movie or not, as this would be interesting...
As to the feature... it is a great piece of work... well done both of you...
However as the resident Kubrick fanatic I thought I'd nitpick a couple of things
Firstly I weould have mentioned Day of the Fight as it was not an "industrial short" and it formed the basis of Killer's Kiss...
I would have mentioned that Anthony Mann started directing Spartacus and in fact the early scenes are directed by him not Kubrick...
Also I would have mentioned Kubrick's long obsession with Napoleon and Aryan Papers as these are the two most significant films he didn't do
Then again if I'd have done the feature I would still be writing it next year :)

I partially agree with McD... although one mornings working with Ken Adam with regard to lighting one set (albeit the huge submarine set) is quite a slight involvement :)

Answers:

Also, you could add Chinatown by Polanski, since Kubrick paid to see it at his local cinema. ;)

Fawlty, you're a top bloke! But I don't know if you qualify as the resident Kubrick fan as you have only been with us for a short time.
We have a member called 'kubrick' who is probably a big fan and has been in residence much longer. And 'Clipper-' would indeed feel miffed by your claim. He's the toppermost of the poppermost on Kubrick.

Or Dekalog, since Kubrick wrote the foreword to Faber & Faber's published screenplays…
Or Singin' in the Rain, since Kubrick used the title song in A Clockwork Orange…
Or Lola Montes, since Kubrick claimed he was influenced by Max Ophuls above all other directors…
…and so on ad infinitum!

Tragically, Clipper was brutally murdered a few weeks ago, so I think Fawlty can indeed be counted the Forums' resident Kubrick obsessive! I know for a fact he's read everything that Clipper ever wrote... :D

Well it was either murder or suicide ... the jury's still out :)
Having re-read my nitpicks ... I would only say that the one regarding Day of the Fight/Killer's Kiss is actually truly worth mentioning...
Also we could mention White Men Can't Jump as apparently Kubrick recommended it to Katharina Kubrick as a silly enjoyable film  I can only hope Katharina was joking (info direct from horses mouth on alt.movies.kubrick)
Oh and apparently the breathing sound in 2001 was done by Kubrick as well (same source as above)...

Why? There are far worse films to recommend than White Men Can't Jump, and far less enjoyable ones!
Ron Shelton is one of the most underrated directors currently working - I don't think I've ever been disappointed with a film with his name on (he wrote Under Fire and directed Bull Durham and Tommy Lee Jones' best-ever performance in Cobb) - and I can easily see why Kubrick would champion his work.
Since his favourite cinematographer John Alcott shot Under Fire, it's a racing certainty that Kubrick would have seen it - and highly likely that he'd have been impressed with Shelton's script and would have gone on to catch his subsequent films. He may even have pulled strings behind the scenes to help get them made - he was known for championing the work of promising young talents by making a few phone calls to people in high places: Peter Weir is a known beneficiary of this.

Answers:

Agreed that there are far worse films but there are far better ones as well ...
It just seemed an unusual choice (to me anyway)... then again the full list was a bit of a hotch-potch (intentionally)
