Hellraiser III ???
Question:

Does anyone know if Hellaiser III: Hell on Earth will ever be released in widescreen? I assume it was shot in 1:85:1 as this is the ratio the first two are in.
This is my favourite of the first three, and if we can have decent releases of the first two, then why not number three?
Was it straight to video or does it have something to do with rights issues??

Answers:

Hellraiser II was on the cinema near me for about a week !!!
I never got to see it so I don't know if it was in widescreen or not.
I ended up getting the R2 as it was only £6.99 from MVC and it completes the collection with number four and five.

Answers:

I believe it is meant to be in widescreen...
However given the films lack of popularity and small budget I would guess that the distributers had a decent 4:3 master ready to go and didn't bother to prep a widescreen master which would've cost more money...
Shame I know but that's big business economics for you... :(

...erm... think again!... <a href="http://us.imdb.com/Details?0274546">Hellraiser VI: Hellseeker</a> is on the way...

Does anybody know if the R2 version of Hellraiser III is cut, like the R2 versions of Hellraiser I & II are ??

Answers:

I rather suspect that the version of Hellraiser III on DVD is the full "open matt" version. I saw this at the flicks when it was released (ratio about 1.85:1) and there doesn't appear to be any information missing from the sides of the images.
Many films around this time were filmed with a video release in mind - therefore the cinema print would have been cropped top and bottom to obtain a cinema ratio, and the full frame exposed for the video release.
If you have a widescreen TV, zooming the picture to fit the screen (i.e. removing the top and bottom of the picture) should replicate the cinema ratio.

The trouble with that is it makes the picture worse. I rather watch it in smart mode on my TV.

'smart mode' as in 'looks like squashed *****' you mean!

Answers:

I find the 'Smart' picture mode on my Sony very useful for 4;3 stuff as it stops everything looking really stretched across the screen, without losing a great deal off the top and bottom.

Answers:

This may seem like a stupid question... but why don't you watch 4:3 stuff in 4:3 mode?

isn't ther an uncut 'red edition' in germany of hellraiser 3, don't know about ratio but i seem to remember it was 5.1

Answers:

I can never get used to having lots of black either side of the picture as it puts me off what I'm watching. I just can't seem to concentrate. Call me a freak if you will.

There's two versions of Hellraiser 3 - the theatrical version that was heavily cut and the rental version that was uncut (tagged as a special edition). I think the retail release is the theatrical version.

okay, I've found a decent picture or the red edition here (http://www.musikvertrieb.at/cgi-bin/ast/displayitem.pl?4012050406882).
According to the back it's fullscreen with English DD5.1, deleted scenes and trailers for 1-3. Using the UPC code(012050406882), DVDProfiler says it also has a featurette.
Compared to the R1 which has no special features and is also fullscreen then it looks like this is the one to go for.

I checked the BBFC and there are two version for video release which are 89 min and 92 min. The 89 minute was for laserdisc I believe.
The R2 version I have is the 92 min one and is the same as the VHS I had as well.
The sound is also good as it is not DD 5.1.

Anyone know where I can get the Red Edition from?

Answers:

I got the R1 from DVDsoon.com for about £6.00:clap:

Answers:

There's about 2 available on Ebay at the moment for £17.99 (I think!).
I am referring to the Red Version that claims to be completely uncut!

Answers:

Yes, I'm watching them at the mo.
